All this talk of Mystery on the Moor and the recent bidding on the Caroline books on ebay has got me wondering...what is the rarest pony book of all? Candidates have got to include Mystery on the Moor, Caroline Canters Home, First edition of Silver Snaffles, The Wild One, Five Foals and Phillipa and The Deep Sea Horse. Can anyone think of any others they would like to put forward as really rare. Also has anyone got/seen/had copies of these ones or any other rare ones. Are there any none of us have ever come across before? It would be interesting to work out the rarest one of all.

Books I consider hard to find/rare are:-
* Jackie's Steeplechase Adventure by Judith M Berrisford (only once seen a copy for sale) * Little Black Pony by Christine P-T * The Sophy Series by Christine P-T, particularly "The Best Pony for Me" (had terrible trouble getting hold of that) * It Began With Picotee by all 3 P-T sisters * Suspicion Stalks the Moor by Josephine P-T

I agree with Jackies steeplechase adv I am finding that one very hard to track down. Yes, to the little black pony too, although saw it go recently on ebay for a small amount. Kicked myself as didnt bid on it! I would say Pictoee is less rarer than the others. I have had a couple of copies through my hands. I did have a copy of Mystery once, also the wild one and silver snaffles 1st ed, but have never got my mitts on the 2nd and 3rd caroline books, deep sea horse or 5 foals. I only know one person with that one!

Jackies steeplechase adv - this sold for about £20 in a lot of 4 on Australian ebay a couple of weeks ago. Unfortunately I forgot to bid!

I have sold two copies of suspicion in last 6 months or so...plus I own a copy and also Steeple Chase adventure (which was only a couple of pounds off abe and found it as soon as I looked for it) so not sure about those myself? Would agree with Deep Sea Horse and Five Foals (I would love that and have had it on pre order forever).
I would nominate Night storm, Gay Darius, Easter or Dido and Rouge by Hazel Peel as rarest of all as apart from someone bought Nightstorm on a buy now for pennies not long ago (no names but lucky bugger knows who they are if they read this and will make a mint!) they never come up for sale and when they do make good money.
I am kicking myself as my mum threw Caroline Canters Home away a few years ago (with Mystery and some other treasures) and I passed up buying it for £35 and If I could Ride For £12 on Amazon last summer!! Doh!

haffyfan forgot about the h m peel books, you're right they are very rare. Hmm how did I miss Nightstorm I have an alert on it! I think you must have been lucky with steeplechase tho as I have been looking for it for ages.
I think its harder to find the rare ones now with ebay so dominant. They used to go to charity shops and car boot sales, now everyone puts them on ebay and they are bid up to high prices.

I've got Caroline Canters Home and a 1st American of Silver Snaffles (virtually identical to 1st UK, came out at same time)....Silver Snaffles was hard to find and expensive, but I lucked out with Caroline....it wasn't cheap, but not wildly expensive either....there was a copy available in Australia via abebooks when I first went looking for it, and I just snapped it up....pure luck, really (combined with a bit of impuse buying that panned out well!)
I'd nominate Kathleen Herald's (K.M. Peyton) Crab the Roan as a pretty hard to find book....I've been hunting for several years now with no luck. Also Sabre, Horse from the Sea in collectable condition....I keep seeing copies with torn, tattered, dirty djs.
Penny's Worth by Nancy Caffrey (known best in the UK for Pony Duet) is proving impossible to find for me.....after, like an idiot, I held off buying a lovely copy on abe for $50, the only copy out there now is an ex-library, no dj, ratty copy for $210.

I had forgotten about Crab Susan, that is rare. there is a nice copy of sabre on ebay at min but do agree in general...my copy is nice condition but minus DW but was quite reasonably priced. I have never come acrosss Nancy caffrey...would you recommend her?
I also now wish i'd done some impulse buying when i saw the Caroline books!

Oh yes forgot about Crab too, that must be one of the hardest ones to find. I am lucky I have a nice copy of sabre with dustjacket which I got for christmas. Does have part of the spine missing but all of front and back. It is really irritating when you dont buy books for some reason only to find they have tripled in price the next time you go to look for them. Done it loads of times!

Other ones I have just thought of:
Rivals to silver eagle by Primrose Cumming Ride to Freedom by Sheila Chapman
Anyone got a copy of either of these?
Also most of the Peggie Cannam ones seem really hard to find.
It would be quite interesting to compile a 'top 10' of the rarest pony books. Might do one for the website. (You can tell I don't get out much ;D )

Forgot those ones too! I keep looking at buying the german version of Ride To Freedom but they never do paypal (not to mention it will take me a month to read it), I think there is a german version of caroline Canters Home too so might have to get that that way too.
Jane Mcilvaines Cammie books are pretty rare too apart from Challenge which was a seagull lib one.

Haffyfan you clever thing you can read German! I only know a few words what I can remember from school, certainly not enough to read a book. Pity they dont do it in Spanish I might have a crack at it then! Arent a lot of H M Peel's books also published in German. as well as Sheila Chapmans & Caroline. Seems to be a good language to learn for a pony book fan!

Not clever really...have to type whole paragraphs into translate at times! Yes I think your right about Hazel Peel...you can get Jago and the pilot books at least...lots of Jo Furmingers were done in german too and much cheaper than our copies!

Hi Haffy,
Re Nancy Caffrey......enjoyable, geared towards the younger reader. I'd not say she was a grade "A" calibre author, but worth trying if you happen to come across cheaply.
Her best book was Mig o'the Moor, but it does tend to be hard to find/expensive....it was a departure for her, because of the fantasy element, and by far superior to her other books. Her most beautifully illustrated works (worth it for illustrations alone) are Show Pony and Horse Haven, both illustrated by Paul Brown. Pony Duet, because it was published in the UK, would be the one you're most likely to come across, and it would probably be pretty cheap.

Is that Ronweld (or something like that). I asked them once when I bought a couple of books from them but they never gave the secret away. i've got Water Wagtail - nothing special but nice cover (except mine was a scanned version of the original cover) - didn't spot that when reading description of book.

It's not ronweld........she has an ebay shop that sells lots of pony books amongst others.....but user name is very similiar it's Ron something or other. Lives in same county as me too so no idea where they source from as I only know of one very good shop and a few that are pretty rubbish when it comes to pony books!

I saw that, Silk Purse in a charity shop, but it was £15 and I couldn't afford it at the time!

How about Glenda Spooner - The Silk Purse? Silk Purse with a wrapper - definatly! There is/was one on ebay recently without, mine is without too, anyone even know what the jacket looks like? Another one I am after but am very loath to spend a lot on is Gillian Baxters Ponies To The Rescue...that seems scarce and is very expensive and went for silly money on ebay a while back to say the books are not that popular really and quite young!

Yes, I was bidding on ponies to the rescue was suprised it went for so much as you cant give the other books in the series away. I'm sure garej has recently got a copy of that one, not sure if she was the ebay bidder or got it elsewhere...garej??
