Right, now for this you need to have read the books - evil grin- so having well organised libraries won't help I've scaled it down to very popular books so as not to be tooo sneaky! The answer to each is just the title of the book that the canine character is in - several appear in more than one book, so any of those books is a correct answer. You can have more than one from the same book - there - that's really easy isn't it? You have to find a 1 Dalmatian 2 West Highland White 3 Red Setter 4 Collie 5 Borzoi 6 Irish Wolfhound 7 Corgi 8 Black Labrador 9 German Shepherd 10 Scottish Terrier 11 Bull Terrier 12 Old English Sheepdog 13 Bloodhound 14 Cairn 15 Black Cocker Spaniel 16 Golden Cocker Spaniel 17 Sealyham 18 Newfoundland 19 Boxer 20 Poodle and for extra points 21 Dingo! They all have to be characters in a pony book!

Is it one guess at a time or do we do as many as we can at once? (my minds already gone blank in preparation!)

Anna was a German Shepherd in Black Fury by Peggie Cannam. We called them Alsatians then. The Esmonds have a small dog in Plenty of Ponies but I cannot see what breed it was, the eagle eyed among you might find it. Horseman's Island by Marjorie Oliver also has Wolfhounds in with a lovely illustration.

Beswickcollector is much warmer than she thinks!!!! Yes, they have to be in a pony book - Lassie not allowed!! Some are major characters and quite easy like Shannan the wolfhound - some are just mentioned as belonging to characters, but all are named by breed. You are all doing too well, should have made you name them all too!! Zoe has found my fave Scottie - though he's not the only one, but Borzoi lovers may have an issue with her description of their beloved breed! ;D

I've thought of another scottie - Napoleon in silver blaze and a boxer - sinbad in for want of a saddle
I'm now very confused about what a borzoi is. Anyone got a picture

There's a German Shepherd in King Sam by Vian Smith...he doesn't belong to any of the protagonists, but definitely figures in the climax of the action!

In 'I had Two Ponies' by JPT Christobel snatches a black Cocker Spaniel called Sweep for the reward money. She also finds Brock the Sealyham on one of her secret rides after creeping past Jasper the Bull Terrier to go out. In Riding With the Lyntons by DPT Lesley is greeted by Toots the Scottie and Jasper the Bloodhound on her first visit to the family. This takes me back to English Literature homework 40+ years ago, Luckily I have reread both books in the last 2 years

They also have Sefton, golden spaniel, the son of Sailor In Ride by Night by CPT the campers take with them,Miracle a retriever, Cockade, a West Highland White, Fearless a German Shepherd (Alsatian) and a Peke called Ching Poo but I cannot remember if you wanted a Peke. Eek - marking is harder than setting it was! (I expect teachers say that all the time!!) Beswickcollector is on a roll - even throwing in an extra Peke!! :
The person to mention each breed first gets the point - as there are some breeds that do appear in many books - I think it is interesting that the same breeds feature so often, as no doubt,( esp in the case of the PT's) the dogs are based on their own dogs.
Still to find -
Dalmatian Red Setter Corgi Old English Sheepdog Cairn Newfoundland
Clue - there are two pairings of breeds there who appear in the same book.

The dalmatian and cairns were the ones I was thinking of, well done Zoe.
OK Clue time -
One pair of breeds lived on a farm where a kidnapping took place! One breed of dog lived in an ancestral home which was let out as a holiday cottage! And another breed came with his owner to stay in a household where winning rosettes was high on the agenda!

Thanks for the clues. The newfoundland was one of the dogs owned by the family in Riders From Afar. Hmm kidnapping took place in the Cuckoo Mill Farm series and the Moors series but can't recall any specific dogs. Am I on the right track or completely wrong

haffyfan, yes Melly and Lindo brought Gussie and Mo, a Corgi and a Westie with them when they came to stay in Chatton! They show the dogs at the same show as Jill and Ann show their ponies! I always remember the bit where they say "the dogs have to stand still and not shake their heads about like ponies are apparently allowed to do!" Trying to work out who got the most - think I'll need a whole litter to give away!
