Hi all this month's reading circle is Tall and Proud by Vian Smith. This is actually the American title for King Sam (original British title) but as the USA edition is far easier to get hold and we have a few copies on offer for people to read, we will stick to this edition. Altho of course if you have King Sam you are quite welcome to join in too. (I don't know if there is any difference at all between the US and UK edition) As mentioned elsewhere this is not an easy book to get hold of in the UK but Susan has very kindly sent me a few copies of the book to distribute amongst the pumbles who would like to read it. If you haven't already put your name down please do so here. You may have to pass a copy on to the next person in line, depending on how many people would like to read it, but we will try to fit in everyone who is interested. American readers should have no trouble getting hold of the book, altho it may be quite hard for our Aussie friends to get hold of. Anyway will add poll and start discussion in about 10-14 days time.

Claire, I've got the UK edition (I've got ALL the editions, I did mention it was one of my favorites from childhood, right ) Anyway, the US edition has American spelling and has the following additional sentence at the beginning: "Gail looked from the window and it was there. Tall and proud, as high on the hill as a king. It seemed to be a dream come true, but the story of Gail and the dream come true did not begin there." That's all that was changed from UK to US edition...I'm guessing the title was changed because US publishers were afraid kids would think it was historic fiction and the added sentence more or less made the transition, from "king' to "tall and proud". All the other words are the same....I remember taking an embarassingly long time figuring out that a rug wasn't a carpet, but a horse blanket and that a head collar wasn't a cribbing strap but a halter!

Thanks for the info susan. So if anyone has King Sam and would like to read that edition rather than the US Tall and Proud, it seems like we will all be singing from the same hymn sheet so to speak.

Thank you rosie.
Its not too late to request a copy of the book but we are on the '2nd tier' so you may have to wait for the book to be passed on from someone who has just received a copy. But as there's no time-limit for posting on the book circle threads that shouldn't be a problem.

I read this within the last year- a second hand US copy wasn't that expensive off Amazon (~£6 maybe?). Fantastic story.
Have we ever had a thread on the differences in Brit/Yank/Aussie English for common horse terms?

Going to make a start on this now. I didn't fancy reading it earlier as I noticed there was some hospital stuff in it and what with the operation coming up it wasn't good timing!

I've never got over how sad I felt when I heard that after his death all the horses were sold - I had come to know them through his books, I hope they all found someone who loved them like he did. I shall be interested to read the book - though I think it is about racing?

Will keep you updated. I am going on a drug trial, the cancer I have is quite rare; bad luck to get it. I'm trying to be positive.

I've just joined the forum. I know this is very cheeky, but could I join this reading circle please and borrow "Tall & Proud"? I've been wanting to read this one for some time.

Hi all, anyone from the first lot of people who borrowed it, read it yet and could pass to Tamzin? Please let us know here or PM Tamzin. My copy is going to Kunuma when I've finished reading it.
Just a quick heads up for Fizz, there is quite a lot about the illness and recovery in it. There's quite a few chapters before the horsy stuff really starts. I am enjoying it so far tho.
