OK we have had some horrid ones, now for the best ones. This is going to be much harder I think! I will have to have a good look before I can pick my best ones.
As with the worst covers thread if you dont have the pic yourself or can't link to it let me know and I'll see if I've got one I can put on the thread for you. Also the worst covers thread is still open so if you have any more stinkers please add them there.

Good choices rosie, I'll see if I can put up some pics of them. Yes the Jill covers are very nice, hmm will have to decide which of them I like best, possibly The Perfect Pony one as I love the expression on the horse's face on that one!

My favs would have to be: Misty, Stormy and Sea Star Justin Morgan, Bright, and Black Gold. The old ones, not the crappy ones they got now. Flip, Whitecap's Song...ok, any thing drawn by Wesley Dennis and I love it. Sorry I don't hvae pictures.....Photobucket and dial up do not get along.

A lot of these favourites are older books, which is interesting. I will have a think, but off the top of my head I like:
Horse of Fire- the only Jinny to have a drawing rather than a photo. I always thought it looked really magical.
Of the photo covers from the 80s Jinny editions I liked The Summer Riders best- the one with the horse filling the frame and gleaming in early morning sunlight.
I also loved my copy of Green Grass of Wyoming, which had a photo head shot of a stunning white horse with mane foaming.
Some of the Silver Brumby ones are good, with a real sense of the distinctive Australian background.
I bought the 3-in-1 edition of Michael Hardcastle's racing stories, and think that is a well thought out design: photo of a steeplechaser jumping, and with the graphics to look like those of the Racing Post.

The first four Silver Brumby covers, esp the 'red' ones, the Silver Brumby's daughter hardback photo, and the 'ones with green writing'.

Not sure which covers you mean kunuma. Tell me if any are on my website and I'll put them up here for you. My favourite Silver B cover is this one, as I love the style of Victor Ambrus: Also love the wrap around cover of Brumby Racer (I think this pic was origiinally haffys): This is one of my favourtie pb Silver Bs. As you can see a very well used copy as have read numerous times. I really felt like this WAS Thowra as a kid, and the background just fitted in perfectly.

I like Victor Ambrus too but I don't think is style is everyones cup of tea (and yes i recognise those floor tiles!) saying that my fave Elyne mitchell covers are the adult non brumby books Black Cockatoo's... and Flow River... (will take pics in a bit)

Claire/Haffy I'm a fan of Victor Ambrus drawings. His Flambards covers are nice and I love his Time Team drawings (which has nothing to do with pony books of course..sorry :

You're right haffy, not everyone likes Ambrus's style but I do. I agree Rosie loved his illustrations for Flambards. He also did most of Helen Griffiths books too which are the best things about those depressing things! I also love the Jackie covers by Geoffrey Whittam who is prob my fav illustrator, but I dont know if I could choose one. I love his cover for The Wild One by Monica Edwards but can't really include that as it hasn't got a horse in it! Talking of Monica Edwards, this classic Anne Bullen cover must go in: PS Hope you dont mind susan and haffy, have re-sized a couple of your bigger pics to fit on the page better

Dorian William's novel Pancho has to be in this list. Has anyone an image? Sadly I lent someone my copy & it was never returned. The internal illustrations are poor though.

Looking at all the covers together has made me think of an aspect of cover art that I don't often think of...the role of the designer of the cover art, separate from the work of the artist him/herself. For instance, for most of these books, the title/author/illustrator information is just typed up and slapped on. But for a few, that infomation has been made part of the design element of the cover art as a whole. King of the Wind, Bright Spurs, Gymkhana Trek and No Pony Like Pepper all have this element. Compare them to Vicki and the Brown Mare or The Horsemasters.....while the artwork of the latter two is sublime, the design of the cover is totally ordinary. And, in extreme cases, poor cover art design can actively detract from the artwork....look at Island Pony Club by Naomi Wainwright....the artwork by Anne Bullen is very nice, but you're so hypotised by the horrible red circles that you don't even see it! naomiwainwright.ponymadbooklovers.co.uk/

I'll back you up, kunuma...I love that Black Stallion cover too. My first copy of it was an adaption in paperback of that cover, with a silver background.
Re Ponies for Hire....the one by Margaret MacPherson? The original UK edition with the Sheila Rose cover art? Pretty cover art and I loved the book.....was lucky enough to find a copy in the US....especially since the US edition cover art is awful!
