Thanks claire.. I really loved this as it was told from a lads way of thinking ..Quite a change from girls with horses..It covered the way they think compared to girls..And was just a lovely different book.. I was very upset and shocked by Dogwoods departure but thought it brilliantly written..Jonathon's feelings on the racecourse when he came to .And the way he tried to hide his attachment to Dogwood.. And his confused feelings of young love and lust was also well written.. Sorry i am not very good at reviews but really enjoyed this as you can tell.. Sure I will think of more later..

I havent read this for a couple of years at least so can't remember it all that well. I did enjoy but it was a disappointment in a way because I was expecting Ruth to be in it. Possibly if I read it again without those expectations I would like it more. But I agree very good portrayal of the emotions of young adulthood. She is excellent at that subject.
BTW someone who persuaded me to set up the poll hasnt even voted tut tut!!!

I would lend you a copy but havent got one at the moment! However strangely enough there is a large print version of it out. I saw it at my local library (along with Dear Fred) so maybe worth looking in your library in the large print section. Actually its always worth looking there for books cos you can get the newer ones quicker there as no-one thinks of looking in that section for them!

Oh well done you dont worry I am not annoyed would only have been buying to re-sell and have a top price I wont go over. Just being nosey to know who had got it ;D Yes you definitely dont need to read the other ones first as this doesnt really follow on that much. If anything it follows on from A Midsummer Nights Death (non pony) and is mainly about Jonathan.

I really enjoyed this book. I cried buckets when Dogwood met his fate (big softie, I know). I haven't read many books set in the racing world, but this was really well done. I also loved the squating element, it was a different idea to the usual books and shows how this country has changed for the worse- squat now and you'll be public ordered in a flash(grrr). Also, I thought the love element was well told and kept you guessing. In all I would give this book a big thumbs up, in fact quite fancy reading it again, already.

Managed to get round to reading this again. I liked it better than the first time I read it cos I was disappointed that Ruth wasnt in it then, but I still didnt like it as much as the Team or Fly by night. I guess it is the character of Jonathan. Altho he seems to be one of KMPs fav characters he is not mine. That poor little rich boy thing doesnt quite do it for me. I find Ruth and Peter more interesting characters, altho Peter is not given much to do in this book. Also I found the character of Pip a bit one dimensional. The Jonathan-Iris thing is more interesting. But all in all it is a very good read. As usual KM keeps you page turning and she is so good at dialogue. She is such a good observer of human nature and life in general too. One of my fav bits is when Jonathan persuades Peter to take the stable job and allow him to train Dogwood so that he can be near Pip, only to find out Pip is in fact at the same stables and will be with Peter all day! Just the sort of thing that would happen in real life! Its a good ending, if sad. KM is good at endings that are different or unexpected. As the characters said, what could have happened to Dogwood afterwards? Also great last paragraph when we find Iris's true feelings. On a slightly different - but related - track I have just got my hands on The Beethoven Medal at last. If you like the character of Ruth, its worth finding as this continues on from the Team. She is now nearly seventeen and has fallen madly in love with Patrick Pennington (from Penningtons Seventeenth Summer/Last Term). I don't think there is much horsy content in it will let you know when I have finished it. Looking forward to it!
