An avatar is the small picture beneath your name which shows up on all your posts. It acts as a personal pictorial signature.
For example mine is the photo of Domino you can see to the left.
You can either choose an avatar from the pre-set list or add your own. Here's how to do it.
From List:
I have added a few horsy images to the ones already set up by Proboards. If you don't want to bother with setting up your own avatar you can choose one of these.
Select 'profile' from the menu and then click on 'modify profile'
Find the avatar drop down menu and scroll down until you find an image you like. Choose the image and then save your new profile.
Add Your Own Avatar:
For this option you will need to have an image which is aready published on the internet. It could be from a website or a pic you have uploaded to an image hosting service such as Photobucket. If the image is from a website other than your own however please make sure it is not copyright, or ask the website owner's permission. (This is to comply with the rules laid down by Proboards) Images can be photos, cartoons or even animations. However due to health and safety regulations no flashing images can be used.
Again select 'profile' and click on 'modify profile'
Enter the URL/address (begins with http) of your image into the appropriate box.
If from a website this address will show up if you move the mouse over the image, right click and select 'properties.'
If using Photbucket copy the text from the 'direct link' box onto your profile page.
Make sure the size is no more than 100 by 100 pixels or it will slow the forum down and mis-shape the threads.
If using Photobucket you can use their pre-set avatar size. Before you copy the image details onto your profile page select the 'edit' option above the image in Photobucket. Then select 're-size' and from the drop-down menu select 'avatar' this will ensure your image fits perfectly. Once you have changed the size you can copy the URL as described above.
You can also re-size when using Image Shack. In this case there is a drop down menu from the screen where you upload your picture from which you can select 'avatar' option.
If you are adding your own pic from a website or whatever, make sure it is the right size by checking the appropriate boxes on your profile page and changing them to a smaller size if necessary. You may have to tweak the size of your image to get it just right.
When you have finished don't forget to save changes to your profile.
If you need any help with any of this please just send a PM to your friendly administrator!
