It's so long ago that I read it last I couldn't say for sure darkhorse. I just read the first ed but had a PB growing up. I don't think it had major abridgements although there were odd bits I didn't remember (more descriptions/detials than story) but it may have been I just forget them or found them insignificant as a child.

Technically it should really say if it has been revised or abridged but they usually dont bother so its very hard to tell unless you read both books together and have a photographic memory, or you have read one copy so many times you know it off by heart! I wonder if we should have a thread for revised/abridged editions. Going back to The Team this is the first time I have really thought about it deeply when reading it and although I thought it as brilliant as ever, I found myself much less sympathetic to Ruth than in previous readings. I thought she was quite selfish throughout the book. Her ambition was to have a pony which could compete at PC events at a high level and she seemed to be quite ruthless in this. Firstly when she got Toad she knew how much he meant to Peter, but despite him being a close friend and having helped her make Fly into a decent pony, she trampled over his feelings in her single-mindedness. Secondly and possibly worse, was what happened when she sold Fly. When she found out he was in a bad home she was upset because she didnt have enough money to buy him back but if she had sold Fly to the McNairs she would easily have had enough to buy him back and still get another pony. This really puzzled me as this is what I would have done and I imagine most people who loved animals would have done it too. After all she had a responsibility towards Fly. Still trying to work out if KMP was trying to show Ruth in a more unsympathetic light as she became more like the competitive 'horsy' characters which the author had seemed to disaparage in Fly-by-night. (And this also follows a lot of the themes in her other books) Or was she actually saying that people should be less sentimental as per Ruths brother lecturing her about it and Ruth herself consciously trying to be less emotional and more grown up. What does everyone else think???

Well I really enjoyed this one too. realistic as not always sunny at camp/events . And liked the teenage boy / girl stuff as not over the top like moden books such as riders. BUT like claire thought she was selfish as Peter was her friend and thought I she should of let him have Toad..Right at the beginning I was saying (let him have him) ..And thought her a bit mean with Fly selling him to just anyone.. But a good read.. Are the others mentioned horsey apart from free rein.?

Im with all that has been sayed so fare, Ruth is very selfish and one mided in this book she sales Fly of like he menes nuthing to her then she gets Toad with out a thort to what that will do to her friend Peter. I love it, its so difent from most outher pony books.

I agree with the others that I thought Ruth selfish, although when I read it as child I don't think I thought the same way, I was more on Ruth's side.
I think it could be as you say Claire that K M Peyton was trying to show that becoming too horsey, especially in a competitive way could change you for the worst. In Fly-by-night most of the more horsey people such as Pearl and the girl called Cats Eyes not sympathetic characters, compared to Ruth, even Peter had problems. But In The Team Ruth seems to be joining the horsey world more and getting less nice as a person. She goes from being upset when Pearl's mare has to be sold to selling her own pony to a man she doesn't like or trust.
I too like the realistic side of things, like haffyfan said about periods, etc. You couldn't imagine Noel having a period! ;D

I also was shocked Ruth sold Fly at all, let alone to a man she didn't like/trust (but then again I don't do parting), for this reason I do think she was a bit selfish not to give Toad up or at least swallow her pride (for Fly's sake) and ask Mr McxNair to take him. But I do not think she was selfish to not let Peter have him back just because he wanted him, after all she found him fair and square...you could argue Peter was selfish to put her in that position. I would have also kept hold of him if at all possible (although not to the extent of selling my once best friend).

haffyfan, I take your point but think ruth should of seen that Peter was in love with Toad like she was with Fly..(well bonded then) ! And he was a good friend to her..

Sorry haffy I also side with exmoorfan and think she was beng selfish over Toad. But it really made the book as it gave it great tension. It was obvious that Peter was her soul mate as they really understood each other, but the Toad thing put a big wedge between them. It gave the book an added depth compared to the first one in series. It also gave Peter a chance to work on the new horse (forgot its name!) and eventually defy his father.
One thing that also struck me was that I'd always thought that Ruth fancied Peter and I was a bit narked when she went of with Patrick Pennington in that series, but when I think about it I think she was more physically attracted to Jonathan (we have scenes of her watching him undressing etc) and Peter was more her friend on a spiritual level. I think he maybe fancied her but it was more platonic on her part. I think she fell for Patrick in the same way she fell for Fly as something totally unsuitable but inevitable. But still annoyed that she turned into a bit of a wet hen. (wont give any more away for those who havent read the Pennington series - no they are not horsy as someone asked)
Also do you agree there was more humour in this book than the first one? I love the bit where they try to head off Peters father by plying him with drinks etc.

