I will resist making any comment about the rain, sleet, ice and MUD MUD MUD - but does anyone have any magic ointments, supplements or potions that help abscess prone feet in this weather? Little Welshie is paying for years of neglected feet, so despite the best of care now, does have white line disease, flat soles etc - and this weather on top of the wet summer is bringing back the abcesses I thought I'd seen the last of. The farrier digs them out, but despite my best efforts, because she lives out, the holes are getting packed full of mud etc - been using cornucrescine, tea tree oil, iodine, just at the "wonder if there's anything else I can try?" stage.

I know just how you feel...Murph has suffered with absesses since he had lami and also has some degeneration of the white line too. He has two feet now which have had perment holes dug out for about a year as bits of grit keep tracking up the hollow the degeneration has caused to the whiteline....meaning digging it out requires a chunk of his toe to be removed. As the summer was so wet we just didn't dare leave it and let it grow out in fear of trapping infection in. However I do very little with them and they don't get any worse but my farrier re opens the holes everyime he comes (every 4 weeks) so they don't grow out either In dry weather he puts keratex hoof putty in the holes (which has a slow release disinfectanty stuff in it) and this is how we have blocked and grown out the holes previously but in this weather it just won't stay put and I'm lucky that mine are on very sandy soil so mud is at a minimum compared to most. Have you tried hoof supplements at all? Seaweed is great for barefoot feeed and of course farriers Formula etc are good but pricey. This is absolute wonder stuff for laminitics www.wrhorsesupplies.com/page4.htm

It would probaly be easier if they could just wear wellies! But seriously... I remember some stuff I had... I dont remember exactly what it was, but it could be put on the hoof to avoid cracking, but also UNDER the hoof and it formed a sort of insulating layer. It was pretty good, but obviously wears off after a while. Now I cant remember what it was called but it was something Bacon and had a picture of a pig on it. It was a big red tub and inside was like a block of this stuff, it was a white solid, like moisteriser, but harder and thicker! I used a hoof oil brush to put it on. Ill try having a serch incase we have the tub still. Mind you it was a few years back, but we like to reuse! Probaly has studs or something in now x

www.frogpool.com/product-6622.htmTada! Ok this isnt what I used, it says its a new version but oh well. However thinking about it, my pony has no issues with his hooves (except usual things mud and wet weather does to them), so I dont know whether it would be ok on your horses hooves if she has a absess... but its an idea! x
