The Patterson book was good. Just finished it in the bath ;D It was called rather unfortunately 'The Quickie.' Well it certainly didnt take me long to read it. I love Daphne D M too & yes love Cornwall as well.,My fav of hers is possibly My Cousin Rachel but I like the film version of Rebecca best (the old one with Joan Fontaine of course) mysteryarab I too am curious to know why the Twilight books are so popular. Hey just thought of something. I should write a vampire pony book I'm sure it would be a best seller!

I'm going to avoid commenting on our esteemed moderator's first paragraph, insert your own gags there please!! Yep, get writing, flying horses needing bottles of blood to fly, horses coming back from the dead, horses crossed with snakes, eight legged horses, and of course, good and bad unicorns, - see, I am full of ideas, even if they seem to remind me of something............................... ;D

Twilight is... amazing! Basicaly a girl moves cities, meets guy, the guy happens to be a vampire (but one who only lives of animal blood) but for some reason has a insance craving for her blood. She is curious about him, not knowing hes a vampire, which makes it harder for him to avoid her. She gets in lots of trouble and he always saves her and they fall in love somehow... although its hard for them to kiss, incase he gets carried away and eats her.
I make it sound so pathetic! But honestly, I have read all 4 now and the 4th (Breaking Dawn) is the best by far. It sounds crazy, but there are supernatural elements and folklore that I realy enjoyed. The romance element IS strong, but its not all smooshy and sickly sweet as they are both realy strong charecters and it realy is facinating. I reccomend!

Thanks mysteryarab I may try one which is the first one in the series? I used to like the Anne Rice vampire ones in my more youthful days, but it may have been because they had a lot of historical background and I am a bit of a history buff.
At the mo I am reading The Bell Family by Noel Streatfield and an adult mystery book about someone who goes to write the biog of a mysterious author (cant remember title or author sorry). Quite interesting cos its a lot about books. Strangely since this thread started I haven't read many pony books!

I'm still sniffing a bit as I've just finished my friend flicka. What a beautiful story, I had thunderhead as a kid but could never get into it so did't read it neadless to say I am now desperate to get my hands on it. Were these stories wrote for children or adults?

I have nearly finished Rivals to Silver Eagle and I have enjoyed it. In an earlier post Sarah was reading Ride Across the Ocean by Zita White. As a child that book and The One Day Ponies by the same author were my favourites. I borrowed them every other week from the local library and only in the last 2 years have I had copies of my own.

It is a real coincidence that you should mentionThe One Day Ponies beswickcollector - that was my 50p bargain this month - I nearly missed the book completely as it was just an ordinary looking little hardback, but the word pony in the title caught my eye - then her dedication was to " Robin, who broke my foot and gave me time to write this!" Now she might have a clumsy husband, or a big dog, but I decided it was her pony! ;D So I had to buy it!

I wasnt that fussed by the One Day Ponies myself. Not sure what it was but it just didnt grab me at all. That was a good bargain tho kunuma as its quite hard to find over here.

Funnily enough I am also just reading Rivals to Silver eagles too and must say I am enjoying it more than the other two which I read last week, Riding school for the first time. The time span between them is quite telling i thought and the style of Rivals slightly different to the others and although not in the same league as the (I think at least this is the illustrator) Cecil Trew illustrations the illustrations do have a beautiful simplistic charm about them.
Zoe I couldn't get into any of the O'Hara books a kid...never got past first few pages...will have to give them a try again.

They definitely do have an adult theme (not in the way that is used nowadays!) - I think they are for teenagers, certainly they were marketed as such in the paperback versions. There is a lot about the relationship between the two sons and their father, and between the two parents. There is all the rather deep stuff about Nell's post natal depression, and her religious views. BUT there is a lot of horse stuff there too, although some of it horribly violent and reminiscent of the sort of Western horse 'handling' that Monty Roberts has fought so hard against. Plus, how could I forget, the teenage love interest with Ken and Drippy - or Cally or whatever she is called!

Ah, Flicka. I read them when I was very small, but remember skipping loads of boring stuff. IE I wanted to read about Flicka and Thunderhead. Re-reading, I think they're teenage - especially Greengrass.
And some of it was very disturbing - thinking of the bit about Rocket's death - as well as the white colt in Greengrass.
Drippy - you're spot on there!!

Yes - those were the two things that stick in my mind - esp the white colt which was deliberate. I actually find that a problem with some of the Australian and American ones, (like the other Brumby series) but I suppose that is because I am still living in my parallel universe where stuff like that is not allowed to happen! Though I did feel the whole fight between Ken and his father over keeping Thunderhead entire was well done and quite realistic, especially the ending! I do love a happy ending!

Oh Wow, thankyou so much Konstanze for reminding me about MOKY I totally adored her in Summer Pony. I thought she only had one adventure. You are inspiring me to go through my old boxes and find that book. I will have to try and find The Crumb, sounds fascinating.
Im going through the Jinny series - Only takes me about two hours to read one now! Used to take me days! Im on Ride Like the Wind, next I'll go, Jump For The Moon (my favourite) and maybe Running wild.
Im also reading The Portable Poe - all Edgar Allen Poe's best poems, stories and fables, and Im into the Bernard Cornwall Arthur series. One book to go!

I always go for Jill when I need cheering up- it's my favourite series.
I finally bought a new printer and printed out 6 ponies (with thanks to Claire) so I'm looking forward to reading this book I have wanted for YEARS! Can't wait for bedtime; I'm tempted to start now 'cos it's incredibly windy outside and there's a bit of a dust storm but it's given me a headache. I loathe windy weather.

COR! I'm shocked at the amount of pony bashing in 6 Ponies!!! I do hope, as I haven't finished, that Uncle George comes down on them like a ton of bricks; I assume he does 'cos John Manners goes on to be quite nice in the other books.

There is rather a lot isn't there when you think about it.
I am just reading and throughly enjoying Pat leitch's A Pony of our own but have just finished Cross Country pony and personally thought what utter tripe! I will start a new thread later to do with this....

ooh I love Cross Country Pony!!! Funny how I always love the books you hate haffy and vice versa ;D
Cally did you read the Reading Circle thread on 6 Ponies as we discussed some of the darker aspects of the story there. I do think that apart from Christopher, most of the characters get better in the later books.

I will start a new thread later to do with this.... I loved 'A Pony of our Own' too, didn't the author have a real life Highland - do you think that is how she found hers? Bother, I can't remember the Cross Country pony one (not a good sign in itself) - will now have to go and find it so I can see who I agree with! ;D Forgot to say, Darkling is brilliant, one of the very few which involve a 'lurve story', that I actually like!!
