Might be something only Susan or another American might know, but I'm trying to remember a book I read in elementary school, probably in a Scholastic pb edition. It was not a horse book per se, though a well-loved horse was an integral part of the story. The basic plot is that a young girl who lives with her grandfather in a remote area of the American west has to ride (several days) for help when her grandfather is stricken ill. I'm pretty sure her horse's name is Hook.
IIRC a lot of the book is in the details of packing for the journey and the grueling nature of it, although probably there was some kind of acute danger at some point -- but it was more about the gritty grind and perserverance needed rather than high drama or action/adventure.
I believe the title was something like The Long Ride or The Long Journey. Searches under those titles haven't yielded anything useful as they are such common words (and common book titles, apparently).
Ring any bells, anyone? TIA

This strikes a chord somewhere but I can't for the life of me narrow it down any further than that. I'll have a nosey about the website and see if I can jog my memory!

Hey, I got to thinking of Barbara Corcoran's _A Dance to Still Music_ and then her _Sasha, My Friend_, and finally enough neurons were fired to make me realize that this book is Corcoran's _The Long Journey_, complete with Hook and everything.
Corcoran was always good with everyday routine details, like correspondence school for the protagonist in _Sasha_ and things like that. I think there is a nice bit of realistic detail about the heroine in _The Long Journey_ re: life in the remote Montana country, and also packing her horse and other preparations for the daunting task of an important long distance multi-day ride for help.
Going to put this on my abebooks wish list!
