It's one skill to draw horses, quite another to draw people. I think a lot of pony books suffer from terribly wooden looking riders. There were a lot of particularly duff ones in the 80s as I recall; Darkling and one edition of Green Grass of Wyoming with the awful drippy Carey.
I've got the latest edition of Blind Beauty, which to my mind is a badly composed photo due to the way the horse's head is turned. I'm surprised that was chosen; I take pictures of horses at the races all the time and delete about 50% for this reason.

Clare the Blind Beauty one I'm thinking of has a turquoise blue cover done in oil pastel of an anatomically incorrect horse running like a rocking horse. The colour is correct though & it;s a great story. The one you put up Clare is pretty bad, it's how I imagine a diabetic seeing just before they go in a coma.

I've got another version which isn't as bad as the two already here but it's not good either. it's got a sulky-looking girl sitting on a horse with no saddle or bridle and cuddling its neck. She looks like she's ill or drunk!

I like the first Smoky one on the post. It's full of energy, but I agree the horse looks a little strange. That Phantom Horse cover is so bad, it looks as if it was done by a young child or a beginner in a not very well taught art class!

Another one for us clown phobes! All the Yearling reprint editions of the Island Stallion books are awful but this one is the worst:

When I saw the nomination for Scarlet Royal I thought "wait a minute, that's a pretty cover"...I'd forgotten (thankfully) the awful reprint. Not just a bad pic, but the COLOR! I wonder if that wasn't the very first of the Evil Pink Pony Books?
Re the Island Stallion....ewwww! I'd never seen those editions...that horse looks posessed!!! Quick, we need an exorcist!!!

I wonder if that wasn't the very first of the Evil Pink Pony ! Hehe have to laugh. May have to change the background colour of my website. TBH I did it that colour as a sort of ironic finger poke at the pink pony book but I'm beginning to think that was a bit subtle and people may think I actually approve of such pink books! ;D Any votes for the colour I should change it to...? ;D

Agree, everytime I think I have seen the worst one ever, another one comes along! Who knew there were so many hopeless artists being paid for rubbish, while good ones get ignored! Name and shame, who painted the devil horse?? Seriously someone should point out that only people ever look that evil, never animals!

Island Stallion is one of the worst so far! It looks as though he has a 6pack, a case of an artist who has never looked at a horse!
