Your right Clarie this can not be left uncovered. will start of simply r I will rabbit on for hours. I have to say thought the films were fantastic but for me nothing can quite add up to the books especially the second book The Two Towers. I somtimes found the films a little frustrating as they missed out what I thought was quite important chuncks, I did tut occassionly in film and yes got dirty looks. I owe the books so much, I am dsylectic and struggled a lot when I was younger but loved books more than anything, I managed the Hobbit at the age of 11 and tried LOTR but could not cope but always wanted to, I managed to teach myself to read by site reading which is what most Dysletics do If I see a new word I have learnt to ask. I tried again a few years later I loved the LOTR so much I had to finish reading them.
Just wondered what every ones opinion is book or film or if anyone hated it.

seahorse got to this at last. Been busy tonight on my dads scanner scanning a certain book (looks shifty) then spent the rest of the night ogling men. Its a hard life...
LOTR was my dads fav book so he got me into reading it when I was a child. I absolutely loved it I must have read it 10 times and each time it seems just as good. I used to have a crush on Aragorn. (see other thread!) I really wanted him to marry Eowen. She was one of my fav characters and I thought she was a lot more interesting than that soppy elf he married!
I thought the film version was very good over all. Obviously not as good as the book but then films never are. Yes, there were a few bits which irritated me. I thought the ents were a bit daft looking and Christopher Lee was too hammy. Probably more bits too but havent seen the films for a while. What bits irritated you?
But all in all it was a good effort. I thought the casting was really excellent and most of the characters were pretty much how I imagined them. My favourite part of the book is the first volume and I also liked the first film the best. Love the bit in the mines of moria. I also liked the interaction between Aragorn and Eowen in the later films. I thought her character faded from the scene a bit tho. Gollum was excellent. I liked the way he had 2 personalities.
Did you ever see the animated version of the film which came out quite a few years ago? It was not bad. It only did the half the book they were going to make the second half but it must have bombed as they never did.
Also have you heard the BBC radio version made a long time ago. It was the best. Really followed the book and had some great actors. Interesting that the actor who played Bilbo in the film played Frodo in the radio version. Also Robert Stephens who played Aragorn had a brill voice just how you imagined him to sound.
I also loved The Hobbit I heard the director of the LOTR (forgot his name) was going to make a film version of that but it has never appeared. Wish it would as I would love to see it.

I agree with you over Eowen why marry a soppy Elf who will only blame you for giving up the chance of nearly eternal life anyway. At least Eowen ended up with Faramir this is one to bits in the film that annoyed me has it did not explain why she was happy at soppys and Aragon wedding because she had fallen in love with Faramir, had stupid friends questioning me on this in cinema at least the extended version showed hanging garden with worm tonuge and explanied this. Christopher Lee was very hammy especilaly when he died in extended dvd return of the king. Did not see animated version but heard it was good.
Gollam was wonderful just as I had imagined him.
Wish I heard the radio version.
What has happened to the Hobbit maybe Peter Jackson had problems know he fell out over money over one flim recently.

I agree with you over Eowen why marry a soppy Elf who will only blame you for giving up the chance of nearly eternal life anyway. Yeah can just imagine it: "Aragorn your late again and don't put that dirty great sword on the table. I must have been mad marrying you, I could have had eternal life you know!" Finally tore myself away from the hot man thread! I agree with the you that the cinema version left too much unsaid re. Eowyn meeting Faramir. The extended version was a bit better at explaining things. But TBH even in the book that bit didnt really ring true. I dont think she would have fallen out of love that quickly and into love with someone else. She must have been really besotted with A as she went into battle not caring if she lived or died when she found out he didnt want her. Oh Shadowfax is an absolutely gorgeous horse in the films isnt he? I think I might watch them again now after talking about them. BTW I am sure the animated version is on dvd and I think you can still get the audio version too. It was really long might have been about 30 hours! I'll have a hunt around for you may be able to DL them from somewhere.

Hi seahorse, you've probably gone by now, but if youre still around hello! Missed you earlier as my computer was playing up!
Wanted to watch the films again last night but when I went to get them realised I had lent them to my dad! I was really annoyed.
Got some good news. Managed to find a copy of the animated film and the BBC radio version to DL. I had a quick look at the film the animation looks a bit crappy compared to todays standards but if I remember rightly it was a pretty good effort in terms of the story. John Hurt was the voice for Aragorn. I might watch it all. God it was made in 1978 makes me feel ancient as I watched it at the cinema!
The BBC radio series was not actually as long as I remembered it only 13 hours! Maybe they chopped some off or maybe I just mis-remembered it being longer. In that version MIchael Horden played Gandalf, John le Mesurier (from dads army) played bilbo and Ian Holm played Frodo. As you recall he was Bilbo in the latest version. Probably is the best version and stuck to the book the best.
I'm going to send you a PM about them so check your messages!

Have watched the animated version again for the first time in years, TBH doesnt seem that great after the last version but I suppose thats only to be expected as they didn't have much in the way of special effects in those days. Actually the latest film version does seem to follow it quite closely. I wonder if I am right in thinking that Peter Jackson liked it? DId I hear that somewhere or am I just imagining it? The audio version is just as brilliant as I remembered, not that I've listened to it all but from the little bit I did it is excellent. Anyway seahorse you can give me your views when you've sampled them! Anyone else seen/heard these versions?

Hi claire & seahorse sorry its taken me ages to get to post this. I like Lord of the Rings too. But I have only read the book once as I'm a very slow reader! I thought the film was good I agree with all your comments. I did think it was a bit violent but I suppose you can't get away without it in film with all those battles. I love Ian Mckellen who played Gandalf, he is geat in everything. Also liked Aragorn - for differnt reasons! Claire I have the animated version on video. I haven't seen it for years will have to have a look at it agaoin. Talking about The Hobbit, I have just heard that it is definitely going to be made soon. Peter Jackson is producer but I don't know if he is going to be director. It will be made in 2 films and is due to come out in 2010. Yes a long wait! Pity he didnt do it earlier instead of that dreadful King Kong. PS seahorse, it's gret to be small means we can ride lovely ponies like Arfa

You are lucky, my feet would be on the ground if I tried to ride an 11.3hh would look something like the Thelwell cartoon... Is Betty the one you went to get the other day. Is she a Welsh Mountain? Sorry seemed to have got off the LOTR subject a bit!
