How do you disconnect a web cam - mine came on by itself and terrified me and I can't turn it off - have had to tape over it!! I was trying to get on Messenger, - BAD idea - and it came on all by itself without so much as a by your leave!

You've most likely accidentally knocked a button on the keyboard which switches it on - it may have a dedicated button or may be a function key has been pressed. Altho I know that apparently it is possible (but not likely!) for some hackers to switch people's webcams on remotely. Anyway the best way to feel completely safe is to disable it completely or even uninstall the drivers.
To do this you need to go to device manager. On windows 7 press the start button (bottom left screen circle with 4 colours in it) and type 'device' in the search box. Then click on device manager from the list that comes up. Go down to imaging devices and double click on the webcam. The select the driver option. A new page comes up - there you can click on disable. If you never want to use it at all in the future you can also click on uninstall to uninstall the driver completely, but this can cause probs if you want to use it at a later date and you havent got the original drivers on your computer.
Forgot to say you can enable it by doing the same thing and the disable option will have turned into an 'enable' option and you just click on that.

Did you get this sorted kunuma?
For anyone else who is slightly paranoid careful I'd recommend disabling your webcam using the steps above.
