Did anyone see the Heavy Horse programme last night? (Its on ITVplayer if you missed it) Loved seeing the different breeds of draught horse, altho a shame that they missed out shires. Pity its not a weekly thing, more interesting than most of the crud thats on ITV nowadays and lots more breeds they could look at. Mind you I was turning an extremely bright shade of green with envy. He has his own farm, horses and gets paid to travel around the world visiting different breeds of horses!!! Going back to a discussion rosie and I were having on another thread, I would love to see more working horses about. Its so sad that they were replaced by noisy smelly tractors and other machinery and some breeds almost became extinct. I like the fact that some people are still using them to work and it was good that Martin stressed this. Maybe with global warming and pollution and the soaring costs of diesel more working horses might reappear one day.

I saw it. I enjoyed the bit where they were training the drum horse I stand to be corrected but weren't there Shires in it briefly I've totally forgotten what they were doing if they were, I might be thinking of another programme It is a pity more heavy breeds aren't used on farms, agree bring back heavy horse power!

I liked the bit with the budweiser horses but i didn't watch much as from the tiiny bit i saw i didn't like the way he sent his 2 year olds (correct me if i'm wrong but positive he said they were two) to be started and the rough manner in which this appeared to take place going by the snippets shown of lunging etc. Must admit after the first bit i did change channels and only saw snippets during adverts so maybe it wasn't as bad as it looked... ?

I stand to be corrected but weren't there Shires in it briefly I've totally forgotten what they were doing if they were, I might be thinking of another programme He did mention shires - I think they were in the bit where the household cavalry horses were out together so you got a very brief glimpse of them - but the film didnt focus on them like they did with the other breeds. Its a shame they missed one of the British HH breeds. Haffy yes he did say 2 years old which I also thought was too young and it did look a little rough and ready when he was lungeing one of the youngsters with the harness. But I don't know anything about that sort of training and maybe 2 is a normal age. (There was a later bit with the man who used horse for logging and I'm sure Clunes said they were the same age as his horses and they were fully working so perhaps they start younger than for riding) I didnt take to the trainer at all (and was also surprised to say the least that he harnessed a young male to a stallion!) but you could tell that Martin Clunes really loves his boys and I don't think he would let them be mistreated. There was nothing else remotely dodgy in the other bits (unless it was the trumpet playing lol) And what about that Clydesdale stally - wow!

I'm not going potty then ;D Yep could have done with a bit more on Shires. I can see why Daren loves Clydesdales, they are gorgeous

There were TWO Clydie stallions on the Collessie yard - Ben Franklin being one, the other being Collessie Cut Above (you saw him briefly at the end of the segment). Pretty good programme, I thought. Wish they'd thought to show the heavies under saddle, but I understand it was focusing more on WORKING horses, and not what most people use their heavies for these days. And how could you NOT love Clydesdales!

I can't remember where this photo was taken, but it was last year (possibly Olympia) - Brian Blessed presenting a special award to him and his owners.

LOL I think Brian Blessed wins by a whisker ;D
It was a good programme, but they could have had less of Martin Clune's horses and feartured more different breeds. Did anyone catch the name of the French breed which were being used in the vineyards in Italy. They were lovely.

I have been doing some research and apparently its quite normal to break a horse to harness at 2! However most people wait until they are 3 or more before they ask them to pull heavy loads and do proper work. Daren, as our resident heavy horse aficionado, do you know anything about breaking them to harness/work (as opposed to riding)?

Claire - not an awful lot about breaking them to harness, although I do have a great film on DVD which does show one being broken in. It also shows the farmer riding the horse back from the field - so they WERE used as riding horses back in the day!
