Been as it's a month to go until the start of Summer Reading Challenge i thought that I would start an discussion thread.
Been as it's Jubilee year here in the UK in honour of our dear Majesty I thought perhaps a book that involves some sort of celebration in it. Such as a birthday party or a hunt ball.
Other than that I have no other suggestions.
I can send out rosettes once again. However as I have a lot of rosettes I am not going to buy new ones. So there might be a possibility that you will be getting a duplicate as they will be sent out randomly. I will do my best to ensure that doesn't happen though.

I’m in! I was actually looking at the shelves, wondering what to use for the challenge this morning 😊
Will try to think of a category to suggest. Hunt ball sounds fun, trying to remember if I’ve seen one Come up in any book

Flambards has a hunt ball susanb. I was thinking of A Stable for Jill as a celebration as Cecilia has a birthday in it. I am pretty sure that one of the Chil Valley series has a hunt ball in it.

Maybe something that has a street party or carnival/fiesta...?

A Spanish Adventure by Pat Smythe might have a fiesta in it. I would be surprised if it hasn't got one in it. I havent read any of the Adventure series so can't be sure.

Wow....that is a coincidence...I actually bought Spanish Adventure a month or so ago. It turned up in the US so cheaply, in perfect condition, that I couldn't resist I can have a flip through and check.
There has to be one in Fiesta for Wild One by Peter Grey, which I don't have, but could try to acquire.

I checked, and there is definitely a fiesta in Spanish Adventure.
Isn't there a ball, or a big party in The Impossible Horse by CPT?

A couple more ideas for categories:
....how about one from your aging tbr pile (or list, if you don't have a pile)....a book that's been waiting its turn for a loooong time. One that you've been meaning to get to, but just haven't. When you list the book, you could provide a guesstimate of how long it's been lingering!
....a twist on the recommended book.....choose a book from among Claire's "five horseshoes" rated books

One more suggestion...for kicks, a specific book, so we all have one of the same in our challenge list? I was thinking Decie Merwin's Holiday Summer, as it's seasonal, cheap and easy to find in US/UK/Australia

Funny enough I received A Spanish Adventure today. Glad to know it's a possibility if Claire wants to do that category.

Hi folks apologies for being AWOL yet more connection problems plus I smashed my laptop screen !!
Great ideas for categories. I also thought as it’s all doom and gloom in the real world at the moment we could pick a funny read. Maybe even a reread a book that always makes you laugh out loud. On this topic, does everyone want to recommend a book again this year?
Lastly, just so I have an idea of the numbers please let me know in this thread if you would like to take part. I think we will start in around a month’s time.

Like the idea of a humorous book, definitely needed these days.
Have we ever done The Pony Problem by Barbara Holland? I think it would appeal to anyone who enjoyed The Horse in the House or The Dark Horse of Woodfield. At 122 pages, more of a novella than a novel, a quick enjoyable read.
So sorry about the laptop, that’s awful. I chipped the screen on my first, but it kept working till I was ready to get rid of it.
My phone on the other hand…..😫 croaked last week! I’d never had one actually die on me (though I lost one and laundered another 🙄)

Would it be a good idea to change the thread title to include “2022”, so that anyone glancing in will see that it’s for the kickoff of this year’s challenge?

I'd like to take part please.
Caroline Akrill's new eventers book is out on the 16th June so i will be including that, it could count as a funny read too as i'm sure there will be plenty of humour, and i suspect many will be eager to read it.
What about a book that's been included in a pony library as a category? Don't think we've ever done it before and it's open to lots of authors and in Collins and JA allan terms many books that were published in other editions in terms of people having copies/getting affordable copies.

Thanks, garaj!
Haffy , love the idea of a pony library book….off to scan the shelves to see what I haven’t yet read!
In looking earlier for possible books to include in my list, I realized I had a trio with a similar theme…so I’m off to the islands for part of my summer challenge with:
Summer on Wild Horse Island by Mary Elywn Patchett Wild Horse Island by Elisa Bialk Wild Pony Island by Stephen Meader

Hi all some great ideas for categories. I will get something drawn up and a thread started in the next few days. Good recommendation on the new Akrill book, Haffy.

What about picking a particular breed of horse/pony? We could perhaps change it each year for subsequent challenges. Or alternatively pick our favourite breeds and read a book featuring the breed?

love all the ideas, but I may not be able to hit them all, with only 10 books
I've got a rough list going:
Claire's 5 Horseshoe - Khazan by Joyce Stranger Humorous - No Ponies for Miss Pobjoy by Ursula Moray Williams
Pony book library - Clear Round for Katy by Delphine Ratcliff Celebration book - Spanish Adventure by Pat Smythe TBR book - Summer on Wild Horse Island by Mary Elwyn Patchett (had at least a decade, that awful cover art keeps putting me off!) Wild Pony Island by Stephen Meader Wild Horse Island by Elisa Bialk Midnight Horse by Monica Edwards Merrow Ponies by Judith Campbell Meet Me in St. Louis by Sally Benson (non-pony)
Several are authors I've never read before, which is always a goal for me...Joyce Stranger, Ursula Moray Williams, Delphine Ratcliff, Stephen Meader, Sally Benson. No Ponies for Miss Pobjoy is the only "top 10" humorous book that I hadn't yet read! I splurged and ordered copies of that and Khazan, awaiting their arrival now.

Pretty sure you'll enjoy Miss Pobjoy Susan. Khazan is also a good read. I also enjoyed Summer on Wild Horse Island, which coincidentally I read a couple of years back for the reading challenge from be TBR pile!
Will try and get the thread set up tomorrow folks.
Edit - forgot to add earlier - I like the idea of the 5 horseshoe read, which is probably a little easier to pick from than everyone recommending titles - although if anyone does want to, please fire away! When I start the thread I'll provide some examples of 5 horseshoe reads from the various categories.
