I've got myself a horse. Finally, having wanted one since I was 7 years old, I've bought my 1st horse! The $ is changing hands Monday or Tuesday ($1500) and he's a perfect beginners/1st horse...well, maybe not actually perfect: if he's tied up and bored (ie. not being fed or smooched) he will crib and windsuck. He's ok in his HUGE shared paddock and his teeth and condition aren't badly affected.
He's a chestnut gelding, 19 years old and 14.2hh called Star (not the most imaginitive name). He's been a riding school horse in the past and has a beautiful temperament. The grown up daughter of the agistment farms' owners is a friend from the RDA and she is stoked I'm buying him (she lives and works there too and put me onto him). Another RDA friend has her horse in the same paddock and she's really happy about it too, as are the other horse owners, who seem to know all about me even though I've only met 3 of them!
The farm is surrounded by mountains, with creeks and granite outcrops and lots of lovely hills for building topline. It's a horsey heaven. So from now on no more buying books on ebay etc- only op shop bargains I'm afraid (except in the case of Rivals to Silver Eagle- must get my hands on that).
I WILL learn how to put pics on asap.
It's odd but it hasn't actually sunk in yet; I guess when I saddle him up for a ride all by myself tomorrow it may!

Hi Cally He sounds lovely and the farm idylic! I was never allowed a pony when I was young, so I had to wait until I left home and started working so I could afford to buy one. It's a fabulous feeling to know your actually going to have a horse at last.

I'm so pleased for you Cally, and also pleased that a horse like him has got a home and someone to love him. Do see if you can put up a piccy of him, he's going to be a pmbl associate member after all! However, since I have actually now got a digital camera, but haven't the faintest idea how to take photos off it and put them on the computer - (putting it next to the computer and glaring at it hasn't worked so far) - I know it is easier said than done!

Thank you everybody for all of your support, especially when I felt it was NEVER going to happen. We went for a picnic ride today, Me, Star Phil (OH) and the kids and he was perfect. The kids rode him on a lead and even when a mob of kangaroos jumped away from us nearby he just looked interested- he's alert but calm, and I truly believe he enjoyed being with us today (esp. the carrot part, & when he managed to get into the lunch box and steal a jammy bread crust! I WILL work on putting up pics as soon as I catch my breath!

I will continue to pester Phil for help in the photo department- I took some this morning when he was eating and they made him look AWFUL! I'll try again after a ride tomorrow with his new saddle pad. The one the owner was using was so worn the horse side was raw HESSIAN! I'm going to spoil him within reason- I'm not one for 'blingy' unecessary rubbish and he doesn't need fancy feeding either at present so it's as natural a life as possible for Star. He's got the best feet! (still, it hasn't rained here for a few weeks).

Sorry no pics yet- had my 1st ride with no other grown ups around to help if anything went awry, but all was well; keener on the way home than out but no nappiness or misbehaviour whatsoever. Even had a bit of a canter!

Still hassling OH to show me...or just do it for me....the sending pics thing. He is THE most UNphotogenic animal though. Particularly at the moment as he has a hairy face.
His former owner before the last one (before the girl who sold him to me) has contacted the agistment owner and asked about Star- if he's there etc- because she'd like first offer to buy him back if he was for sale again. It's nice to know she cares so much about him but it's slightly unnerving too.
I'll contact her and invite her to visit but there's no way I'm selling him; the kids would kill me if I even considered it!
