I've been ploughing my way through the boxed set of the full TV series recently.
I recall watching some episodes many moons ago (long before I fancied being a horseman!) but don't recall Beauty being little more than an equine Lassie in them!

I've got the box set Daren. If you watch too many in one go they get a bit teeth on edge with all Beautys neighing! I love the farm it's set in though, I think it was somewhere in Hertfordshire?

Yeah, I suppose you're right, Daren, but I love that series nevertheless! I love it in all its several incarnations --
I also like the New Adventures of Black Beauty from the 1990's, with first a series or two with Stacy Dorning reprising her role as Jenny, now an adult with a stepdaughter, Vicky, played by Amber McWilliams. After a few episodes in England the storyline moves to New Zealand. Then after a season or two (and unfortunately without giving any resolution to the overarching storyline about whether Jenny's husband/Vicky's father is ever found from being lost at sea! There is a voiceover by Vicky at the start of the new setup but it is very ambiguous, though I've noticed people tend to assume one ending or another. SPOILER: Basically, Vicky just says "After I was back home in England, I often remembered my time with Beauty blah blah blah. .." But it doesn't say if she went home to her nobleman grandfather, or if her father was found and her entire family went back to England, or what. I rather assume her going back to England meant the father was never found, because it was made clear in the series it was the father who wanted to return to his colonial farm in New Zealand, and wanted Vicky raised there with more "colonial" mindsets and ways rather than traditional.) Anyway, after the Vicky the Younger episodes, Beauty is in Australia with an entirely new set of kids. This storyline is a bit more action-packed but I don't like it as much.
But I loved all the incarnations of the series. The seasons in New Zealand with Jenny as an adult and Vicky the Younger are probably my favorites, though, just because that setup captured my imagination the most -- Vicky was a young postie and I can hardly imagine even now a better way to make a living than riding a mail route on horseback! And though I think they could actually have used that setup more than they did, Vicky being out riding the countryside made it plausible for her to encounter lots of people and situations that gave the potential for very naturally-developing storylines. I'm sure if you were the mail carrier you'd be pretty on top of all the goings-on at the time!

I haven't seen the 1990s show, but I voraciously watched the original. It was back in the time when kids and parents and even grandparents all used to watch 'family' shows such as Black Beauty together. I agree with Daren it wasn't really horsy, BB was just there as a sort of helpmeet to the kids solving mysteries, helping people etc. I have watched some eps recently and it hasn't dated hugely well, but its still a massive piece of nostalgia for me. And the music of course....just sums up the innocent joys of childhood! Incessant neighing is sadly not limited to 70s horsy drama but is still going strong in contemporary horsy films - along with a ridiculous amount of rearing. Really gets my goat!

Years ago I held the Black Beauty horse at a gala while people had their pictures taken with it. I would be 14; if I can get a picture on Photobucket (find it first) I will post it. The horse was very bored & not in fantastic condition, not well turned out or groomed. He was a show hunter who won at Wembley called Jolly Tramp,. He came to the Gala in an old horse box & lead the Gala procession through our small town & village wearing a rug with "Black Beauty" emblazoned on it. They didn't even have grooming stuff & I used my pony's. The bloke gave me a screwdriver to pick out his feet. How a young pony mad girl's bubble is burst.....!

That's quite sad - but all the same, you got close to a "famous" horse! Most of us never do!
The closest I get is my pal's Fell pony who looks like a shorter, chunkier Beauty!

Interesting story fizz, yeah how reality sucks the big one! I've been close to some quite famous racehorses at York races and have given a few pats and bits of carrot to Scottish National winner Ryalux up here at his yard, but none of the real biggies. Hey just had a thought for a thread - which famous horses would you have liked/would like to meet/or have met. Off to start it now!
