Hi all, talking of donkeys on the breeds thread, it seems unfair that they can't be included in the other polls so here is a poll just for them! What are your fav donkey stories? Hopefully there will be enough to make up a top 10.

The Boy and The Donkey (aka The Donkey Race) by DPT is my favourite DPT book, which conveniently also happens to have a donkey in it!
The Pennyfields (also DPT) also has a donkey in it, but I would not classify it as a top ten book as I hate it!
Georgia in A Pony Of Your Own (Mary Gervaise) is given a donkey in the story.
Peter Clover also wrote the Donkey Diaries series but I dont know how good or bad they are because I havent read them. Similarly Sheltie Finds a Friend has a picture of a donkey on the front, again, I have yet to read it.
I am sure that there are more, though.

Don't think I've ever read any bar the Donkey sanctuary childrens illustraed books (eyore etc) by Elisabeth Svendsen (sp)
can only think of Brighty of the Grand Canyon by Marguerite Henry and that Gillian Baxter one whose name eludes me.

I love The Donkey Race also garej. CPT also wrote a donkey story set in Sicily called Bandits in the Hills but its not as good as Diana's donkey story. Special Delivery is the Gillian Baxter one which I also like, and Brighty. Another pretty good one, altho for younger readers, is Double Holiday by Michael Hardcastle. And That Ass Neddy by Ethel Nokes is good for a chuckle. Just thought of another good one: The Donkey Smugglers by Gerarld Durrell.

Oh I forgot Bandits In the Hills, and the Gillian Baxter one as I do own them!
I dont own Elisabeth D Svendsen's Donkey Sanctuary books, but I do own another one of hers: The Story of Pepe, the Donkey Who Went to the Market (which must rank as the longest pony book title!). The reason why I remember I got it was because of the rather long title!

Thought of another one: Jane's Lonely Donkey by Jill Stevens (aka Stephen Mogridge) which is also a pony story.

There are some pretty good ones rosie for you to try. I suggest you start with The Donkey Race by DPT as this one is really like a pony story with a donkey instead.

The Donkey Race was previously published as The Boy & The Donkey so they are the same. I agree - do try The Boy & Donkey! Do make sure that it is either the Collins edition (who published the first edition) or the Armada paperback reprint. Criterion did publish an edition in the USA, which I strongly do not recommend. Apart from the fact is has crappy illustrations (Shirley Hughes illustrated both the Collins and the Armada editions), Criterion edited the book! No two sentences are the same (the only difference between the Collins edition of The Boy & The Donkey and the Armada The Donkey Race is the title!) and it spoils the whole story, as the emotions and depth of the story are lost! Thankfully the Criterion edition is harder to find in the first place, but I would like to warn people as it gives a false impression of DPT, and the story in general, so they buy the right edition!

The Little Grey Donkey by Helen Cresswell. Also Eeyore's birthday party from the Whinnie the Pooh books, that's a classic!

Lavinia R. Davis did two donkey books, The Secret of Donkey Island and Donkey Detectives
Not sure if adding them is a help though, in regards to a poll, as I haven't read them myself!
