Hey everyone Just wondering what everyones views are on Parelli? Personally, I need to have a rant about it. But I was hoping someone could either tell me a bit more about it, and why they think its good, or join in my ranting I don't really understand it, although i've watched a lot of videos and read up on it, and sometimes I think the results could have been obtained a lot easier with more traditional methods. Any views?

When I am trying to assess someone who is working with/handling horses or dogs - I watch the animals, as far as I am concerned, show me the animal and I'll show you the owner sort of thing! You can do this on TV too, it's almost easier, as the camera picks up suble changes in body language of the animal on a close up especially. It's a sort of extension of what I liked to do even as a child, watch the animals acting in films and work out the signals etc they were working from that were off camera! That said, showmanship can fool a lot of the people - a lot of the time!! I'm waffling on firstly because having spent a lot of today persuading a 15 years young horse that it was possible to walk over a pole without risk of death - and being determined that she would do it of her own volition and not being driven over it, my way is flippin' slow!! Even having said that though - I'll join in your rant mysteryarab. I have not been impressed by his disciples that I have come across over here either!!

Well, you've got to have patience with horses (which you did) and it just seems to me that their methods dont include that. And I have a few friends who do it, and guess what? All of them have had bad experiences or seem too nervous to ride. And its not just me who says this, everyone i've spoken too does. Of course their are exceptions to the rule, but I sat in on a lesson, and the whole time I was freaked that her 'event horse turned parelli horse' would freak and run from the whip being whizzed round his head/ball being bounced on his back/fillers he was walking sideways over. And whilst its nice that he can do this, I just think... why would you want a horse to do this? I rarely ride with a crop, but if I did I think i'd want the horse to see realise it means to put a bit more effort into what hes doing, that way I wouldnt actually have to use it! I'm a bit soft And they kinda need to percieve real danger! And dont get me started on all the parelli equipment which is the same as normal lunge lines and whips, except 3 times the price. Some natural horsemanship is lovely though, I recently read a book by one guy who really knows his stuff. And no mention of giant bouncy balls either!

I've never heard of this before so I did a quick google and watched a you tube video. www.parellinaturalhorsetraining.com/I have to say it doesn't do it for me. I'm not interested in watchng a horse jumping with a giant ball at it's side. It just looked like a wild west show or a circus!

I've heard of it but don't know much about it and tbh dont really get the balls bit. If we are talking natural horsemanship I much prefer Monty Roberts methods which actually seem more natural.
Anyway I dont trust men with huge moustaches like Pat Pirelli's! ;D

Mmm, I like the idea of natural horsemanship, but not the show off stuff and the price. All I wont is to be and feel happy and safe with a horse, and know if I ask It will do. But what do you see but a silly show off doing crazy stuff with his horse when you go to the shows.

Well the Parellis have shown their true colours - and it wasn't pretty. I expect most people have seen the vids and heard the story by now, if not I'll try and be organised enough to post a link. Suffice to say that those of us who had serious reservations before about their so called training techniques, have been proved right!

There is a youtube vid of it. Not great quality and short but you can see how frightened the horse was and that they put a twtich on him. I dont call it natural horsemanship, or horsemanship of any kind.

Oh and theres his wife showing us a perfect example of how no to... wait what is she even trying to do? Make the poor one eyed horse head shy?! Maybe I don't know everything but I have strong views when it comes to hitting a horse anywhere near its head. To me it looks like hes confused and trying everything to see what she wants. Argh makes me so angry, especially as this was shown on one of their DVD's! If you look in the drop down info thing on the actual video there are a lot more interessting links

Mysteryarab have you seen the loading ones - some links to them and interesting comments on the IHDG ihdg.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=ght10&action=display&thread=107316Someone makes an interesting comment about the behaviour of the owner in one of them, who is gazing starry eyed at PP and not caring that her horse is being traumatised - at the risk of sounding sexist would he have got the acclaim and the following that he has, if there were not so many impressionable, and totally incompetent female horse owners out there looking for an easy fix for their horses and a pin up for themselves??

Oh god thats just made me even angrier. The poor thing doesnt even look bothered by the trailer, its the big fool swinging the rope around that scares it! Why's he making it jump the trailer ramp!? Thats a sure way to cut a fetlock. And he never actually gets her in the trailer...

Totally agree mysteryarab. He was just frightening and confusing the poor thing. And what was all that twaddle about numbers he was spouting? How can he attempt to communicate with horses when he can't even communicate with humans? Compare with Monty's method of getting a horse to load:

There has been an uproar from us little folk about the Parelli revelations, but at last some of the (hopefully) genuine IH practitioners are also condemning their actions. Though I am not sure what will really help the horse as long as he is still with his present owners, who openly condoned the appalling treatment of their horse. www.barnmice.com/video/chris-irwin-responds-to-pat
