Not sure if there will be enough suggestions to do a poll but we will have a go as someone suggested it for the top 10s.

Darkie has appeared in quite a lot of books, but probably not modern ones due to political incorrectedness. Also dare I say it N*gger!

This is going to bug me now. I'm actually struggling for examples where names have occurred more than twice:
Merrylegs- Black Beauty/Third Year at Malory Towers Stardust- Son of Black Beauty/Pony Club Cup Robin - Jackie & the Pony Boys/Pony Club Trek Tarquin- Kestrels/Black Hunting Whip Easter- The Magic Pony/Phantom Horse Rocket- My Friend Flicka/Six Ponies
Please can people cite the books for their names? I can ony think of two Mistys, and don't recall any Brackens or Seagulls....
As an aside, I think the CPTs generally give their pony characters good names. Most of Ruby Ferguson's are awful IMO. Pat Leitch is quite good; her Highland ponies often have nice Scottish names.
This is a topic on my mind at the moment as I went with a bunch of mates for a weekend break in a Peak District cottage the other weekend, and met some friendly horses up the road (will post pics later). I was really taken with one dapple grey Araby gelding, which kickstarted useless teenage fantasies about him becoming mine.....only I realised I didn't have a favourite name for a grey gelding! All my good grey names seem to suit mares better; Stardust, Frosty, Seaspray, Dawn, Moonlight etc. My friends found it highly amusing that this totally preoccupied my mind for the rest of the holiday.
I might start a fantasy horse name thread as it's interesting to see what names other people like (I'm only ever interested in the names of my friends' babies- not the ugly screaming things themselves)....

2 more Merrylegs: the pony in The Runaway Pony by Pamela Rogers and the rocking horse - if you can count that - in Merrylegs by Paul Brown.
More Robins: one in the Follyfoot series, one called Red Robin in The Scruffy Pony by KMP
There is also an Easter in H. M. Peel's Easter the Showjumper
Some Stormys include Marguerite Henry's, one in a book by Stephen Holt and one in the book of the same name in the Breyer Stablemates serie. Sure there are more
Another name we haven't had yet but is popular is Lucky: Lucky Star by Patsey Gray, Lucky in the Anne Eliot Crompton books, Rainbow Pony & Wildflower Pony. A foal called Lucky Chance in the Pippa Funnell series and another Lucky in the Breyer Stablemates series. There's a Lucky in the Pony Camp Diaries series. There's also a book called Lucky Lady by Susan Saunders. havent read it so couldn't say to be sure there was a horse called Lucky in it but its a good bet!
Will check more names later on but I agree that most of the pony book authors have been fairly original with their pony names as there are less common ones than you'd think.

Lucky Star in Janet must ride Too and Stardust was the original name of Stanley trimbles pony in Jill's riding Club.
It's a hard one, Misty was the one that sprung to mind for me initially with Misty of Chintogeague (sp), Jackie's Misty and Blackbirds Misty initially

I think every riding stables I've ever been to has a Misty- usually small and grey- so that's the first name that springs to mind. The worst named pony I ever met was called Charity, but sadly had a distinctly uncharitable nature.
As you say, there is a wider variety of names than you might think. And of course they go in and out of fashion (still sniggering at Darkie & N*gger in A Little Bushmaid).

Checked some more names, found 2 contenders for the top spot:
Midnight - in the book of same name by Rutherford Montgomery, in Midnight on Lundy by Victoria Eveleigh, Phantom Stallion by the Annixters, Midnight a Cow Pony by Col Meek, Day of the Unicorn by Mollie Hunter, Midnight Rodeo Champion by Robert Gard, The Chestry Oak by Kate Seredy.
Also variations on Midnight include Midnight Dancer series by Elizabeth Lindsey , Midnight (Lady) by Jenny Oldfield (Half Moon Ranch) and Midnight (Magic) by Joyce Stranger.
Star - Lucky Star is Patsey Gray's books is mainly known as Star (altho I did sneak it in the Lucky name section too!), Star in Phantom Rider series by Janni Lee Simner, in Serilda's Star by Olive Rambo Cook, in Star in the Willows by Katherine Wigmnore Eyre, in Dark Horse of Woodfield. Star in the New Forest books by Stephen Mogridge, in Sybil Ludingtons Ride by Erick Berry, in A Horse for Peter by Eleanor Brown. There's also a Star as well as a Midnight in Joyce Stranger's Midnight Magic!
Loads of variations on Star: (Flaming) Star in the book by Nicky Millard, (Evening) Star in the TB series, (Bellfarm) Star in Col Meek's book, (Silver) Star by Joseph Chipperfield, (Shining) Star in My Magical pony books, (Bells) Star in Horse Diaries series, Star (Dust) in Summer at Horseshoe Ranch by Eleanor Hoffman, (Midnight) Star in High Stepper by Helen Watson, (Golden) Star in the Diablo series by Gabi Adam, (Sea) Star by Marguerite Henry. Also a donkey named Star in Star's Turn by Linda Newbery.

Claire, was Nutty/Deidre's pony in Who Sir? Me Sir? also called Midnight?
Does anyone else think certain names should only go with certain colours? I always thought Stardust was an odd name for a chestnut pony in the Woodbury series; surely best suited to a grey.
I am a bit anal about these things; had a big notebook full of potential names when I was young, for different colours/sexes/breeds.

Yes I agree with you foxglove. I get so narked when illustrators get the colour wrong too!
This is slightly off topic but when I was a kid the most popular pony names in my area were Jasper, Jacko, Rocky and Sparky but I don't think I've come across any of them in pony books, has anyone else?

I'll have to check the Who Sir Me Sir book. Its quite a hard top 10 to compile! I'm pretty sure there is at least one Jasper and Sparky in the books but can't think which ones! Common names for ponies when I was a kid included Blaze, Pickles and Smoky. There are a few Blazes in books, the one in the Billy and Blaze series, the one in the Stacy Gregg Pony Club Secrets, one in A Horse for Claudia and Dennis. Also (Silver) Blaze in the famous Sherlock Holmes series and another Silver Blaze by Lilias Edwards. Oh yes and Blaze (Face) in Thomas Hinkle's book. Can't think of many Smokys, apart from the Will James one. Also only one Pickles in the Phyllis Briggs picture books about Pickles the Pony. EDIT - Just thought of a Rocky, there's one in Rodeo Rocky, one of the Half Moon Ranch books. Thought I'd also remembered a Jasper but when I checked it turned out to be a Caspar! Any excuse not to get on with my work!

There is Rocky. I can think of Rodeo Rocky (Jenny Oldfield) and the dapple grey rocking horse look alike in A Pony of your Own (Mary Gervaise). I was thinking of the most UNUSUAL pony names, the ones that occur only once and I thought of Sula (Punchbowl series) and Rosinante (Don Quixote's horse) and also Rosina Copper

There's a Jasper in the Jinny books- mount of the dastardly Clare Burnley.
Willow was a common pony name when I was young, but I can only think of the Kestrels series.
I also recall having a long list of possible show names, as I couldn't understand why people had such rubbish ones. Being ponymad-but-ponyless meant I had to find ways to amuse myself!

I have a big 3 ring binder full of names. I started it in the 7th grade and still use it for my model horses. As full over used names...... I suddenly can't think of anything that hasn't been mentioned already.

1. STAR 2. MIDNIGHT 3. LUCKY 4. MISTY 5. DARKIE 6. EASTER 7. BLAZE 8. ROBIN 9. STORMY
