Just seen the long range forecast and we could have the snow for another 2 weeks here!!! I'm sick of it already. I dont think some of the large delivery lorries have been able to get here cos all the shops are pretty empty. There was no bread anywhere today. Got a couple of buns but when they run out may have to make my own bread! ;D At least we won't run out of milk cos plenty of cows about

We got about 8 inches over a period of 3 days....like frozen water-torture! So slooooowwww. Other areas on the coast (of Massachusetts) got much more snow, and a good bit of tidal damage/flooding, as it was an onshore wind coupled with astronomical high tide.
Claire, you must really live in a remote area if they literally can't get delivery trucks in with food...that's awful! I hope they manage to clear things up soon!

I dont really live in that remote an area. But some of the roads are quite bad and maybe those huge lorries they use to deliver nowadays have trouble on them. Either that or everyone has gone mad and stocked up with all the food in case they get snowed in. Some of the people from the little villages nearby have been literally snowed in for a few days so it could be them stockpiling all the food. But I have never seen the shelves so empty! We do have some big supermarkets a few miles away on bigger roads so they are probably better stocked. It still sounds like you have it worse over there, although there have been a few deaths here due to the weather. It is bad for the UK. We dont normally get snow lasting this long and we are not really prepared for it in this country.

It's hot here. hot hot hot hot boring boring boring. can't ride, can't garden, can't sleep at night. snakes, flies, mosquitos and more snakes. kids home on long school break, fighting and shouting and driving me bonkers. And I think I have a throat infection coming on.
Still, hope you are all ok and the snow abates soon- it must be yukky when it starts to melt! Stay safe all xoxoxo

Yep you'll be getting what we already have rosie The long range forecast (admittedly not the most trustworthy thing in the world - remember the long hot summer we were supposed to have lol) is saying that unless there is a freakishly high pressure system appearing we could have very cold weather to march and it be the coldest winter in 100 years! I hope not! The national grid is starting to get worried cos we are using so much power for our heating and the grit is running out in scotland! They'd just got the roads cleared here and we had another 4 inches last night. Its just getting silly. Cally tbh we cant do any of those things either because of the cold and snow, at least we dont have flies and things tho! Anyway off to buy a sledge.... ;D

More snow forecast here as well. School has already been closed 2 days (one for INSET during which the boiler broke down - again -leaving the rooms at a cool 11 celcius). And then today as the boiler was still broken (rooms now at 6celcius) We had to huddle in the office for a bit and do paperwork stuff - but able to go home now!

Feet of the stuff now - well OK inches anyway - beginning to look at the dog food bins and slightly panic - down to my last pint of milk too! Had a Ring Ouzel on the bird table today - I was so excited, I have never seen one before!

It's still pretty tolerable here in Massachusetts, (-2c, wind chill -6 at the moment) though it's getting bad in other areas...the Northern Plains expect wind chills of -29c to -34c tomorrow. There have been a number of deaths across the country, mostly in areas where it usually doesn't get so cold.....Tennessee, Texas, etc.....even Florida is experiencing sub-freezing temperatures.
Re your national grid under strain....is most of your heating in the UK electric? Here it tends to be heating oil or natural gas, so we see the strain on the grid in the summer, when temperatures skyrocket and the use of air conditioners and fans rise. During really bad heat waves, office buildings have shut off lights in lobbies, people are encouraged to do laundry or run dishwashers at night, when consumption drops, etc......there have been instances of "brown out" when the grid has literally failed in some areas (California, more often than not).

susanb.. Thats what we worry about most. When we have bad weather everything comes to a standstill due to road closures and power cuts. The overhead lines get overcome with snow and our power lines can't cope..

susan its been -8 round here the last couple of nights not sure what the wind chill is. cant imagine temps of -34 that is scary! I didnt think it ever got cold in Florida???!!!
I would say we have more gas heating than electric but its usually controlled by electric thermostats etc also we do use a lot of leccy as well. The thought of everything going off in this weather is frightening. As exmoorfan says our country is hopelessly prepared for anything.
Hope you lot down south dont get it as bad as up here.

Well Just been out with the pups and we have another inch so far.. The people in the village are mostly worried about power cuts if the lines can't cope.. We will have to hibernate in bed with the dogs if so.. At least they keep me warm.lol Good luck everyone..

