Just wondering if anyone saw this on Channel 4 last night. It made me quite angry. Basically it is the story behind one of these people who is prosecuted for keeping a load of horses and not looking after them properly. I was saddened by the sympathetic tone the film seemed to have toward the man. Yes I was sorry that he had lost his teenage daughter and seemed to lose his way in life but its no excuse for cruelty. Some of the horses were in a bad state with worms, lame and malnourished and then a foal ended up dead. He had about 50 horses and was breeding even more! There was a woman nearby who had a stables and rescued horses and was supposed to be helping but for a supposed horselover she seemed overly concerned about him rather than the horses. She kept harping on about how he lived in terrible conditions and people should be more concerned about him than the horses. But he had a choice - the horses don't! Anyway would be interested to hear anyone else's viewpoint on the programme. Its on 4od (channel 4's version of iplayer) if anyone is interested in watching it. www.channel4.com/programmes/the-horse-hoarder/4od#3464655

Yes I did see it, and like you it made me angry I didn't see quite what the programme was getting at or the point of it! The man obviously has mental problems and shouldn't be allowed to keep horses fulll stop. And as for that woman! What on earth were they doing hanging onto that colts tail like that?

The programme was sympathetic to the man. It seemed to me like they were trying to say there is a human story behind these sorts of people and we shouldn't treat them too harshly! If anything he was let off too leniently. I don't rate the RSPCA that highly and they didnt seem to do much in this case. They should have taken all the horses away at the start and then the foal would not have died. If the programme makers were concerned about the man they should have asked why social services wasn't involved and that he was allowed to live like that. Yes that Michelle and her assistant didn't seem to have a clue how to handle horses did they?!!

My thoughts were exactly like your's, Claire. Such a relief not to be the only one.
I got too angry after about five minutes and switched it off. I have a lad comes round for the evening on Mondays and Wednesdays who has learning disabilities and in that short time he spotted three serious things that were wrong...

I agree with everyone. Like tintin, I am relieved it's not just me. I could tell the watcher was supposed to be sympathetic to the man and I just couldn't feel any sympathy at all. I switched it off after the foal died and he didn't even seem bothered about it. I watched it because I thought it was about some eccentric but kind old man who was rescuing horses and was really shocked when I found out he was the one abusing them!

The point of the programme went right over my head! Someone else has said they thought it was meant to show the bizarre relationship between the woman and the old man. Whatever, it was a horrible programme.

Didn't watch this as knew I would get upset! Also feeling a bit sensitive about the whole 'too many animals' issue, as I'm terrified that one of the guinea pigs is pregnant (probably why she needed a new home ) and then I'm going to be seriously over guinea pigged!!!

Like darkhorse I actually thought it was about someone who rescued horses which is why I watched it too. Then I just had to keep watching in the hope that the poor horses were rescued. The only saving grace of the programme was that it wasnt presented by Claire bloomin Balding who nowadays seems to pop up on any TV show remotely horsy!
Kunuma - surely you'll know soon if she's preggers - they can't have a very long gestation period? Never had baby GPs before tho did have baby gerbils which were the cutest things once they'd outgrown the hairless slug stage. Anyway have you not got to the stage where you won't notice a few more yet? ;D

OMG there is now a facebook page supporting that ****** from Hoarding Horses!!! www.facebook.com/SupportForClwydDaviesAndHisHorses?ref=streamDo not read the comments of the sadly misguided eejits (I'm being polite here) who are supporting him, if you dont want your blood pressure going thru the roof! I wish I could add a comment but theres been a few people kicked off for putting negative comments on the page. Sorry but sometimes I just lose all respect for the human race (present company excepted) when I read the sort of drivel people are posting about him

I've given up on the human race too! i have heard some of the genuine background to this and the whole thing makes me sick! I'm going to put a pay pal link on here so you can all send donations to me to feed my animals for me!! Sadly the biggest scams going at the minute seem to be "animal rescues" and I sadly say that having been involved in rescue all my life, nowadays - it's a case of when is a rescue not a rescue but a very profitable scam feeding off people's emotions and their desire to be 'heroic'! The internet has taught me a LOT about people, and none of it good! A dog breed forum, pretty much entirely pet owner based, has been a complete eye opener for me! You can see the writing on the wall as far as some of these poor pups are concerned, right from the beginning. If I am ever lucky enough to be able to breed another litter - I will not let any go to 'pet' homes!!

I'm even more angry than I was when watching the programme. Bad enough the programme was biased towards someone committing animal cruelty, but with people being celebrity mad the way they are now, they have turned him into some sort of celeb animal loving badly-done-to saint! I'm really P***d off with Channel 4 and am considering writing to them to complain.

People like this do have mental illnesses but that doesn't mean animals have to suffer. I cannot stand hoarders of any kind and I don't think I could have watched this program. I hope the man has gone on a jaunt to Beachey Head or an institution of some kind.

That's so sick at lest if its junk you only hurt your self but when it's a living breathing animal well you just can't help but see red, it is a sickness thow, I'm shore these people wount to do right and you can see the distress when the place has to be cleaned, but for heavens sake don't put the animals in danger.

Exactly trixiepony. I certainly think that humans in need should be cared for as well as animals but this programme was like why are people so worried about a few nags when this poor old man is being abandoned by society. Totally biased. It could have come across so much more balanced and got the message across that both animals and humans require society's compassion. There's no reason to choose between the two.
