Hi all, Have been scaring myself to death with these pics which are part of an Autumnwatch project to find the biggest house spider. I'm terrified of the things and nearly fainted when I saw this monstrosity. It was found in someone's bedroom. If it had been in mine I'd have moved out! More spider pics here: www.flickr.com/groups/bbcautumnwatch/discuss/72157628000016716/Is anyone else scared of them? Think I'll put a poll up for a bit of fun.

I don't mind them generally. I actually prefer them to most other minibeasts eg I would never pick up a worm/slug but don't mind holding spiders. Ours is an older house (30's) so we get lots of spiders....like your pic long legged ones. There use to be one that everynight for weeks and weeks ran across the floor from behind the Tv to behind the sofa and back again a little later usually with Jade trying to eat him (he was too quick!)....we called him sid. It was almost like having another pet ;D I think you'd like this book Claire

Lol at Sid - not my kind of pet tho!
I really like snakes, in fact nothing bothers me but insects, tho I don't mind worms and I like bees and butterflies. I suppose I'm not as bad as some people who can't even look at pictures of spiders as I can just about bring myself to catch them and put them outside. Unfortunately I get a lot of spiders as my house is the same age as haffy's and this autumn I have been getting even more than normal, sometimes been putting 3 or 4 out a night! Thankfully none as big as that long-legged beastie in the pic.

Was watching Autumnwatch on iplayer last night and they apparently found one even bigger than that - about 15cm (6 inches) across! Don't know if there's a pic tho.
Yes, mysteryarab I have to deal with myself too, altho my ex and my brother weren't too keen on them either so they weren't much help when I lived with them! Mind you when I worked at the college I used to ring the technicians to come and catch the spiders for me ;D

A paddock mate was out riding and came across a huge black snake last week that reared up and flattened it's neck out. I hate this time of year as they've woken up and they're hungry and horny and cranky. Spiders- I don't mind after I've got over the initial shock if they're big but I can't stand them in the bedroom or the toilet!

Do you get really big spiders over there cally? I know a few people who live in South Africa and they get huge ones. One of my friend's cat's catches tarantulas and brings them to her! Just to give myself even more nightmares I thought I'd blow that spider pic up to about life size. It's scary!

Funny video haffy. ;D It has reminded me I used to be scared of jellyfish when I was a kiddiwink. We used to go to hols in scotland and there were loads around - I never see them nowadays.
I do really like lizards and geckos tho. Love seeing them on hols abroad. Wish we had them over here.

I love daddy long legs spiders, we used to play with them when I was a kid . Funny as I was terrified of other spiders, we used to get huge huntsmans coming in the house. I thought they had it in for me lol. These days I don't mind them, unless they get on me. Was packing away the winter quilt and getting the summer one out of the wardrobe the other week, ended up with a big black spider in my hair, must've been living in the quilt. Total freak out ! But when I got him out of my hair I put him outside. The only spiders I kill are red-backs, cause they be dangerous .

I first started growing vegetables about 15 years ago. One day I was working in the greenhouse pinching out the tomatoes & after that I went off to work (about a 40 min journey on the bus). When I got there all the old guys doing the painting class were setting up & I felt a ticklish sensation on my body. I looked down my T shirt & there was this fat greeny spider nestling in my cleavage. I just whipped my T shirt over my head, I don't wear a bra! Think it made the old guys' year! I was so repulsed by the spider I didn't stop & think I was stripping in front of 9 elderly men & a couple of ladies! I just screamed SPIDER! No one had a heart attack.

Lol fizz that is hilarious! I'd do the same thing if I had a spider down my top. I don't think I'd get one of those enormous ones in my cleavage tho! ;D I remember having hysterics once when a spider went down my riding boot, those long ones that are really hard to get off. I think i had about 5 people trying to pull off the boots with me screeching at the top of my lungs....happy days ;D
