Hi all, displaying my anorack-ish tendancies here but thought it might be fun if I had a few pony book related 'top 10s' on the website (you know the sort you see in magazines) and it might be interesting to think up some lists and work out what could be in them.
I have already thought of obvious ones like top 10 male and female and horsy characters (we can use the face off competitions to work those lists out) but also what about top 10 valuable or rare books, top 10 illustrators, top 10 longest pony book series.... you get the picture.
Post here if you have any suggestions for top 10s and when we have a few ideas we can start compiling the lists.
Well it keeps me out of mischief.... ;D

Claire...what a fun idea! I'd add a top 10 "ought to be better known" list (giggle, I know, it'll be hard to get consensus on this one, cause...well, the writers/books aren't well known). Vian Smith from the UK and Claire Birch from the US spring to mind...authors (or a single book) that were quality, and not particularly rare, but for some reason never caught on.
Haffy....Love the idea of sub-genres! I'd add rescue to that list.

How about fantasy/mythical books? I know there are some rubbish ones about, but on the other hand, there are some good ones (Silver Snaffles springs to mind).
Or "told from pony point-of-view" books? Examples include Black Beauty, but there are so many more than that (Black Beauty's Family books by the PTs, most books from the 1920s and 1930s etc).
Ones where the majority of the action is based at a Riding School (Silver Eagle series for example)?

Just thought of a couple more: top 10 villains and top 10 cliched pony book plots (like gypsy's stealing ponies and people being given ponies for rescuing dogs, horses, children, etc!!!)

What about the most popular areas where they are set like Dartmoor and Exnmoor? Or what about the top ten weepies? Black Beauty would win that one hands down.

Just to let everyone know have set up a sub-board for the top 10s as they were taking over the pony books board somewhat! It will also make it easier to check you have voted on them all. Oh yes and added 2 more top 10s: wild horses/ponies and ranching stories.

How about a top ten for each of the Pullein-Thompson sisters (if it's not too much trouble Claire or could I set one up)?

How about a top ten for each of the Pullein-Thompson sisters (if it's not too much trouble Claire or could I set one up)? Sounds like a good idea...infact it would interesting to do for any of the authors with enough scope (Pat leitch, JMB, KM Peyton etc and them favourite Jill book, Jinny book etc - I guess could do that with any series actually although some may be top 5's etc)
