Hi all, Has anyone got a copy of this book by any chance? I have just got hold of one. It is a very rare and valuable book but I have a horrible feeling that the last page/s are missing so was wondering if someone has a copy and can tell me what the last bit says.

Yep a great name for a pony book writer! I am not sure if there is a bit missing or not, as the last sentence seems to end a bit abruptly altho it is definitely near the end of the story. Also the pastedowns have tape stuck on them front and back so its impossible to tell if a page has been removed. Trouble is the book is so rare its gonna be hard to find someone with a copy to check. No copies anywhere on the internet at all. May try Jane.

I havent actually read it yet but it I think it is a sort of fantasy with cats and seahorses in. Sounds a bit Ursula Moray Williams-ish. I think she wrote a small number of books on similar lines, no other pony related ones as far as I know. They seem to be warmly regarded by a number of people who read them in their childhod and are all rare. This copy may not have a page missing - I simply dont know!

Your book should have 127 numbered pages.

Afraid I've never heard of it but omg so annoying to have the last pages missing! That would drive me mad! A friend of mine got so annoyed by her husband that she did just that - she ripped the last few pages of the book out that he was reading. Took him several weeks, to find them missing he did. Me? I am afraid I just LOLed when she told me via text, and I LOLed again when she was telling someone else. I dont have the book in question, so I cant help you Claire.

I was checking on Ursula Horsley-Smith books for sale and the only book I found was one copy of The Door That Wasn't There . . . for $495 It's not uncommon to see people ask for ridiculous prices on books, but then I checked back later, and it was gone, so apparently it sold!

I actually sold this copy for about £60-70 I wasn't prepared to charge silly prices as it was very tatty and had a photocopy of last page. I did actually sell it twice as the first person I sold it to sold it back to me for half price and then I re-sold it!
I did get a scan of it before I sold it if anyone is interested in reading it.

I have the whole set of four books that Ursula Horsley Smith wrote, two of them still have the dust covers on them. Would any one know the best book valuer to approach to find out what they are worth?.... all are first editions.

Hi Kathleen, wow lucky you to have them all. They are rare but its hard to value them as they don't appear very often and because the author is not very well known they don't have as much of a market as some more popular authors. If you are interested in selling them I certainly would be interested in buying White Horses at least - drop me a line at ponymabooklovers@yahoo.co.uk

Hi Claire, Thanks for your reply. I am in australia so there are not so many book valuers over here so was looking for a reputable british one. I must confess I am not looking to sell any. And do understand that this author is basically a 'generational' collectable.
I have three copies of white horses that I have collected over the years. It is a book my father used to read to us when my sister and I were children and I also read his copy years ago to my daughters .(it has totally fallen apart now!) In my quest to find a copy for each of my daughters I managed to be so lucky as to collect the rest of them too....the door that wasn't there, sunset cottage and land of no time, the other books that Ursula wrote. The third copy of White Horses I am about to give my sister as a gift. Perhaps I shall just make some requests of well known bookshops, stella and rose's or abes.
Thanks very much for your interest
regards
Kathleen

Hi Kathleen I'm very interested in purchasing Sunset Cottage off you - I live in Australia too. Or at least get a scanned version as I have been looking for it for so long now (I live in Melb, where are you?). I've been trying to get it as a surprise pressie for my mum for years now and continue to hit road blocks. In fact, I had tried to purchase White Horses as a trade off to not having found Sunset Cottage for her about 2 years ago now from ponymadseller aka Claire for squirrelbooks.com. I remember I had won the auction on Ebay for approx 40 pounds but Claire was not prepared to sell it to me as she believed she could get a higher price for it, even though it was in such terrible condition. So it is quite interesting to hear her say that she didn't want to sell it for "silly prices". Anyway, I have now found a copy of White Horses in much better condition and am looking to either sell this book to raise the funds to buy Sunset Cottage (I have found one for $600!! - I can't believe how greedy people are!), or trade it with someone who has Sunset Cottage and would like White Horses. Let me know if you're interested or know anyone who would be interested in trading these books. Maddy

In fact this is bordering on libellous as you, Maddy, are questioning my integrity as a bookseller. Just to put the record straight this person did not 'win' the auction on ebay as it did not meet the reserve price. As I eventually sold the book for £60 it was hardly a silly price as opposed to $600. I have to make a living selling books, it is not greed. I could have deleted this post (and would have if this has been insulting anyone on the forum but myself) but I did not want people to think I was sweeping anything under the carpet. I never do anything underhand in my dealings with customers. Please don't post on here again Maddy if you are going to insult people and be unpleasant as that is not our way on here.

