Hi all, just thought I'd mention there was a very short piece on the Isle of Rhum Ponies, which are related to the Highland Pony, on an episode of Landward, which is a sort of Scottish equivalent to Countryfile. Link to episode on BBCiplayer below (its only available until tomorrow evening so you'll need to be quick) Unfortunately the ponies are used in deer stalking and there is a bit where one of the ponies carries a dead deer so be cautious if this will upset you. They really are gorgeous ponies. (There's also some more horses on it as they featuring an equine transport firm) www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b0178cth/Landward_2011_2012_Episode_21/There is also an interesting piece on dairy farming. I have always hated the traditional method of dairy farming which entails taking the newborn calves away from their mothers and rearing them separately so the farmer can get all the mother's milk. A farmer in Scotland is actually pioneering letting the calves stay with their mothers. He says that even tho he gets a lower milk yield the savings he makes due to not having to feed and look after the calves himself and the fact the calves grow quicker and more healthy, outweighs anything he may lose on the milk yield. I remember saying this to a farmer years ago and people laughed at, so I now feel somewhat vindicated. Sadly I doubt this method will take off which is a shame as i think more natural farming is always better. (Sorry for going off topic!)

Smaller and dare I say prettier? Love the zebra stripes too. It was interesting to hear they introduced Clydesdale blood into the Highland breed to make it larger.

Thanks for the link. I enjoyed seeing the ponies, but the dead deer was a bit yukky. I wonder that the ponies don't mind. It was also nice to see the deer....this time alive!....again from the Autumn Watch programme a few years back.
