One of my favourite books as a young girl was "The Treasure of gems" by R.M. Ballantyne. I loved it and took a long time to forgive my sister for giving it away as she deemed it "a boy's book". I have never been able to find another copy. I have two boys and a girl; the girl played with cars and the boys with the dollhouse. edwar the eldest loved Barbie dolls, but I think he admired her figure rather than play dress ups. He can't wait until his daughter is old enough for Barbie dolls! All the children liked pony books. Stephen's favourites were the Alison Estes "Short Stirrup" series. Edward and Rowena liked the older English books. One of my favourite pony book characters is David from CPT's The First Rosette. My husband was a great animal lover and used to collect stray dogs and cats. He handed this propensity onto his daughter, who once wrote in a school essay, "I learnt from my father to care about people and animals who are in need. My mother lets me keep the animals but she makes me send the people on." The point of my rambling is that gender specific was only an issue with my sister when she gave away my favourite book!. A good story is always a good story .

One of my favourite books as a young girl was "The Treasure of gems" by R.M. Ballantyne. . . . I have never been able to find another copy. Are you sure that's the right title and author? I tried to look it up but couldn't find any matches.

(and, err...., confession, I certainly had crushes on both David Balfour (Kidnapped by Rudyard Stevenson) and Kim, aka Kimball O'Hara (Kim by Rudyard Kipling). I had a massive crush on Jim Hawkins from Treasure Island for several years, David Balfour became a secondary crush just because he was written by the same author. It does irritate me that all pony books are supposedly for girls. I think that trend has got worse recently. I'm not really fussed abot the gender of the main characters myself but I like it when the balance is fairly even.
