That's steeper than the Hickstead bank!

Where did you get that from Tintin? It does look photoshopped, its basically a horse climbing down a wall! (Spiderman horse?!) Surely the only way a horse could get down that would be to jump from near the top like wild mountain goats do. The horses legs possibly look right-ish but the woman doesn't seem to be at the right angle at all and surely she looks too calm! ;D

It's the bank at the Italian Cavalry School at Pinerolo All the officers had to gone down it at the end of the course to pass out (NCO's and Other Ranks were presumably much too sensible) The side saddle picture is from an article about French responses to the Italian theories expounded at Pinerolo. The lady was French and went to Pinerolo to prove that anything an Italian gentleman could do a French lady could do better Attachments:

This is a similar shot of Captain Caprilli, famous advocate of "The Forward Seat" I can't find the article itself at the moment, but will have another look My mind is now unfortunately full of Spiderman Horse "Spider Horse, Spider Horse, Much better than Spider Man, (Of Course!) Look out for Spider Horse" Attachments:

This is starting to ring bells. I'm sure I posted a clip of cavalry officers going down that bank. Just can't remember why or what thread now

Wow that is amazing, but seeing the full hill makes it more understandable as that top bit is by far the steepest - if it was all that sheer it surely would be impossible! I still can't get over that woman's face - she looks positively bored. I've been down the sides of some pretty steep mountains in the Scottish highlands on horses before and I don't think I had quite that expression on my face! ;D More like a cross between and and maybe even a

Well done. There were side saddle classes at the show I went to last week but sadly no entries for the concours d'elegance ones.
To go back to the original topic, I suppose the great era of pony stories were written at a time when women were only just admitted to Olympic Competition - I think Major Holbrooke says that Henry and Echo could aim for the Olympic trials at the end of Radney Riding Club and at the time of writing I think you did have to be male and in the army to ride the three day event! However I am glad that it is being preserved / revived. I don't know if I would fancy it myself. I understand that if you do fall it tends to be nasty. You may not slide out of the front door but If the horse falls you are more likely to go with it than fall clear. I just live in hope that I can get thin and bendy enough to ride again at all. Driving might be ore realistic. I can't think of much side saddle other than Patience in the Georgie books who has been raised to be very old fashioned and Valantine in CPT's Goodbye to Hounds mentioning an ambition to show hunters sidesaddle.

I reread Eventer's Dream today and the Fane sisters ride sidesaddle at the opening meet because they don't have the proper kit for riding astride - but have their mother's sidesaddle habits.
