Found this on tv today, i had never seen it before but wasn't expecting much, lets face it the later Black Stallion books got more than a bit silly and so I didn't hold out much hope for the film. I was expecting lots of sand, tribal costumes and fake neighing - and that's pretty much what you get. Plus point is that there are genuine Arabs in it! Sadly film directors apparently still think that speeding up galloping horses is a good idea, no, it just looks ridiculous!!! But look out for the bad tempered chestnut who steals the show! Oh, and suspension of disbelief will require that you ignore the fact that the black stallion is a mare!!

Was there lots of annoying neighing? Directors seem to think that's all horses do all day long....

I have this in my DVD collection but haven't watched it for a while. I seem to remember there is a bit at the start or maybe end a sort of legend-y bit (for want of a better word!) where the supposed black Arab is actually a Friesian...? Is this the right film or have I completely lost the plot?!

Is this the right film or have I completely lost the plot?! Well yes Claire, you have completely lost the plot! Oh you meant the film?? Now I'll have to find it again as I actually missed the first ten minutes or so due to finding it by accident! The "stallion" throughout the film is a couple of rather sweet fillies but there may have been others I missed at the beginning. One concerning part is the appearance of a genuinely old and seriously underweight grey Arabian mare who is meant to be his dam, later seen pulling a cart and looking like an advert for Brooke Hospital, she suddenly changes to a much younger and fatter version, which makes me wonder what happened to the thin one and why was she so thin? now I'm intrigued and have to go find the Friesan!!

Oh I can't find the blankety blank DVD now! I think it might have been an extra on the DVD - something like the legend of how the Arab was formed or maybe how The Black was conceived lol. My memory is atrocious. It might have been a different film. I might even have dream it!!! If anyone has the DVD please could you check it out otherwise I'll definitely start thinking I've gone nuts.

OMG I am NOT going nuts after all. Found the bit I was talking about on youtube. Its the story of The Black's parents, father was some sort of horse god who came down out of the sky for a brief romance with Jinah the Arab mare. Must have been an extra on the DVD as I thought. Links below (in 2 parts). So what do you think folks is that a Friesan? Its certainly about as much an Arab as I am lol. Typical male tho - gets her up the duff then buggers off!

I give up, the last two times I tried to log in to POOOO boards my laptop crashed, wtf have they done to it - I never had any problems with the forum before! Anyway, what I was trying to come on here and say was that I def didn't see any of that in the film!! All I can imagine is that someone had a spare Friesan knocking around and they wanted it to earn it's oats!! Why on earth would you use that breed of all breeds as an Arab - especially pairing it with a genuine arab (which was a young colt from the looks of the topline!) - looked like Tom and Jerry! Nice bit of horsy film making , but no connection to the film, books or anything else!!

Sorry you are still having trouble with pooboards. I haven't heard from anyone else having that problem but I've noticed not a lot of people are logging on lately and a few as guests. We should start a petition to bring back the old proboards.
It was a lovely Friesan mind you. And at least I know now I didnt dream it. Cloud you are a gene nut - is it right that with that pairing the Black Stallion would actually have been grey...? Not to mention quite hairy lol.

I mind watching this a few years ago. Didn't think much of it at all!
I'd rather watch the original film, or its sequel.
