Hi folks, doing the top 10 of best and worst covers now. We'll do the worst ones first and get them over with! Please nominate stinkers here ;D If you dont have a pic or a link let me know and I'll see if I have one. I know we had a thread about this a while back but we never actually did a poll. Susan nominated this one from the quiz thread. Silas by Cecil Bodker (I think this is the German edition) Funnily enough another awful one was used on the quiz too. Not sure which edition it was as I mercifully got rid of this one and kept a much nicer copy. And two real monstrosities: (Blackie edition) (Will check what edition this is)

I nominate this awful Cobblers Dream cover. The background is nice it's just a shame about the peculiar shaped horses on it Attachments:

I hate those Jill covers by Lascome is it? All the horses on those are just dreadful.
And what about that wanderer one with the strange-shaped foal?

I think all that is wrong with the We Rescued a Pony is the hideous clown; a thing of nightmare. I don't think all the orange covers are as bad as people think. his one is well composed has good colour & paint handling. Among the worst have to be the Phantom Horse series done by an untaught amateur, possibly a child.

The 80's Kit hunter editions (the laminated boards ones) were pretty bad...this one in particular where wild one is rearing and kit looks very fetching in her trainers/jeans and leg warmers similiar get up to this one I hate ones where an 'incidental blip/mistake' spoils an otherwise okay (or fab in Pony of golds case cover) lovely cover, shame about the ham fisted rider or this long legged welsh looking sh1tland the pb of Fear treks the moor is another - the terribly 'fitted' (whisch is not really a term that works here) hackamore makes me so annoyed and angry...that poor pony! Think the same pony maybe on the pb of star riders too? the JA allen 'stirrup' covers too...the pics on the whole were not bad but why was the stirrup needed sure there are loads more too and totally agree on the ones chosen so far especailly cobblers Dream (sorry ) I think thats possibly an Aussie version of Thunderhead Claire? It's the one I have and thats where mine originated from anyhows

Yes those 'stirrup' covers were awful, ditto the Wild One pictorial hardback books. I've got all those. They also fulfill the 'illustrator has not read the book' criteria as they show a girl of about 11 or 12 whereas she was actually grown up! And as for the legwarmers! ;D I somehow survived the 80s without wearing them on horseback (tho must be admitted I did actually wear them at times! )
Re. the Golden Pony, I think we should have a separate thread for 'crappy riders/terrible riding postitions on covers' or something similar as I have noticed loads where the riding positions are absolutely shocking. Bad research on the part of the artists, if they know nowt about horses they should at least go to a stables and watch a few being ridden!

lol Kunuma I had to google that ;D I've got to admit that cover does give me the creeps. Going off topic a bit...I can't stand those things in glass cases you see on seaside piers with laughing clowns and policemen in them. I have to look away and pass them quickly

Yes I agree Rosie, I hate all these things too & clowns in general. I suppose the illustrator was trying to sum up the horror of the circus & does it very well. I can't bear people in animal suits etc promoting things on the streets or those "living sculptures" that are all white or black that you get in cities. There is a man in Manchester's Market street. His mouth & eyes are all pink & damp looking & the make up is cracked. I have to hurry along out of the way.

I am not very keen on clowns either and my girls think they are scary too!
The paperback edition of Pony Club Team where Christopher is on Fireworks is awful. I think that particular picture was used on the Reading Circle discussion. Also the paperback version of Mystery Pony is terrible. I don't have any pictures however.

I know which pics you mean darkhorse. Will try and find them. The White Lion and Blackie editions provided quite a few candidates, altho that clown one must surely be the worst of the Blackie ones. Yes, I am a fellow Clown phobic (and I dont like those figures in the glass cases either Rosie so you are not alone) - Stephen King certainly knew what he was doing when he made the evil monster in 'It' manifest itself as a clown! Back to topic - have found loads will have to bulk upload them all in the next day or 2.

I agree on the Christopher on Fireworks cover Darkhorse. Reading comments & reactions to the clown cover makes me wonder if anyone actually does like clowns? Please post if you do!

Pic of the Pony Club Team cover: Also pic of The Mystery Pony pb ed: Yep they are pretty awful! A few more shockers: Burke pb edition Why anyone thought a pic of a decapitated horse's head would make a nice cover..... And of course we can't miss out this dreadful thing:

This awful edition of I Rode A Winner by CPT. It's an American edition and published by Scholastic in the 1970s.

I can't bear people in animal suits etc promoting things on the streets Speaking as someone who has done charity collecting in one of those suits, they attract people's attention! In January we did collecting outside Tesco's (and it was the first time we used the costume at the location) and it collected 4 times the usual amount of money we normally make. The costume definitely made a difference! They do make you very hot though - and the vision is very limited!

Hilarious thread, what a parade of shame!
I bought the 70s hardback of Dream of Fair Horses with its lurid, garish cover. Truly a product of its era.
How about a favourite covers thread?

lol Rosie, its not a very nice cover at all is it? Did you also see the Boys Book of Horse stories cover - has to be one for the 'worst riders on covers' category. He sems to be defying gravity. Must have a pot of glue under his bum, plus its a good job looks like the poor horse is wearing a hackamore as his teeth would have been pulled out by the rider hanging on by the reins.
