Had a request to do this top 10. It can include both childrens and adults, tho I think most of them will be adult. What are your favs? I don't really read much non-fiction as I find it hard to concentrate on them, but some I have enjoyed in the past are Riding With Simon by Mona Sandler (in fact I probably enjoyed it more than her fictional books!), Summer With Tommy by Caroline Silver and The Man Who Listens to Horses by Monty Roberts. Oh and I also enjoyed Monica Dickens non-fic horse book which I think was called Talking of Horses. Thats all I can think of at the mo.

Horse sense and sensibility by Crascredo
Thy Servant The Horse by Lionel Edwards

Where can I begin, there are so many? All the old Horseman's Year books, The Arab Horse in Europe, Erika Schiele Timeform Annuals All the Winners Series feom 1946-1959 Hyperion by Clive Graham The 2 Great Racehorses of the World Series Pat Smythe's Autobiographies (bit boring though) My main interest is Horse Racing & breeding as you can see & I read more none fiction than horsey fiction.

I've got Classic Lives in the house but haven't read it yet - might get it out shortly.
Only nominate books you enjoyed folks as there are so many out there I couldn't fit them all on a poll.

I assume this is ' narrative style' rather than standard instructional texts?
My favourites include
anything at all by mark rashid
Shy Boy and The Horses in My Life by monty Roberts despite not being sure about the man himself personally.
Charisma by ? (Mark todd's double olympic Gold horse)
Ginny and her Horses by Ginny Leng (now elliot) and Grooming For Ginny by Elaine pickford
Half A Fault by Audrey Taylor
Horses Of A Lifetime (A horse and Hound publication)
Six of the Best Taits Top horses
A Will To Win by Rachel Hunt
Probably loads more too...generally anything about eventers and their horses is good by me

Yes, I think we had better stick to the non-instructional ones haffy or it will get out of hand. I only really like ones about wild horses, racing or training youngsters. I get bored with horsy celebs yarking on about their lives (or maybe its just jealousy lol)

Claire the two I really enjoyed from the four I listed are
Porlock Vale Riding School 1946-1961 (The home of British Equestrianism) and Thy Servant The Horse by Lionel Edwards.
I also like Talking of Horses by Monica Dickens but you've already nabbed that one ;D

I've thought of another one I really enjoyed which might interest lovers of heavy horses. The Last Horsemen by Charles Bowden. Its about Britains only horse-powered farm in Northumberland.

Sorry to jump in but yes they did Claire...I remember buying the book and video for grandad as he loved the program as it remimded him of his days farming with horses when he was a lad.

Thanks haffy, I watched some of the TV programme, as the farm is in my old neck of the woods. Thought it must be the same one as the book.

I bought the DVD after reading the book as I somehow missed the TV series when it was on.

The only ones I can name are by celebrities, except for this one which is a collection of short stories by various people. I cant remember the title! [edit] Found it! Like I said, it is a collection of short stories from people who have worked with horses throughout their lives. There's a Romany Gypsy, Badminton's (probably now ex) head horseman who is the main horseman in charge of the 3 day event, a woman who runs a riding school but used to compete (and win!) Point to Points against men etc. It's a good book! www.amazon.co.uk/Tales-Old-Horsemen-Jennifer-Davies/dp/0715304690/ref=sr_1_2?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1320587651&sr=1-2

Garej that looks like a book I've got called Tales of the Old Countrymen. I wonder if they are in the same series?

Garej that looks like a book I've got called Tales of the Old Countrymen. I wonder if they are in the same series? They are the same series. There are several "Tales of" books about, though as far as I am aware of, that is the only horsey one in the series.
