Yeah the paperback copy of McFadden is very cute. I just realised I don't have a pic of the American edition of the book on my website - something else on the ever growing 'to do' list!
I've read the e-book sample of Ride a Dead Horse and that's fine. Doesn't look like it will be mega short. Its defo a YA book judging from age of heroine and subject matter. May be self published but its far better written than many. Worth a look.
Stealaway is short (and aimed at younger readers than the average Peyton book but as far as I can remember it's got a bit of depth to it) - another reason why I picked it. Hopefully we may then be able to fit in another reading circle book before the Christmas one. (Agghhh can't believe I'm talking about Christmas already - saw my first Christmas tree 2 weeks ago in a pub!!! Mad!!)

Whether my memory is faulty or not and it is subjectively long or short, Mr. McFadden's Halloween is wonderful and I hope everyone will enjoy it next year.
Riding a Dead Horse does seem like a decently written book; just the typesetting looks a little amateurish. I am going to read it this week as well as Stealaway.

Sounds good....my copy of Stealaway has already arrived, McFadden is actually due on Halloween! I'll be ready for next year. Oddly enough, the copy I've got on order via ebay from California is the British hardcover. It is weird that abe should be so much cheaper than Amazon.....doesn't the latter own the former now? Best buy up those cheapo copies before they become expensive. (Bonus: the Puffin cover is ridiculously adorable.) Crumbs, is there anything that Amazon doesn't own?? I feel rather guilty about that as I do all my Christmas shopping etc and get all my animal food off Amazon, so I'm adding to their global conquest!!! But having no shops near and none fit to do any real shopping in, no book shops, and nowadays needing a short distance to carry things to the car - it just makes life easier! That spam bot is a very polite and complicated one - but so obviously fake that it makes you wonder who would be daft enough to fall for it and so what's the point of doing it??

The spammer is a bit odd, I don't see much point to it. Answered a couple of the questions as I thought it may help someone who really is interested in the topics which is also why I haven't deleted them as yet. But probably will on reflection.
Amazon owns Abe but Abe runs itself as a separate subsidiary company. I've sold books on both sites and they have complete different rules and regulations, fees, etc. So it's really like 2 completely separate companies in terms of what books are available. But it is odd to find such a huge discrepancy between price/availability between the two.
Anyhow back to the subject matter in hand, I am setting up the Stealaway thread tonight.

Hi all, would like any suggestions for a Christmas read please. Something with a bit of Christmas or at least winter content. Otherwise anything goes as long as it's fairly upbeat and not too hard to find/expensive.

Ooh can't remember which Jinny book that was in - anyone?? - it was a bit of a weird incident. Have we ever had a Jinny book in our reading circle? I know that it's a bit of a love/hate series so could generate a bit or argument haha.

Oh yes, there is a Christmas Jinny one - wasn't it also the depressing one about the deer poachers though?? Haven't read the Shantih series for a while, will have to do a quick reread. We will have to sit Haffy down with a stiff drink before we tell her she has to read a Jinny book LOL

I understand Ann Goes Hunting by John Smyth has good Christmas content. Pony and Trap by Kathleen MacKenzie is set in winter Northern Lights by Lorna Hill Winter Ponies by Pamela Cockerill
A couple of US books that are pretty common: Fury and the White Mare by Albert G. Miller has a lot of good Christmas content - I checked abebooks, and there are cheap copies in the UK and in Australia Christmas Horse by Glenn Balch - only one copy in the UK on abebooks, but really cheap

Some good suggestions there Susan. I'd like to pick one of yours this time, as you always come up with lots of great ideas for the reading group but somehow we usually end up doing something else! I'm dithering between picking Winter Ponies and the Fury book. The latter looks to be the easiest to find in all 3 countries (and I don't think we've done an American Christmas read before - which would be good) but I'm slightly concerned that it's the last book in the series - do you need to read the other 2 to appreciate this one Susan, or is it OK as a stand-alone read? Winter Ponies is also a good choice because its a stand-alone and fairly easy to find in USA (very easy in UK).
I think it may be cruel to force haffy to read a Jinny at Christmas time - maybe next year sometime haha...

I'd say the Fury books could be read in any order...if I remember correctly, I read them out of order myself (I seem to specialize in that...I read Shirley Faulkner-Horne's trilogy in reverse order - 3, 2, 1!). It's been a long time since I read Fury and the White Mare, but the ending, with the huge blizzard and everyone snowed in at the ranch at Christmas stays in my memory vividly. I've got all the books, except Ann Goes Hunting, which I actually have on order (hmmm....there I go again reading the last book first ), so I'm good with any of them.

Oh Fury - a big part of me still lives in that series - that horse! I know he was a Saddlebred and nowadays they are a travesty - or at least the way they are treated and handled is - but how I fell in love with that horse! There are so many tales about what happened to the real horse after the series ended - one sad one is him being sold on and found and rescued in a bad state - shades of Black Beauty. Not only do I vote for the Fury one, but I now know what I'm asking for for Christmas!

Well thats settled it - we'll go for Fury. I have all the books in the series but haven't got round to reading them yet so I better get cracking with book 1...
Will get thread set up in the next day or two.

Hi all, would anyone like to nominate a book for our next reading circle. Maybe something controversial or unusual? (As long as it's fairly easy to find and not rare and expensive.)

Are we thinking old or new? I've just reread jpt's A Job With Horses which I like because it reminds me of my first horse job - and boy could that one make a book!

I'm on board for AbJob with Horses, I have it sitting on the shelf. Was really hoping we would choose something I already have as I really don't want to buy anymore books!

LOL yes that's my problem - I only read free ones! But I have discovered this brilliant thing, if you join an author's fan club you get freebies! Of course then you are frustrated because you finish up getting loads of first of series books and not being able to buy the rest, but I've got about 20 free books this way!! Since I suggested it though I'll happily post mine on to UK readers (sorry everyone else) to borrow.

What fan clubs are you in Kunuma? And how did you join? Wouldn't mind a few freebies as I'm a little skint at the moment! Well it's sci fi/fantasy - and it's all to do with this indi author thing, which I thought for ages meant they wrote books about a certain type of music - but it dawned on me eventually. They all want to be followed on all the social media platforms, that is tricky for me as I think social media is - well we won't go into that but it isn't my favourite thing! However if you leave reviews for their books they often let you have one for free, as well as getting freebies off the web site - I'll look up a couple of my faves - my problem is I got so many books all at once - I can't remember who wrote what! I've got one to review at the moment, trouble is though the story is OK, I've got problems with his concept of humans good, all other species all over the universe - bad! all his baddies seems to be insects, and molluscs - from my experience with the human race, I'm supporting the insects! Going to be tricky to write him a review!

I'm trying very hard to "read and weed" myself.....it is tough!

It's even worse with e-books as you get to read them seconds after purchase - far too much temptation !!!
