It might be a bit odd starting with a book in the middle of the Silver B series. Would be better if we could do the first one, if someone could lend Rosie a copy. Who has got The Brumby by Mary Elwyn Patchett? It could be interesting doing that one as its the lesser known brumby series. It is dirt cheap (in the UK at least) or I can pass a copy on to someone after Ive read it. Other than that I would like to try summer on wild horse island so I wouldnt mind buying a copy and then lending it to someone?. NO NO I am not reading MEP's The Brumby! I've just witnessed that sort of behaviour in real life! Foxglove is right about it , Please can we do a nice happy pony book?

Hi Susan,
I wouldn't put you off reading it. It's an extremely honest book about the harsh realities of nature and survival, with some human cruelty (and kindness) as well. A sort of Australian Black Beauty perhaps?!
I think I've read an extract of Summer At Wild Horse Island in one of those compendium books of bits of different horsey stories, and would like to read the whole book.
As an aside, my payday treat copy of Six Ponies arrived today, and I am really looking forward to reading it and still can't believe that this somehow passed me by as a bookworm child.

Black Beauty? Arrggghhhhh!!!!! No, seriously, I have The Silver Brumby, and I'll definitely read it one day....not sure I've the strength for it at the moment BTW, foxglove and kunuma....it is The Silver Brumby by Elyne Mitchell you were refering to, right? That's the book that was under consideration, not the Mary Elwyn Patchett book The Brumby. Just checkin', 'cause I don't want to be afraid of the wrong book ;D ;D

Susan, I think they are all under consideration at the moment lol But its NOT the Elyne Mitchell one that is brutal its the Mary Patchett one. The Elyne Mitchell one is fairly innocuous, so dont be put off. But foxglove has put me off The Brumby by Mary Patchett. I did read it years ago but I must have forgotten (or blanked out) the brutal bits. Hmm we seem to be getting nowhere fast here!

I haven't read the Mary E. Patchett Brumby yet and I don't think I will be in a hurry to now! Is there any reason why we can't do The Silver Brumby by Elyne Mitchell? It is THE archetypal Australian pony story.

Whew!!! Glad to hear it's the laid-back Brumby that lurks in my tbr pile! :-)
I know what you mean about getting nowhere fast though. Do you think it's just a lack of enthusiasm for doing another "foreign" book right after doing Horse in the House? (Even though everyone seemed to like that one, to one degree or another).

I dont think its lack of enthusiasm susan, I think as soon as you move away from the classics that everyone has it gets harder to find books that we all have access to. Some of us have large libraries, others who are just getting back into reading pony books don't have a large selection. But I am always happy to lend books to people. Perhaps it might be better to choose a book by me picking a selection of say 3 titles and having a poll on it. Or maybe I should just pick something and its up to people whether they want to join in or not, rather than trying to please everyone! However we usually manage to thrash out a selection in the end I think The Silver B would be a good idea too (now that the other Brumby has been vetoed). I think its only Rosie that doesnt have a copy and surely one of us could lend her one?

Hi folks, we haven't had a reading circle for a while so maybe time for a new book. I think we have come to the stage where we need to tackle a modern pony story. Any suggestions?

How modern is modern?
Chestnut Hill modern or we can we stick to 90's onwards and Sandy lane stables or Riders which are far more readable!

We may have a mutiny on our hands if we all have to read Chestnut Hill ;D
Maybe we could try one from the 1990s then from the 2000s onwards.

I'm up for it!
The old book-buying budget being pretty thin, I'm afraid I'd need to either have the book already, or be able to find a copy in North America (US/Canada).
A few modern authors, in no particular order. The US authors were all printed or are available cheaply in the UK....not sure about Australia though...I don't know of any Australian sites to check!:
Diane Lee Wilson (historic settings) - I Rode a Horse of Milk White Jade was published in 1998
Kim Ablon Whitney (showjumping/equitation) - The Perfect Distance (2005)
Alyssa Brugman (old fashioned pony) - For Sale or Swap (2004)
Alison Hart (mystery) - Shadow Horse published in 1999, sequel Whirlwind came out this May (2010)
Jessie Haas - A Horse Like Barney (traditional girl seeking horse) came out in 1993, - Chase (historic setting) came out in 2007....not sure if this author counts, her first two books were published in the 80s, the rest of her writing in the 90s and 2000s....I think of her as "modern" though, as the bulk of her work is from the 90s on...
I'd suggest Isolde Pullum, but though she's a British author, her books are published in the US (boy, the British publishing industry seems to have a hate on for pony books!).

I'm happy to do a modern book, but as I don't have many, I may need to borrow a copy of whatever we choose. Or....shock horrror....actually buy! ;D I do have Samantha Alexander's Riders series and the Sandy Lane, but not any of the others suggested.

Somewhat off topic, as I'm looking ahead of the next two books Claire is proposing (a 1990s and a 2000s), but I'd so love an excuse to re-read The Far Distant Oxus....how about a not-quite-a-pony-book catagory :-)

Have you read the Oxus before susan? I tried to but gave up about a quarter of the way thru as I thought it very dull. For Sale or Swap might be a good one, if everyone can get hold of copies, tho may have to do it from memory as I borrowed a copy from someone a while back and gave it back to them. Another thought is one of the Pony Club Secret books by Stacey Gregg. These are easily available here (you can even get them from libraries), no doubt also easy in Australia as the author is from NZ, tho not sure about USA. They are also one of the best selling of the modern pony books so might be worth a look to see what the kids seem to like nowadays. Otherwise I have quite a few Stabenfeldt ones I could lend to people to pass around. Do you have the Brazen Horse by Isolde Pullum susan? I unfortunately dont have the Green Horse ones any more as I sold them so I couldnt lend them to anyone. Also I have a few spare copies of one of the riding school books by Sam Alexander which I could send to people for the 1990s book.

I have one of those Stacey gregg books but don't they involve 'magic' or something? Can't say i'm chomping at the bit to read one. I have the odd stabenfeld title but mostly Jenny Hughes ones and definatly not the ones you mention Claire.

Claire....yes, I have read Oxus....and both sequels! I thought them "leisurely" summer fun and enjoyed them all :-)
Re Isolde Pullum...yes, I found Brazen Horse in my summer library sale in May, so I've got it on hand (and haven't read it yet).
I've got a few of the Jenny Hughes books too, so could also do one there (warning, Haffy, I think most of the Stabenfeldt titles involve fantasy to one extent or another).
I checked the Pony Club Secrets series, and it was published in the US as well (Harper Collins), so I could get a copy pretty cheaply if necessary. Have to admit that from the looks of them I agree with Haffy though!

The Stacy Gregg ones aren't t oo terrible. They do have a bit of fantasy but not a lot and tbh it seems to have just been tacked on possibly to satisfy the publishers who know it sells nowadays Generally they are fairly traditional pony stories but nothing to get excited about. Mind you her latest series (Pony Club Rivals) sends shudders down my spine. If you read the blurb on my web-page you will know why! stacygregg.ponymadbooklovers.co.uk/But back to topic. I quite fancy The Perfect Distance but would have to buy a copy and then maybe I could pass it onto one of the others, unless someone could lend me one. I've actually ended up with 2 copies of Brazen Horse which I could lend to people. I dont think all of us have got any of the suggestions so whatever we choose it will take a little juggling. (The perils of an on-line reading circle!) Anyway the shortlist is: A Stacy Gregg book For Sale or Swap by Alyssa Bugman The Perfect Distance by Kim Alblon Whitney Brazen Horse by Isolde Pullum Anyone else who wants to take part stick your oar in now and let me know if there is anything you prefer.
