OT for the board, but I don’t think I’ve ever read Agatha Christie’s Hallowe’en Party 😉 I've read them all, my favourites probably close to 100 times It's not one of her classics but not bad. I might even have a re-read of it for Halloween.

I have Kindle Unlimited too so I am happy to go along with the book of short stories by Jane Ayre. I've just read another book by the author for the challenge which I enjoyed.

Hi all, it only seems like yesterday we were doing the Summer Reading Challenge, and now it's almost time for the Christmas/Winter read. Does any one have any suggestions? The book needs to be fairly easy to find and not rare or expensive, featuring Christmas preferably
Just in case you've forgotten what we have read so far, here's a list of some of our previous wintry reads:
A Riverdale Christmas - Amnada Wills Black Fury - Peggie Cannam The Christmas Pony - Wendy Douthwaite Pony and Trap - Kathleen Mackenzie Fury and the White Mare - Albert J. Miller The Christmas Pony - Sylvia Green Noe Frosty Christmas - Laura Hesse Phantom Horse - CPT The Ponies of Cuckoo Mill Farm - Catherine Harris Black Hunting Whip - Monica Edwards

Winter Ponies by Pamela Cockerill? Looks like there are a bunch of cheap copies available at the moment.

Excellent suggestion Susan. I don't think I've ever read it.

I haven't either, but it lurks in the tbr pile I just started Pluckrose's Horse, but didn't realize it was rare till I went to find copies online. Pony Winter by Gill Morrell looked fun, from your review, but it looks like it's unavailable outside the US. White Winter by Eleanor Helme has copies around, but they're not particularly cheap. Winter Pony by Jean Slaughter Doty is charming, but you really have to read Summer Pony first The only other one I could spot was Pony from the Farm by Mary Gervaise, and I think it would get to me after the holidays I'd give it a shot though, if others wanted to do it. Sorry to have been so long absent....I was on a Mabel Esther Allan marathon (it was lovely )

The book Plenty of Ponies by JPT features an winter scene with ice skating. Maybe a possibility? It's been recently reprinted as a full/first edition text by Jane Badger so is easily available either as a paperback or an ebook.

Both those suggestions are great. And Plenty of Ponies is a fun read at any time. Let me know folk if you have any preferances and we'll choose one of them.
Susan - I enjoyed Gil Morrel's books but sold them to someone a while back, thinking I would replace them at a later date. Now, annoyingly, they are really hard to find.

Mmm…I think I’d prefer to read something I haven’t read before.
If we’re going for a re-read, not sure I’m up to Plenty of Ponies, with the most disagreeable group of children ever to inhabit a pony book. I know that was the point, but still 🙄
Pony for Jean has a lovely Christmas section, if a re-read it’s to be?

Yes Susan I agree I think I would rather read something new than a re-read tbh. Although I quite enjoy the kid 's antics in Plenty. Anyone else have a preferance?
The one book I would really like to do as a Christmas read is The Intruders by Veronica Westlake. But sadly it's really hard to get hold of.

Agree re Intruders, I've read (and enjoyed) everything else by Veronica Westlake, but haven't snagged that one yet. I spotted a message Jane Badger had posted on Chronicle of the Horse, looking for any leads on contact info for Westlake, so it looks like she's trying to get permission to reprint, which would be AWESOME! Unfortunately, it was a couple of years back now, so it looks like she hasn't made contact yet

Bit late to the party but Horse of Fire (Jinny) is a good christmas one and most people probably have it. Jump to the top has a boxing day (i think!) meet. The Izzy brown christmas book is great too, can't think of it's title off top of my head. Pretty sure that's on kindle unlimited. There's a christmas holidays/winter themed short story in her Ravensbay series too.

I haven’t any of the Jinny books, but I do have Jump to the Top.!

I have the Jinny book and Jump to the Top, also Plenty of Ponies. But I agree with Susan, it would be nice to do something new rather than a re-read so I would go for Winter Ponies or the Izzy Brown Christmas book.

Sorry late with this but have been across to Spain for a week with poor intenet. Decided to go with Winter Ponies. Hopefully we can get a copy by Christmas. But if not then it's still a winter read.

Hi all, just wondering if anyone would like to take part in a spring group read? (getting this one in early0 If so any suggestions?
Also don't forget that you can still join in with the Winter read - Winter Ponies - as it's not just a Christmas themed read.

I’d love to join in….sorry to have been so long absent, had a minor eyeglass disaster that became major when supply chain/labor shortage issues caused a a delay in delivery of new ones…five weeks 😫

Hello Susan, sorry to hear that. It must have been very frustrating. It sounds like it's even worse over there than here trying to get hold of things.
For the Spring book: what about Spring at World's End by Monica Dickens, although it isn't the first book in the series.

Oh no Susan that's not good. Glad you are sorted again and nice to 'see' you again. It's been fairly quiet on here lately.
I'll check out and see how easy the World's End books are to find.

Thanks, Claire and Darkhorse...it was a fairly miserable 6 weeks (a week to get an appointment, 5 for the glasses), I feel like I just got out of prison! The Worlds end books are actually available on Kindle and, oddly, Spring was the cheapest at the moment. Just bought a copy, in case that's what we go for. I feel like we might have done Winter at Worlds End at some point....I'm not fussed about reading things out of order, I seem to do it by accident anyway I'm game for anything cheerful and spring-like!

Thanks for checking that out susan. Rather coincidentally not long ago I got hold of a beautiful condition first edition of the book. Lovely dustjacket! I'm normally a bit anal about reading things in order but, as I've read the World's End books a few times years back, it wouldn't bother me in this case! As it appears fairly easy to get hold of I think we will go with it for the spring read.

I have the whole series, although only in paperback. If we are sticking with Spring at World's End as our Spring Read I may have a re-read of the whole series.

Hi yes Darkhorse we are going to do Spring Comes to World's End as our group read for Spring/Easter. I've just set up a thread for it. For once I'm setting this up early to give people plenty of time to get a copy. Hopefully will give more people a chance to join in as the reading groups have been a bit sparse lately. Discussion of the book will start in the Easter hols/beginning of April.

Can hardly believe it but it's that time of year again - time to choose a book for our early Autumn/Halloween read.
Any suggestions? If not I will think of something...

They've got Christmas decorations up in my supermarket . Yet it's a bizarre 83F, 29C here today! Not sure if it counts as spooky, but tossing it out, just in case: The Black Unicorn by Tanith Lee It seems like there should be soooo many autumn books, but I can never think of them when I want to

I think everywhere seems to be going through a mild spell at the moment. It's been quite warm here the last few days, as has Spain, I've heard from my friends there. Nice, (and has made it easier to justify stretching out the summer challenge a bit longer lol) but would have been nicer in July or August which were pretty awful over here!
Anyway, back to the subject in hand. Just been reading last year's comments on here in which Susan was talking about Halloween Party by Agatha Christie. If you didn't read it last year Susan, would you fancy doing it as a non-pony Halloween read? What do other folk think? We seem to have covered the bulk of the spooky pony titles already.

I didn't read it last year, so yes, I could certainly do it this year....I do love Agatha Christie, and I have a long train journey coming up, which would make a perfect pairing

I'd also be up for the Agatha Christie book. It must be at least 20 years since I've read any of her books and then only the famous ones like Death on the Nile and Murder on the Orient Express. I do remember I enjoyed them so I'm not sure why I haven't re-acquainted myself with her before now.

That's great that both of you fancy doing the Christie book. It's also a nice change to group-read a non-pony book. One good thing - Agatha Christie book are really easy to find! I'll set up a thread for that asap. Hopefully one or two other folk may also join in.
