I am going to Warrington on Wednesday and was annoyed to find that thetrainline.com had charged me a booking fee. Does anyone know of any other train ticket booking websites that dont charge me a booking fee?

I tried that one, but I couldnt get it to select a return journey - the layout of the website is very complicated compared to thetrainline.com!

Hmm I had a try and managed to select the return journey no probs. It looks similar to the trainline site to me where you click on the little circle next to the times you want to select. I wonder if its something to do with the browser you were using. Sometimes affects websites. Actually I may try this one next time I go to York. The trainline website never seems to find any cheap fares when I go on it but this one came up with a return £8 cheaper than I normally pay!

The trainline website never seems to find any cheap fares when I go on it but this one came up with a return £8 cheaper than I normally pay! I asked this question on other forums and someone suggested that you try www.nationalrail.co.uk. I know about cheap fares, I went to national rail and looked up the exact same rail journey as I am going on. thetrainline.com charged me £9.50 (excluding booking fee), national rail were going to charge me £9.05. That is with my rail card that I have. So in reality had I gone with them I could have saved over £2.00! Also the handy thing is about national rail is if you put your journey in, it will show you what platforms you need to go to. This is particularly helpful if you dont know the train station. It also has maps of a particular rail station and also walking routes from platform to platform/main entrance to platform. I get panicky in strange places and having that has taken the stress out of the journey, particularly as I havent been to Warrington train station. I usually need someone to guide me into strange places. Apparently it is rarely wrong, though it is always best to double check with the indicator boards just in case. I went to Chester railway station (I have to change at Chester), just to familarise myself with the station which helped. Also I have an approx 30 mins wait between trains which also helps - hopefully I shall have time to have a coffee between trains as they have an Costa Coffee there.

Thanks for the link to that garej. I may try it. I dont usually book in advance but if I do its nice to know there are better alternatives than the trainline (which I mainly used to find out times and prices anyhow) Glad you found some cheaper websites for your journeys too.
