Hi all, some nominations for a poll for the horse and pony breeds most commonly featured in pony books. The top 3 are perhaps Exmoor, Dartmoor and Arabs. Any other suggestions please.

TB's as they often crop up when the character moves onto horses and of course in anything racey/point to point themed.

Shetlands in Gillian Baxter books, she obviously had a soft spot for them; Orky in the Bracken series for instance. Connemaras in a number of books.

There are quite lot of New Forests. Rufus obviously, but also ponies in a number of the PT sisters books.

Yes weren't the famous 'six ponies' New Forests?
There are a fair few Mustangs in the US horse books and of course the Brumbies in the Aussie ones.
Just out of interest I wonder what the least featured breed is?

There's loads of Welshies, very few Quarter horses 'cos they weren't over here then, and not that many pure bred Arabs. Quite a few pbs though - like Adonis.

Theres LOADS of Arabs kunuma, its one of the biggest lists on the 'breeds' page of the website! Altho to be fair they are mainly in American pony books, less in British ones. I think out of the M & M breeds the Dales must be the most under-represented. I cant think of a single book off hand which features them. Even the flipping Lundy pony has a book to itself but not the por old Dales

Hackney horses and ponies? There were quite a few in the older pony books I think.

definitely a lot of Thoroughbreds (hunter/jumper as well as racing) in American books, also quarter horses. You see a number of color breeds in American books too, particularly in ranch/western settings (palominos, appaloosa, pinto/paint: aka skewbald and piebald)

There are a few Morgans but not loads, ditto Shires. Mules appear in more books than you would think and there are loads of donkey stories but I dont think we can count that as a pony breed!

Even the flipping Lundy pony has a book to itself but not the por old Dales I cant think of anything that involves Dales either. Fells arent exactly common either, but they appear more than the Dales!!

Added poll. Also thought of another breed that crops up in quite a few books - Lippizaner

Too late now, but I thought of one more....the Standardbred, which appears in many American books about trotters.