Well she posted as a guest trixiepony so technically cannot be booted off lol. Also as I said I didnt want to just quietly remove the post without putting my side of the story over. Kathleen - if you give me your email address (email it to me dont post here) I may be able to put you in touch with a children's book dealer who may be able to value them for you. They will be fairly valuable especially in good condition with djs.

Well said!
Totally agree. That's one of the nice things about it here, it's a pleasant forum to visit without any agro. Can't be doing with all that.

What a ridiculous characterization of events, Maddy. If an auction item does not meet a reserve price, it is common practice to withdraw it. You should indeed be careful of accusing someone who follows standard business practices of doing something inappropriate, and of falsely describing events (saying you won an auction you did not, apparently, win).

Amazing how people can twist the truth to draw attention to themselves Claire anybody who has dealt with you as a bookseller knows that you are fair and act with integrity. Maddy remember if you can't say anything nice please don't post on our forum!

Crikey what have you lot been up to while I've been off pretending real life is worth the effort!! I have to say, that anyone unfortunate enough to know me knows I have little time for the human race as a whole, I think it has totally outgrown it's usefulness and we are overdue for the next great Extinction, this does have the side effect of meaning that I only bother with people who I consider worth bothering with - Claire most definitely makes my list!! Not to sound too much like I'm sucking up to the mod, but she has sold stuff for me on her site - with no advantage to herself at all and trusting me to not let her down regarding description and delivery etc = I would have to say she is totally honest and trustworthy - and I do know her apart from just posting on here! (£50 for the character write up we agreed didn't we Claire??

Lol kunuma, £50 on the way (tho the Royal Mail will probably lose it haha).
Seriously tho thanks for everyone's support here xxx I am having a hard time with the ebay side of things at the moment due to all their changes and huge increase in fees and its not easy making money as a bookseller at the best of times. I try not to charge ridiculously high prices but I obviously can't sell things at the same price as someone clearing their attic who has no overheads to pay and doesn't have to feed themselves and their animals out of the profits lol. I am certainly not a money grubber and its quite upsetting when someone intimates I am.

Wow! I cannot believe the mess I have created. I am truly sorry for insulting you, Claire. I feel terrible now. I was not trying to be nasty but I'm sure you can appreciate how I saw events occurring - perhaps blinded slightly by negativity. I was just a little angry when I saw you had gone on to sell this book after I had gotten in touch with you personally prior to and post to the ebay listing. I further apologise for saying I won the listing - I was the highest bidder but did not meet the reserve price, yes. However, I did not twist the words to draw attention to myself, in my honest opinion if you are the highest bidder you have won the bid. Also, when I said greedy people, I was talking about the ones who wanted $600 for books people were trying to obtain for nostalgic reasons. Wanting 20pounds extra isn't greedy, just annoying for me I suppose, and I guess why I posted to this forum. Anyway, please accept my humble apology for upsetting you, and all the best with you business. It appears your customers hold you in very high esteem. (if you would like to remove my negative comments for the sake of your forum, I am happy for you to do so).

Hi everyone, very interesting to read all your comments regarding the Ursula Horsley Smith books. I read "The door that wasn't there" as a child and would dearly love ypto buy a copy of it if anyone has any idea where I could bid for it (or just buy it) Hope this is OK to do this? I'm not very sure about writing in these forums. I was more of a memo/letter kind of girl, but got to move with the times:-). Happy Friday everyone x

Hi Janet, yes its quite OK to ask about things like this. I would try bookfinder.com as this searches a fairly large database of book selling sites (amazon, alibris, abe, etc). If you can't find the book at the moment you can also save searches, wishlists, etc on some of the sites so that you'll get a notification when a copy of the book is found.

Hi, me again Claire. I've tried bookfinder.com, eBay, Amazon, and several others but no luck. However just reading back through these old posts of yours again, have I read this correctly - you sold a copy of "The Door that Wasn't There" but you scanned it first?? If so I would be delighted to have even a scanned copy from you! If you are able to send me one, I would obviously pay you for your trouble and kindness. If you want me email address just let me know. I'm all excited now... :-) xxx
