Hi all, a little Halloween treat for anyone who wants to join in! Not horse related, but if you haven't seen it before I'd really recommend it. This is a fantastic film full of humour, magic and romance. A classic from 1958 starring Kim Novak, Jimmy Stewart and Jack Lemmon (not to mention a gorgeous Siamese cat!) it stands the test of time and is a great watch for a Halloween night in with a cup of hot chocolate or a tipple! (And let's face it a lot of us will be stuck indoors due to some form of lockdown ) More on the film hereThe film is available to rent on Amazon prime, Google Play, Youtube etc for around Ā£2.49. I so wanted to join in, but I don't have a DVD and amazon in the us doesn't have it for prime video streaming at the moment. I did see it about 30 years ago -- would have enjoyed seeing it again. Let's do more Film Club selections!

Hi Rally, I think youtube does a pay to view or google play? Yes it would be a nice idea to start up the 'film club' again. Maybe a Christmas film? (Actucally I'd totally forgotten the film was set at Christmas time. so for anyone who missed it as a Halloween watch, it's also a great festive film too) I thoroughly enjoyed my re-watch. When I first watched it many years ago I thought it was very romantic, even now as a hardened cynic on life I still find it stirs a little romance in my soul. Love the Stewart and Novak pairing, one of my favourite films is Vertigo, with the same two playing the lead roles. The casting is perfect, with Lennon and Elsa Lanchester playing escellent supporting roles. And as for Pyewacket! I've always wanted a Siamese since I first saw the film. A very nice comfort-watch for Halloween, despite the bad news for the UK (going into a full lockdown again) putting a damper on things. Darkhorse - would be interested to hear what you thought of the film. Have you seen it before?

I also enjoyed the film. I don't think I've ever seen it before. I have seen Vertigo and I agree that James Stewart and Kim Novak were a good combination. One of the best characters was the old witch, whose name I can't remember, and one of the best scenes is when Jimmy Stewart has to drink the magic potion she brews him.

I love the scene with Mrs. DePasse (spelling?), played by Hermione Gingold. And her parrot, Sybil ("who's a fool, you're a fool"). Actually, it's a long-time favorite of mine...I love everything about it: The great cast: Stewart, Novak, Lemon, Gingold, Elsa Lancaster, Earnie Kovacs, everyone perfect for their role. And of course Pyewacket...between this movie and the Disney adaptation of Undercover Cat (That Darn Cat), I wanted one too! The backdrop of NYC, the Flatiorn building, skating in Central Park, the little nightclub in the alley. The mid-Century Greenwich Village style that wild 50's Christmas tree, but at the same time the hutch that would be displaying china in a suburban home, repurposed as a bookcase cum bar. I spent years digging around trying to find out what tea set they were using (it's Franciscian Encanto in Birchbark) Definitely a lovely, charming comfort watch, thanks for suggesting it Claire. It really was timed well....we're going into a tougher lockdown here in Massachusetts again starting Friday, so every bit of cheer helps. Definitely up for a Christmas watch if anyone is interested. I'm game to try anything! There is a fabulous (also NYC based) picture that might tickle your fancy, called Fitzwilly. Dick van Dyke (no fake English accent, so don't be afraid), Barbara Feldon (Get Smart), Dame Edith Evans, John McGiver, Sam Waterston....the cast is awesome, and again, it's just a charming romantic comedy: www.imdb.com/title/tt0061669/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_0

Thanks for the link to that film Susan, it certainly sounds a hoot!
Yeah the scene with Mrs Depasse forcing Shep to drink the potion is toe curling. I've always been squeamish about food related unpleasantness so I had to avert my eyes when he actually sipped it but the facial expressions before he does so are priceless. We need more films like that nowadays instead of the endless supply of two dimensional action movies with zero plot or charm. Methinks I will now have to re-visit Vertigo!
