Fantasy may have overtaken modern pony books to some extent but as garej said earlier there are some really great pony fantasy books. A couple I nominate are The Black Loch by Patricia Leitch and Mig o'the Moor by Nancy Caffrey. Garej suggested Silver Snaffles which I am sure will be high up on everyone's list. Post your further suggestions here.
BTW have posted a complete list of all the top 10s we are attempting to do on the original top 10 post.

I'm not sure if the Messenger Series by Monica Dickens counts as the horse only appears briefly?

BlacK Loch would be my number one definatly. Love it.
I also like the messenger series but not sure I would class them as pony books myself? I also like pat leitch treasure To the east but bar a short hunting scene it's again not in the slighest horsy.
I would also nominate Red horse haunting by Anne ? (JA allen series and Carolyn Hendersons Gray Ghost and primrose Cummings Deep Sea horse

Yes I suppose we could class some of the Jinny ones as fantasy couldn't we. Mylor is more sci fi than fantasy but there aren't enough horsy sci-fis to have a top 10 of them! I think the Messenger books could maybe scrape through as pony as the horse is an important character.
I like the Horse Angel and the Freedom books by Angela Dorsey if we want to have a modern one included.

Apparently The Little White Horse has had a resurgence in popularity recently because JK Rowling named it as her favourite book when she was young. I've never classed it as a pony book though.
Night of the Red Horse, Chestnut Gold and Horse of Fire are probably the Jinny books with the most mystical element.
I remember a book called Silver Blue which my school library had; it was about a particular strain of slate-blue ponies (on Dartmoor I think) and their sort of fantastical relationship with a hazel tree. Hard to explain really, it was probably written in the 60s or 70s when the author was smoking something dodgy! I remember it because it was so unusual.
I'm sure Lord of the Rings should get an honorory mention for Shadowfax!

Hmm I suppose there's a lot of content in it that isn't very pony-ish, but I always remember the bits where she's learning to ride. In fact I even wrote a story using it as inspiration when I was in first year. We were meant to be writing ghost stories but I think mine was more of a description of all the horses ;D never mind!

You could perhaps include The Horse And His Boy, as Bree the horse is quite a large character in the story. I always found the Narnia books a bit po-faced though.

Another book along the lines of not quite pony book is The Wickedest Witch in the World, a great fantasy story which has witches and an evil horse and a good pony.
Also K M Peyton wrote a few fantasy ones, Stealaway, Paradise Pony and The Wild Boy and Queen Moon, tho I dont think they are as good as her more realistic novels.
