I'm reading "Hannah, the complete story" about her life on a remote farm in the Yorkshire Dales. Incredible lady! She had no electricity or water on her farm and really struggled in the depths of winter with not much money either. I don't know how I missed the TV documentary about it all back in the early 70s. I'll have to get the DVD of it now!

I haven't read the book but I have seen the documentaries which are fascinating and amazing. She seemed a lovely lady too. It was so sad when she had to give up her farm and go and live in a house in a nearby village (Cotherstone, I think which is actually a very pretty place). I defy anyone to watch that bit without a tear in their eye.
I've walked around the place where her farm was and it is pretty remote - and beautiful. Is on the side of a couple of reservoirs and there's a nature reserve there too. Good place for birdwatching. Its actually in Teesdale which is part of Country Durham rather than Yorkshire, its the next dale up from Swaledale where I live so it is very close to Yorkshire.
Rosie let me know if you'd like to borrow the DVDs.

I'll have to check and see what they are called. Its a double box set with the first film they made about her and then the last one where she had to move out of the farm. Actually altho they are not horsy (there are some cows in them ) I think they might make a good choice for the film club, if anyone else is interested in watching them too.

I've watched the first two now. Are we going to discuss this in the film club board? I'd like to know what you, and others if they are interested, think. Only asking because if we wait to long I'll have forgotten it all

I did know about it the first time round(crumbs was it really in the 70's) but can't remember much about it - except that everyone seemed to forget she lived that way because she wanted to! For some of us living like that is vastly preferable to having to cope with people around us! Will have to watch them again to discuss properly! Though expect me to be biased, right now I would sell my soul ten times over for an acre of land!
