Ok, I started a thread on the wonderfully-drawn people in Peyton's books -- what about the ponies??!! 1. Which Peyton ponies are your favorites? Why? 2. Which Peyton ponies are described the best/have the best-drawn characters? 3. You can only choose one here -- I'm being mean! ;D -- but which Peyton pony would you most like to have? 4. Favorite Peyton pony names (just the names, not necessarily the ponies)? My answers: 1. Sweetbriar (for being so good and giving and sweet, and teaching Christina to ride!), Argus Pheasant (beautiful and quirky but good underneath -- hate that Dick sold him), Toadhill Flax (being Ruth's dream pony made him a paragon for me, too) 2. Buffoon is an incredibly well-drawn character for sure, I think!; Fly-by-Night; Sirius 3. Toadhill Flax 4. Clipper, Railway, Dogwood, Drummer, Sweetbriar

Buffoon to all the questions! Loved everything about that horse. I'd also love to own Toadhill Flax. Sweetbriar is a lovely name.

There are so many lovely characterful ponies in the books its hard to choose favourites. Buffoon would have to be up there, also Fly and Toad. I like Tilly, the old trotter mare from Small Gains and also the lovely little Storm from Pony in the Dark. All these are well drawn characters, altho perhaps Buffoon just edges it as you even see into his own mind a little bit! - oh must add that into the book discussion section.
It would be hard to choose between Buffoon and Toad for the one I'd like to own most. I love Toad as he has always reminded me of my beloved Chime, same colour same breed, only a boy instead of a mare.
Names - again I like Buffoon, also Sweetbriar and Swallow and Red Robin.
Actually you have to hand it to KMP for coming up with some of the most unattractive pony names ever - Fly, Toad and Skinny Rabbit are all good examples!

Too true on that last part, Claire! And let's not forget Worm, Tizzy's pony in the Flambards books.

Another Buffoon fan here! I also love Sweetbriar, Fly, Darkling and Milky Way from Fly-by-Night. How could you pick one? Maybe Milky Way to rescue her from Pearl! Fly-by-Night is a really lovely name but inevitably it would be shortened to Fly which is not so nice. Lol at the list of awful names. I had forgotten all about Worm from the Flambards books. Was there a beetle or spider in any of the books...that would make the set

I dont think there was a Beetle or Spider in any of the KMP books but I'm certain there is a Spider somewhere - can anyone enlighten me. Still on the subject of unnattractive names, there was a Monkey in Paradise Pony and a Bones in Who Sir Me Sir!
Oooh also forgot to mention one of my favourite KMP horses - Crab the Roan - come to think of it Crab is a pretty awful name too!

1. Which Peyton ponies are your favorites? Why? I rather like Darkling, he had character (if you can call it that) and i loved the fact he pretty much hated anyone but jenny! I also liked Sirius, yes i like the ones with quirks in real life too. 2. Which Peyton ponies are described the best/have the best-drawn characters? the above two and buffoon of course. 3. You can only choose one here -- I'm being mean! ;D -- but which Peyton pony would you most like to have? Sirius. 4. Favorite Peyton pony names (just the names, not necessarily the ponies)? The names were certainly interesting at times! Added to the animals and critters there was railwayman too which i always found a bit odd. What an eath do you shorten that to? Fly-by-night is lovely until it gets shortened!

1. I loved Tilly and Rattler, oh and Crocus, the descriptions of the races are so vivid and almost unbearably tense! I felt so sorry for Crocus having to endure Nat's unsympathetic riding. I also liked Fly-by-Night, Toad, Swallow and especially Birdie.
2. The above but I think all K Peyton's horses are beautifully characterised, even though it was hard to read Fedora's reaction to her foal was very well drawn.
3. Crocus. ( or Birdie.. sorry can I have a mare as well please!)
4. Treasure, Sweet Briar, and the ones mentioned above

I dont think there was a Beetle or Spider in any of the KMP books but I'm certain there is a Spider somewhere - can anyone enlighten me. I believe there was a little brown pony called Spider in Star Riders of the Moor/Ride To the Rescue. I loved everything about Fly-By-Night. Do you think KM had a soft spot for roans? They're not so common in pony books. I like the names of the horses in the Flambards books, but generally not so keen on her choices.