Sirius was the horse of peter's claire...And agree it has more humour.. i thought peter seemed jealous that ruth liked jonathon..? It was me that asked it the others were horsey.? As those three are in them..So penningtons after free rein then.?? lol

No it's a similiar time scale (character age wise), possibly even a bit before but then again I think Ruth may have been a bit younger than the boys so not 100 % sure?
I am just reading Mid summer Nights Death (or whatever it's called) but am struggling to get into it (Maybe because I am reading the Sue series too by JMB...how different they are....LOL)

Is that the one where the teacher is found dead in the river or something like that? (sorry memory dreadful)
You cant really get further apart than JMB and KMP can you? But I like them both. I like the Sue series a lot.
Exmoorfan I'm sure I posted a little resume of the different books featuring the characters. Maybe on the Fly by night thread? I'll check and put it on here for you.
EDIT Blast cant find where I posted it. Anyway here are the books again with the characters in them and the order I think they are in:
PROVE YOURSELF A HERO - PETER AND JONATHAN FLY BY NIGHT - PETER RUTH THE TEAM - PETER JONATHAN RUTH MIDSUMMER NIGHTS DEATH - JONATHAN LAST DITCH/FREE REIN - JONATHAN AND PETER
PENNINGTON SERIES: PENNINGTONS SEVENTEENTH SUMMER - DIFFERENT CHARACTERS THE BEETHOVEN MEDAL - RUTH PENNINGTONS HEIR - RUTH MARIONS ANGELS (NOT READ NOT SURE WHO IS IN IT!)
In terms of chronology I think Prove Yourself a Hero would come first with Fly and the Team next and then Midsummer Nights Death. Then Free Rein.
I think the Pennington books with Ruth in them may come after Free Rein as she was 2 years younger than the boys. Ruth is mentioned in Free Rein but as I havent a copy to hand can't remember what it says. If it mentions Patrick Pennington then we could maybe work out it they come before or after Free Rein. Haffy have you got a copy you can check?
What is really odd is that if you look at the publishing dates Penningtons Heir in which Ruth is about 18 was written before The Team when she was about 14. Also Prove Yourself a Hero when Peter and Joanthan are boys was written after Free Rein where they are just about grown up. KM was obviously re-visiting some of her fav characters and giving them new backgrounds!

Yes Claire it is...only manged 1 and a bit chapters in about a fortnight! In Free Rein it mentioned Ruth like 'bad boys' or words to this effect, during a short conversation peter and Johnathan had, but it didn't mention Patrick, although I took it to mean him having read Penningtons 17th previously. Don't think I've got Beethoven medal, so another to look out for and remember not tackling Heir as it was one of her 'meatier' books! Speaking of which I still have Borden Deal to read but can't face all those pages...I knew their was a reason I liked kiddies books

I am desperate to read the Beethoven medal one as that is the one where Ruth meets Patrick. In Heir they are 'an item' and she seems to have completely gone off horses. I thought she was bats as if she'd married Peter she could have been surrounded by horses all day long and even with Jonathan she would have had money as I think his family were pretty well off. But she ends up....well wont say to spoil it for people who havent read the others yet.
Thanks for reminding me about the ruth bit in Free Rein I thought they said something like that so possibly it comes after Beethoven medal and before Penningtons Heir.
Haffy I am the opposite to you i LOVE long books as I read so fast. I feel like I have just got into a book and its finished. Takes me about 20 mins to read some of the little pony ones! I would love more Lord of the Ring sized books!

Well there is the Swallow series, but you probably know that one. Also the Nutty and Hoomey series which starts with 'Who Sir Me Sir' then 'Downhill All the Way' then there is another with a couple of the same characters in it, but forgot what its called. Will check up as sold a copy a few weeks ago. There is Small Gains followed by Greater Gains, a pair of historical horse related stories, and then the new Roman Pony adventures which so far consists of Minna's Quest and No Turning Back, but I think there will be more coming. We have already discussed the Pennington series, but if you have forgot or cant find the post its Pennington's Seventeenth Summer (or 'Last Term' in America), The Beethoven Medal (or 'If I should Marry' in America - gruesome title!) and then Pennington's Heir and apparantly Ruth and Patrick also appear in Marion's Angels, which I have but havent got round to reading yet so can't confirm. The other 3 are really good and worth reading.
BTW which book are you talking about with a weird ending?
