Sorry to hear about your mum Trixiepony. Hope she gets well soon.
I was going to suggest a Jill or Jinny book, Brumby has beat me to it on Jill.

We'll both Jill and Jinny I have mmm I would say Jinny as we agree to well over Jill. The discussions are more exiting when we don't agree. Mums doing much better thank you all, she's back from the hospital and getting stronger again.

Oh Trixie sorry to hear your Mum has been poorly and you've been through a stressful time. Hope she makes a speedy recovery. Well I must say I did promise to do a Jill book soon so thanks for reminding me Brumby and Darkhorse. Actually I don't think we'd all be in the same camp on some of the Jill books as she does turn into a bit of a pothunter/riding snob. What about Jill Enjoys Her Ponies? Jill gets right on my goat in that one. I don't think we'd all agree on that. I think we will do Jill this time and a Jinny for the next one. Haha funny how we all like a good argument ermm discussion...

I'll go for "Jill Enjoys Her Ponies" as I've just finished it and found it an interesting book

Outfoxed by Rita Mae Brown. Such a rich read and so evocative of autumn and the natural world and the spooky world!

Hi all, sorry I have not been able to check in here lately and get this organised. Have been away and though there was supposed to be internet access it was very erratic! It's getting a little late to choose a print title to read which everyone could get their hands on in time for Halloween. However I do have a couple of suggestions. Firstly, if you can cast your mind back to our Christmas read last year, One Frosty Christmas by Laura Hesse, she also wrote a Halloween themed tale - The Great Pumpkin Ride. I know one or two of you bought the 3 in 1 kindle edition which included that one as well as the Christmas story so that would be fine for you, also for those of you who don't have it the Kindle edition of the single title is cheap and of course it's quick to download an e-book. Otherwise I thought I could find a ghostly short story, scan it and put it on here for those of you who didn't already have it in your collection.
Let me know if any of these suggestions appeal.
BTW Rally I do agree that Outfoxed would have been a good Autumnal read, and it's quite an interesting and quirky take on the normal horse story. Maybe next year?

I'm for the Great Pumpkin Race too. I have the 3 in 1 Kindle edition. In fact it's done me a favour by reminding me to read the other two on it. I read the first one, enjoyed it and meant to read the others soon after. But as usual life got in the way and I forgot.

Haha yep I know what you mean Darkhorse, me too! Well as there's a handful of us at least with the book, I'll set up a thread for The Great Pumpkin Ride.

Don't worry the Autumn read thread is still going strong if you want to join in, however thought we'd get the ball rolling with suggestions for a Christmas read. I'd like to suggest The Christmas Pony by Sylvia Green. This is a really 'Christmassy' book and full of heartwarming Christmas spirit (and I don't mean gin or whisky!) It's about a group of kids who try and earn money to save a pony. Also its very easy to find and cheap in both the UK and USA (1p or $1 dollar on Amazon). Not sure about Australia. There's also a 2 in 1 edition which also contains a Christmas cat story which is the one I've got. As its aimed at slightly younger readers than the norm its also a quick easy read (but without being too childish). If you fancy doing this one or if you have any other suggestions of an easy to find Christmassy read please post here.

Alternatively there is another book also called A Christmas Pony by Wendy Douthwaite. Again fairly easy to get hold of and low cost. Here's a link to the Amazon.com page for the book.

Apologies, Claire...I just haven't been feeling the holiday-specific-modern-book thing....next time a vintage story is on the slate, promise, I'll jump right in!

I'll go with the Sylvia Green one, I've also found a spare copy which I can send anyone as an early Christmas pressie. Will set up a thread shortly. No probs Susan, we have done a few modern ones lately so probably due an older book soon. That said I'm quite eager to do the new Caroline Akrill book as our next read in the New Year.

Hey folks I'm still fancying doing the new Caroline Akrill (The Last Baronet) for our Jan/Feb read. Anyone else up for it? I can pass my copy round to one or two people when I've read it if anyone didn't get one from Santa.

Hi all, well it's time to start thinking about our Spring reading circle book. As Susan noticed earlier it's a while since we did a traditional/older book so I thought we could go back to something like that. Also perhaps a Spring or Easter theme may be nice? Any suggestions would be gratefully received, just remember it should be something that is fairly easy for everyone to get hold of and not too pricey. I'll also have a think and let's see what we can come up with. Susan - if you are reading, you're welcome to suggest something as it was you who pointed out we have concentrated on more modern books lately.

Sorry to have been so long absent....I dislocated my elbow at end of January, and I'm only just able to type again (a few weeks ago I couldn't even tie my shoes or floss my teeth, so a vast improvement!)
I'm game to read any good vintage book, it wouldn't have to be seasonal.
That said, if you're definitely going for Easter, there is Easter the Showjumper by H.M. Peel, Castle in Northumbria by Lorna Hill, The Pony Trackers by Marjory Proctor and Easter Meeting by Elizabeth Waud. The first is out as a paperback from GGB, but not sure how easy/cheap the others would be to source.
Will have a think and see if I can come up with something good, cheap, available in the UK that we haven't read before...getting tougher and tougher!

Hi Susan, ooh that sounds painful, hope you are fully recovered.
No it doesn't really have to be seasonal/Easter related, it was just a thoght. I'll check out some of your suggestions, as to how easy they are to get hold of in various places. I think Pony in the Luggage may be the easiest to find. I quite fancy The Pony Trackers or Easter Meeting as I haven't read them before, but these may be harder to get hold of. Anyhow, like I said I'll have a nosey.
