Hi all, what are your favourite eventing stories? I would nominate Caroline Akrill's Eventers trilogy and The Perfect Horse by Gillian Baxter to get the ball rolling.

Olympic Horseman by John Richard Young is a great eventing story....and unfortunately awfully rare and expensive Also rare/pricey is Smoke Rings by Dorothy Lyons....an excellent book, but not sure where to put it....they start out training for eventing, but eventually switch over to show jumping, as they're headed for the Olympics, and the ruling came down against women riding in Eventing in that Games (Tokyo, I think), though they were allowed in Dressage and Show Jumping One great book that's a bit easier to find: Janet Must Ride by Diana Pullein-Thompson

Susan you must have a very extensive collection of rare books! Almost forgot - One Day Event!!! Oh yes and International Velvet is a good book too, better than the film.

Think you've pretty much got them covered there as was going to say eventers Trilogy, Janet must ride and Internationbal Velvet. Sure theres another I like with a XC/eventing theme but can't think f it off hand but something is niggling away at me

LOL...fair, I'd say....I've certainly heard of better!
Some luck involved, and lots of hunting. Smoke Rings ran in the $200 range (pre-Recession), but I found my copy, hardcover, w/dj, not ex-library, for $5 at a local shop.
I'd never even heard of John Richard Young (probably not surprising, given his rarity) when I came across Olympic Horseman in a bookstore that mainly sold adult mysteries.....again hardcover, in dj, not ex-library, for $7.50.

A couple more eventing stories: Gay Darius by H M Peel and The One Day Ponies by Zita White.
Also is there a one day event in Bargain Horses or is it hunter trials - can anyone remember?

I think we need to rack our brains for a couple more eventing stories before I can add a poll. Get your thinking caps on everyone!

Is A New Horse for Marny about eventing? I haven't read it but I'm sure someone was talking about it or I read about it somehwere. I can't think of anything else

Thanks susan. I checked my copy of Bargain Horses too (dont have the Marny one) you'd think we had nothing better to do lol. ;D Anyhow I think we have enough suggestions for a poll so I'll put one up now. And I'll try not to muck it up this time!