Ahhh....I understand now! It's unusual for snow to bring our power lines down, but ice will do it every time, and I expect you get more icing in your snow than we do....there was an ice storm that hit Maine badly about a year ago (just before Christmas) and they were left without power for a couple of weeks....not a pretty picture (I think they were just about to burn a few power company officials to keep warm when the power finally came back on).
-34 isn't all that out of the ordinary for the Dakotas, but the cold is VERY unusual for Florida (or any part of the deep South)....my local weather reporter was commenting on the fact that it was warmer today in Boston, Massachusetts than it was in Atlanta, Georgia.....the world turned upside down! They're very worried about the citrus crop and some wildlife right now....let's just say that ice is very bad for oranges and iguanas.
You guys make sure to bundle up....hope everyone has enough dogs for a three dog night (if not, maybe it's time for a trip to the animal shelter!).

I grew up thinking that this is how winter was in the UK (my dad was from Yorkshire) so is this exceptionally severe, or have winters become milder in the last 20-30 years? Or is the snow coming further south than usual?
Do you know, Xmas & snow are so linked here that not only do we have it on cards & decos. but in TV ads as well? And I can GUARANTEE that it does NOT snow here at Xmas. How can people be so DUMB in this day and age?!?

Had a Ring Ouzel on the bird table today - I was so excited, I have never seen one before! I've never seen one of them either. Poor birds (and wildlife in general) must be having a hard time of it right now. Woke up to tons of the white stuff this morning Grrrrr!

Hi Cally yes the winters have got less severe here, they did used to be like this but we have got soft lol! Normally the hills and northern areas do get it like this but not the lower lying towns and the south and it doesnt normally last this long either. The last snow this bad was apparently 1981 and I can remember lots of snow like this when I was a child. That is strange about the snow on cards and stuff over there, but you do get snow in parts of australia don't you I remember it in the Silver Brumby books! Just got back in and its started to blizzard again sob!

We had about a foot of the stuff overnight.. Pups delighted. It is pretty but with a freeze forecast may not be so good. My village is very supportive and close so that is helpfull.. We have been doing errands for those that can't travel the snow today.

Well the South West pretty well shut down today - we had a blizzard here! Deepest snow I have seen for a long while and a bit scary to think this may go on for days as i don't have a helicopter handy! If it lasts over the weekend we are all going to go on rations!

The post seems to have stopped here still waiting for something my friend posted 1st class a few days ago and havent seen the postie all week! Anyone else find this?
Also they have refused to empty any bins in part of Sunderland where all my family live as they say it is too dangerous to drive the bin lorries on certain roads. So there is about a months worth of rubbish lying around there!

I know your'e all having a hard time over there but there was a photo on The Sun website of snow coming down in London, with a double decker red bus and some black cabs with shiny lights etc and it looked so beautiful.
Yes we get snow in the mountains, but not many people live there- most of the Snowy Mtns is a National Park (3 million acres) and there are ski resorts and small towns mainly on the outskirts. It rarely snows here in Canberra and it's never what I'd call 'proper' snow like you're having!

I ordered a new phone at 2 pm tues and it came weds morn, I was shocked as the roads are bad. The local farmers are snow ploughing around here with their tractors but I was really cross yesterday when driving down a back lane hill I met a young kid (looked about 12) driving a tractor and bucket and he just paniced and stopped in the lane while i skidded down the hill , unable to stop, bouncing off the hedge. I missed him, just, but surely young kids shouldn't be allowed to drive tractors while it's dangerous like this - he wasn't even getting the snow off the road but compacting it making it worse! I hope you are all ok in this weather and your anmals - my ponies are in the barn stuffing obscene amounts of hay and my gsd's are loving the snow and run in it rubbing their noses in it (nutters!)

Scary zoe glad you are OK. Well if he was only 12ish he shouldnt be driving on the road. Mind you if your anything like me anyone under 20 looks about 12! ;D
We have had yet MORE snow overnight, however it is forecast to get up to the dizzy heights of 1 or 2 degrees on the weekend!!! Get those bikins out girls!
Kunuma great idea about sending snow to cally but if the snow is too much for the posties who would deliver it ;D I must admit cally it did look pretty and scenic, well still does but the flippin novelty has worn off now.
