Oh, thank you so much! It's starting well, already been on a brisk walk with a couple of the Cairns. DH and I are gonna ride with the lurcher running alongside later in the afternoon -- what could be better?

Just wanted to follow up -- thank you all again for your birthday greetings. I had a lovely, lovely day. We didn't take our lurcher with us but we had a great ride over a trail that we haven't ridden on in (literally) years.
I had told my DH about 6 weeks ago that my birthday wish was to open that trail again for riding -- we still walk it and take the UTV (utility quad atv) on it, but the trail needed some overhead clearing awa fallen trees moved to make it suitable for horses, and there's a steep creek crossing that we needed to check the banks of for stability, so what with one thing and another (including herdbound horses) we hadn't ridden on that part of our farm in years.
It was ridiculous and high time we got back out there, so we spent a day of the Thanksgiving holiday clearing the path and I got to ride it on my birthday, a real wish come true.

I'm glad you had such a wonderful day rallycairn OMG you are so lucky having your own farm and land, its impossible here nowadays unless you are born to it or mega rich! Can me and kunuma come and live on a trailer in one of your fields....? ;D

A trailer would fit right in as our house is a bit of a shack! Also, don't want to give you any wrong ideas - We've only got 36 acres so don't picture some giant place where one could ride for miles. Actually I'd prefer it if we had more accessible public trails/rights of way like you have in the UK. Here, if you don't own it, forget riding on it for the most part.
But despite the fact that we've a scruffy, homey place, yes I'm lucky and I know it for certain!

Oh, I wish I lived in the parts of Virginia that are considered horse country, Kunuma, which is probably where any horsey story would be set (haven't read Phantom Horse). Gently rolling hills, villages like Middleburg -- historic and beautiful. My land is much flatter and not nearly as picturesque. I'll try to post pics sometime but I haven't had any luck with this forum trying to post an avatar pic via flickr, so I don't know if I would have any luck.

Middleburg - that rings a bell from the Cammie books. Phantom horse is set in the Blue Ridge Mountains - cue going off to find the book to see if it gives place names............................................ nope it doesn't appear too, though in one place it says that they could see the Potomac river?

Ok, well, Virginia is shaped kind of like a triangle, with a long east-west "base" and the apex somewhat off center to the east The Blue Ridge mountains run from the southwest part of the state up toward the northeast. I would have guessed Phantom Horse probably takes place more west and south than "horse country," which is more toward the apex of the triangle, EXCEPT for the mention of the Potomac River. If they can see the Potomac, the book likely takes place in "horse country," most of which is more rolling hills than the really mountainous counties to the west or in West Virginia (another state).
Yes, Cammie's territory is unquestionably "horse country" -- with towns including Middleburg, Warrenton, Upperville, etc. Jane McIlvaine's books are all very much a paen to Virginia Horse/Hunt Country.
I will definitely add Phantom Horse to my list; maybe I can pick up some clues to pinpoint the location. And I will study a map to double check on the course of the Potomac River in case I am off base there.
