I've just read We met our cousins and London Pride by Joanna Cannan - not wildly horsey but still very enjoyable reads.

Claire, you should dig in.....it's an enjoyable comfort read.
I'm in the middle of Silk Purse by Glenda Spooner, which isn't grabbing me as I thought it would.....I've never been able to get into books written in the present tense, and the whole dream sequence just puts the cherry on top.......sigh.......

Wow ,Just looked on Amazon and there are lots of titles of K M Peytons that I hadn't heard of.. Claire is there a sequel to Small Gains as there is one called Greater Gains too? The pennington ones look quite expensive on there too..I haven't read those yet. Is Plain Jack a child read.? I've just read Taff and the Stolen ponies..A pleasant read. Nice cover too.

Susan I have been trying to get a cheap copy of the Silk Purse for a while unsuccessfully. After hearing your thoughts on the book may not be so bothered now. Not a fan of the present tense narrative either and as I think we have similar tastes in books I might not enjoy it.
Exmoorfan, yes Greater Gains is the sequel to Small Gains, quite good but not as good as the first IMHO.

Just read Satin and Silk by April Jaffe (another teenage author - 14). It was an average read - a bit too packed with adventures/disasters (gypsies, charging bulls, stuck in the mud, cut off by the tide...etc)

I've had that one sitting in my TBR pile for ages. After your comments I might read it next while I'm waiting for all my Flambard books to arrive!
I've also got London Pride and we met our cousins to read too....

I'm so jealous of you lot- any Joanna Cannan or Primrose Cummings book, ASSUMING you can find any in Oz or NZ, cost an absolute fortune. I think some pony books only made it to Australia by being brought here by UK immigrants as prized possessions.

Thats a shame cally as they're good stuff.
Talking of Joanna Cannan am re-reading the Jean series as now got the 3rd one and want to read them all together.
Just finished reading Black Fury by Peggie Cannam which I got for Christmas. I enjoyed it altho it couldn't be called a comfort read and wasn't exactly a laugh a minute. A bit sad in places but it had a nice ending. I quite like all Peggie Cannam's books, Triple Bar is the best one I have read so far of hers.

Hi everyone.. Rosie I liked the book but having just read the K.M Peytons it isn't in the same league. . Depends what you want from a book I guess. I read most of mine in bed when I can't sleep so it has to be a can't put down..lol It is a comfort read.. Sarah I agree satin & Silk was a bit average Cally can we help you.? Can we send the books you cannot get.? exmoorfan

I got a couple of Pippa Funnell books for Christmas, I did start them and then put them down, not a good sign as usually I'll read the whole book straight off if it is a new pony book! Do I gather that We met our cousins and London Pride are not really pony books? Claire what on earth is Black Fury about, Dark Fury I know as the JC one about a wild stallion, but Peggy Cannan can't have written about a wild stally?

I've nearly finished Easter the showjumper and I have to say it has disappointed me a teeny bit. It's O.K. but it isn't in the "I can't put it down" league for me. Ah well, on to Taff and the Stolen ponies next, I like a comfort read Exmoorfan

Been re-reading the Jean books. I cant say I enjoyed them as much as I remembered. They seem a little dull and unoriginal (she wins all the prizes at the gymkhanas, gets a pony given to her by a grateful rich bloke, etc, etc) - altho well written and very readable. I much prefer her others however. Anyway will try the 3rd one and see if that one's better. May do a review of one of them or even them all.

I read the third one (without the others) a while ago and enjoyed it - it's where they run a riding school and I always like books about that.

Just done a full length review of 1st one in series. Will report on 3rd soon.

I'm re reading a favourite- Joanna Cannan's 'They Bought her a Pony' 'cos I need cheering up and it's a laugh. I can't afford to buy any new books at the moment; I think I've almost exhausted the pool of PB titles ever released down here and postage makes buying from the UK prohibitive now. When I finally make it over there I'll go on a shopping spree and buy a a suitcase from a 2nd hand shop and fill it up!

Cally are there not any UK pb titles you havent read yet, as the postage for them to Australia is only around £2. I could easily look for them for you, pick them up cheap and post them off to you.
Half way thru the 3rd Jean book and am glad to say I am really enjoying this one. Its one of my fav storylines, girsl running their own stables and it has the humour of the other books too. In my opinion the 2nd one in the series is by far the worst, its all hunting and gymkhanas and a bit boring, tho still has its funny moments.

Thanks Claire- I will sit down and make a definitive list (at some point) of the ones I'm most desperate for. 'Rivals to Silver Eagle' springs to mind immediately. I'll post a list on the book wants thread and also check if anyone's after any Australian books- I'm not really 'into' them but I see some Silver Brumby titles around that might be wanted in the UK.

Now that's a book I'd really like too but I have a feeling it's a tad expensive and rarer than the others in the silver eagles series?

Yep that is a very hard one to find and won't be cheap! But I often find decent paperback titles for less than £1. I quite like Aussie books cally so we may be able to do a swap. There are some Silver B titles I need cos some of them disappeared a while back.
