Gay darius, Dido and Rouge, UnTamed, Night Storm etc by Hazel Peel
Nutmeg At Westways by Constanze White
Search for Scorpio by Anne Sheldon (if in fact it actually exists although i think Amazon have an ibsn number on it)
Caroline Akrill's showing books go through stages of being available then going off Rador, a bit like the later JPT Moors books and same with last Jackie book too (Steeplechase adventure)
Water Wagtail by Jane somebody Hubert. Only ever seen it on ebay and expensive to boot with big bidding wars.
Lol I think you should have one for overpriced and what a let down too! Can think of a few candidates for that personally from above alone...

Lol I think you should have one for overpriced and what a let down too! Can think of a few candidates for that personally from above alone... Feel free to start a thread haffy, sounds like it will be interesting! Will add Five Foals and Philippa by Judith Berrisford and The Deep Sea Horse by Primrose Cumming. Also Wild Ponies by Joyce Stranger which I managed to get hold of not long ago. Yes, it is funny how books go in cycles of rarity, I've certainly noticed that over the years. At the mo Jackies Steeplechase Adventure can be got reasonably cheaply but I have a feeling it will soon be back up to a high price when the last few cheap copies have been bought.

A Rosette for Rpyal by Patricia Leitch. It could also qualify for the over-priced and let down thread if someone starts one

Sea Ponies by M M Oliver/E Ducat has to be one, especially with DJ. I think I must be the only on this forum to own it.

That is a tough one garej, well done on getting hold of it. Another hard one to find is the Merrow Ponies by Judith Campbell.

Theres a few of copies of sea ponies on Amazon right now.
Claire I think the other one of hers is equally rare but can't remember what it's called. Also the Patience McElwee (sp) books Merrythoughts and Dark horse and there is another pony one too i think.

Four Ponies is the other Judith Campbell one, its a little easier to find than the Merrow one I think. The Sea ponies one must be going thru one of the easier cycles as last time I looked there were no copies. Off to Amazon to have a peep now!

lol so when it's back to no copies we will know who is hoarding them all Just thought of another Mona sandler - they go through cycles too! Do you think what possibly happens is one copy appears at an astronomical price then someone see's it and thinks hey i've got that think i'll cash in and before you know it lots of copies surface and of course the demand goes down alongside the price?

I think you've hit the nail on the head haffy, then when people snap them all up, the book in question goes back to being rare and expensive. I also think that the huge increase of people selling stuff on ebay and amazon which started 4 or 5 years ago brought prices down but now that so many people have cleared their attics or whatever, the prices of some stuff is going back up again.

All the Sheila Chapmans are rare, Ride for Freedom probably the rarest.
Must add The Intruders by Veronica Westlake, usually around the £100 mark!
Hmm wondering should we have 2 separate top 10s for rarest and most expensive or just merge them into one, as sometimes a book can have a few copies but can be mega expensive possibly due to the illustrator or some other reason, whereas another book can be extremely hard to find but usually cheap. What do you folk think?

Silver Snaffles, although it used to be expensive has never been that rare over here and now since the Fidra paperback edition came out its pretty easy to get hold of. If you are interested Shadowhawke I can easily get hold of a cheapish copy for you.

I'll PM you shadowhawke
OK folks have narrowed this down by listing all the books which have either no copies or only one copy available at the moment. Then we can vote on which ones everyone personally feels are the hardest to get their mitts on. If you havent even heard of the books its cos they are mega rare so I would vote for those titles first!
Shortlist with authors:
THE GRAND ROGUE - FRANCES PRIDDY PRETTY AS A PRINCESS - FRANCES PRIDDY WATER WAGTAIL - JANE DE BARGUE HUBERT GAY DARIUS - H M PEEL DIDO AND ROGUE - H M PEEL NIGHTSTORM THE FLAT RACER - H M PEEL PILOT THE CHASER - H M PEEL UNTAMED - H M PEEL CRAB THE ROAN - K M PEYTON AS KATHLEEN HERALD THE MERROW PONIES - JUDITH CAMPBELL NUTMEG AT WESTWAYS - CONSTANCE WHITE TREASURE ON THE MOOR - JPT WILD PONIES - JOYCE STRANGER RIDE FOR FREEDOM - SHEILA CHAPMAN THE DEEP SEA HORSE - PRIMROSE CUMMING IF I COULD RIDE - CAROLINE AKRILL CAROLINE CANTERS HOME - CAROLINE AKRILL PEPPER LEADS THE STRING - JO PACKER GYMKHANA TREK - JO PACKER PAMELA AND THE BLUE MARE - ALICE O'CONNELL NEW FOREST VAGABONDS - STEPHEN MOGRIDGE NEW FOREST DETECTIVES - STEPHEN MOGRIDGE NEW FOREST TREASURE - STEPHEN MOGRIDGE
Poll on its way...

I've heard of most of them, but have only managed to get my hands on a few....they are the super rare!
Just a note....a while back (last fall, if I remember correctly), I emailed Image Cascade Publishing (they do the Janet Lambert reprints, among others) with the suggestion that they add Frances Priddy to their catalog. While they're not pony/horse book publishers, they do vintage girls books, so I thought it would be a good fit. They actually returned my email, saying that yes, Priddy did look like an author they might be interested in. As yet, that hasn't resulted in anything, but at least it's out there.

That was very enterprising of you susan. We'll know who to thank if they do publish them!
There's only one of them I havent heard of - one of the Frances Priddy ones (Pretty as Princess). I've had my paws on around half of them over the years.
BTW susan if you have any info about the Frances Priddy one so I can add it to my website I would be really grateful.

Finding this a hard one to vote on...I don't know anything about American Authors unless they made it over here in some form (like Doris Gates etc) and I am fortunate enough to own several of the others admittedly having paid more than i would admit to my OH for a couple and getting lucky with others (I use to love Amazon pre orders! Had several bargains through it but it appears no longer available). I also don't tend to go for books like the Stephen mogridge ones so again wouldn't know a rare one if it hit me in the chops...therefore my votes are a little biased and based on the books listed I have been searching for in vain and I ahven't used up all my alloted votes.

I'm afraid I gave Gymkhana Trek & my Hazel Peels to a charity shop before I found this board. Thats a bummer fizz! Mind you the Jo Packer books seem to have shot up lately, they didnt used to be so expensive, especially Gymkhana Trek.

Sorry Claire, can't help on Pretty as a Princess, I haven't been able to lay hands on it, even via the library to read! It's so rare, it doesn't even turn up in my bibliography of horse stories!
