Any of you cat owners out there got any ideas how to prevent a cat howling at night? Oscar is really excelling himself lately and is keeping everyone awake. Wasn't so bad in the old house as it was much bigger, but it seems much louder here. The funny thing was when I first got Oscar it was when my gran died and he used to be her cat. When I first took him in he used to howl a lot. But then after a few months he stopped. Then, after about another 2 years, a few months ago he started again. It seemed as if he howled one night for some reason then thought ooh this is great I'd forgotten I could do this! Now he's at it most nights and it is really LOUD. I honestly think he is the loudest cat I've ever heard. Not only that but the noise is really odd like a sort of yodel at times. Trust me to end up with a yodelling cat! He has been to the vet recently for a check up so it is not a physical problem...he just seems to like it! Any advice (apart from getting earplugs ;D) would be appreciated

Have you tried actually discouraging him?
Things you could try are banging, clapping, hissing or a good squirt with a water pistol (make sure with these he doesnt see you doing it).
Although you say that that there is nothing physically wrong, has something changed in the neighbourhood lately? Jack had a phase of going in one corner and meowing at the ceiling (always the same corner). I found out later on that some new neighbours had moved into the flat upstairs, and even though they arent directly above me, they had a cat!! Jack doesnt go outside and therefore doesnt meet this cat, but after a while he stopped (the cat that lives upstairs - actually they ended up with two now - but initially they only had one - goes into my garden though).
Other than that, I have no other suggestions.

seahorse I wouldnt worry I dont think its very common. Ive had lots of cats and he is the only one who has howled, (except for when they fight or mate in which case cats do make a lot of noise - but hopefully JJ wont be participating in any of these unsavoury activities ;D )

Have you tried actually discouraging him? Does swearing at him loudly count? ;D Seriously tho I have tried to discourage him. Unfortunately I cant try the water pistol treatment as he usually is either in a different room or on the windowsill behind the curtains where I cant get at him. If he had just started while I was staying with my parents I would have said it was that but he just started for no apparent reason at my old house. I think it may have been another cat setting him off but I think he has sort of discovered he can make this noise and its quite fun to him. As I said in earlier post it wasnt so bad before as the house was bigger and the noise was 'diluted' but worse here also not just me he is disturbing.

If I got a dog with my luck it would be one of those that yaps all night! I think I have worked out why he keeps on howling. When I was at home when he started I used to shout "Will you shaddap!" at the top of my voice and he would stop. The only thing is I can't do it now cos if there was any chance oscar hadnt woke everyone else up that certainly would! ;D
