ITV1 Thursday 16th August 9.00pm Jennifer Saunders relieves her childhood passion for horse riding as she trains for Badminton horse trails in a two part series. Looking forward to this

Oh, Claire, please tell me you know about Peter Pan and Jigsaw and the amazingly spot on and funny yet warm French and Saunders sketch about pony mad girls? I guess I always figured that since that sketch is so well done, and Jennifer and Dawn are holding a reasonable riding position even while pretending to be completely inept -- I figured at least one of them had to know something about horses. Gotta know pony mad girls a bit to make fun of us so well! Ha ha I figured this Badminton thing was another good natured send up "Just the eight hours then!" (How long it took the "girls" to catch their ponies.)

rallycairn I love that clip too. I think Kunuma or someone has already posted this on here somewhere but worth another posting I reckon ;D Claire I'm not sure if she actually competes in Badminton, it didn't say in the TV mag

I'd forgotten all about the pony mad girls sketch! The old memory is definitely going. Now I come to think of it, it was very apt, even the pony's names were out of pony books.

She's aiming to compete in a grass roots event at badminton. I read an article about it recently, i'll try and find it again.

Thanks for that haffy - its cast some light upon the thing. Crikey a 40 years gap is a long time to be out of the saddle! I will defo be watching if I can get it on-line but can we not have one horsy programme without Clare bloomin Balding sticking her oar in....?

There was even a horsey-related episode of QI with her in it...!

I enjoyed the show last night. I really laughed at her description of her daydreams as a ponymad teenager being discovered by the Olympic Selection Committee. It was interesting to see her reaction to the Pony Club and amateur events from an adult point of view, noting the organisation and effort that goes in from volunteers. The horse Jack that she rode was lush.
I guess she ends up riding elsewhere in the second part, with Badminton (and others) being rained off this year?
And what self respecting mother would buy their child pink, tart-branded johdpurs?!

I enjoyed it too I think she is very brave! I know exactly how she feels when she said "I don't want to fall off" and "bones being made of powder at her age"

Wonderful programme - not much I can add to what people have said already
Just about the first horse on (Biscuit I think the name was?) was just like Honey and I went "Ahhh" - oh dear I am very, very soppy
The Katie Price stall at Olympia was frightening. I wonder how much extra it costs to get everything in pink?
I think it was Zsa Zsa Gabor who said, "My Dear, you would not believe how much it costs to look this cheap"

W I think it was Zsa Zsa Gabor who said, "My Dear, you would not believe how much it costs to look this cheap" I think it was Dolly Parton- a great woman! Whatever happened to Katie Price's "dressage ambitions"?!

Whatever happened to Katie Price's "dressage ambitions"?! She had to give it up. Every time she tried to do a piaffe she ended up giving herself two black eyes! ;D Hope this is on ITVplayer!

I missed the beginning so was a bit confused as to whether she had a horse to ride or was buying one to compete on - she seemed to be in Ireland looking at horses for sale at one point? Plus she was driving around in a landrover so was expecting her to tow her new horse home!
I loved her trying not to be too 'honest' about the whole Jordan/chav/pink sparkly horses thing! It is so true, it represents everything that is bad about the horse owning world at the moment - everything done to show off and horses just accessories to the rider's ego.
Interesting when she was talking about the pony club too, and how it was so parent orientated, they did all the looking after, transport etc!!
Wasn't like that in my day - you hacked miles or saved up to hire a cattle lorry - and you looked after your own pony! My parents never went anywhere near my ponies, and as for going to a pony club event...........no chance! Jennifer had it right - I really warmed to her when she said that it used to be about being just you and the horse out together! EXACTLY - that is why I love riding, just you and the horse - no other people needed!
Intrigued to see how she gets on in the next ep!

Great story! There's hope for us crocks yet. Still its not so much your age but your physical condition that can hamper you. Some people of 80 are actually pretty fit and healthy - look at those who run in marathons, something I couldn't have done at 18! (I did manage The Great North Run tho!) Still haven't watched the programme. Must catch up!

Here's episode two. I thought it was a shame they didn't show all of her dressage test or say what her score was. She was great in the show jumping, and Jack is brilliant. I want him! www.itv.com/itvplayer/video/?Filter=323342

Rather more talking and socialising in this one than actual horses, that Black Pearl is a marvel though, reckon he is remote control! He has been doing it for yonks! www.britisheventing.com/asp-net/events/Results.aspx?HorseId=63008I had thought she was actually going to do a novice one day event!! Wasn't quite so impressed with what she actually did finish up doing, but for all that she did give it a go. Was that what they call the Eventer's Challenge class - think the jumps in that are between 2 and 3 feet?? Apparently she lives on Dartmoor, I didn't know that, but then I don't keep up with the lifestyles of the rich and famous! ;D
