Skipper the dog from the sea gets a NEUTRAL. The first half was quite good but towards the end the appeal dropped off as it just became a series of cliched adventures ie dog rescues boy from cliff etc.
Skipper and the headland four gets a SMILEY , lots of pony action and a more well rounded story. Only downside was a bit of negative gypsy action often seen in books of this vintage.
Against the odds is a big SMILEY this one kept my interest and I'm really hoping that Scratch is as good or even better.
By the way awful illustrations in the first Skipper book, great illustrations (Geoffrey Whittam) in the second, this added to the appeal. Actually looking back at the first book Grace Lodge mainly can't draw dogs, which is a worry seeing the book features two dogs!!!

Hi all, thanks for your comments and smilies. Sorry haven't been able to update the webpage as I have had no wifi for a few days so unable to upload the page onto the web. Should get it done in the next day or so.
Ginslinger - no not too late at all - I'll get your list popped onto the web page (sorry it will be at the bottom as its quicker than moving everything around to put you in alphabetical order, even though it offends my librarian sensibilities haha).

Big smiley for Sawdust in His Shoes....early days, but it may wind up being my star read. This one is three time Newbery award winning Eloise Jarvis McGraw's debut novel, which for years was prohibitively expensive. Now back in print in paperback and as an ebook, in UK as well as US, I highly recommend grabbing a copy while it's still available (it's being republished by an indie, Plough Publishing, and you never can tell when those will wind up folding ) Link to the book on Amazon UK here

Susan, I think I mentioned in the pre-challenge/planning thread I read that one recently, and agree it is very good. I love the way the mother figure opened the hero's eyes to a different color scheme for his chestnut! It seemed very realistic to me that the hero may have thought that the kind of horse he needed only came in one type -- but outside eyes gave him a whole different way of looking at his Morgan! (being a little vague to avoid spoilers)

Yes, I loved that too.....that she realized immediately that being different, standing out, can be an advantage if you treat it as one.....much as Joe himself in that farming community

I love your drawings Trixie. Yes by all means put some on here.
Stuck half way through The Horse is Never Wrong due to only having it on my kindle cloud reader and having no wifi. So I read Jane's Lonely Donkey by Stephen Mogridge writing as Jill Stevens. Quite a nice little story but spoiled by having annoying cliched thieving gypsies. Sympathetic heroine and the donkey is a real character in the story. I like it that Jane loves the donkey for himself and is not constantly moaning about only having a donkey instead of a pony as in a lot of pony books featuring donks. The mystery has a few twists and turns, not quite Agatha Christie standard but enough to keep a youngster guessing. All in all I'll give it a smilie.
Starting on To Find a Golden Pony now.
Forgot to add - Brumby totally agree with your views on the Skipper Books especially the illustrators. I've got all the Skipper books and I always think it's a shame the first one doesn't have Whittam illustrations too.

Please could I have smiley faces for:-
Triple Bar
which passed the test of making me want to read the next two books in the series, and
The Hounds of Heaven
which was extremely well written, but quite the dirtiest book I have ever read that was not purposefully written as a dirty book. Also, not entirely sure I entirely shared the author's world view

Finally got started! Can i have a sad face for My Lucky Day, it says the author wrote it originally as child and you can tell, it jumps about all over the place with nothing of any substance and the time line seems very inconsistent. The couple of Amazon reviews were good! Scratch by Sue Millard gets a Smiley This was an enjoyable sequel especially as it was written so long after Against the odds. Love Zilla the fell pony in the story. Will be interested to see what others think of it. I read it a few months ago now and also really enjoyed it.

The couple of Amazon reviews were good! If there are only a very few amazon reviews for a book they invariably seem to be very good and call me cynical but I often think they are quite possibly from the author's family and friends (I am not saying this is definitely the case here by the way). I do tend to take such reviews with a pinch of salt. If you look at the reviews for a best selling author's books they usually have less stars than an e-book written and self published by an unknown author!

SMILEY for JONTY. I love all the Pony Jumpers so much, can't wait for Kate Lattey to get back to the series -- but this one was a bit disjointed and came to an abrupt end, I thought. And a few threads left hanging that I'm not certain are addressed in the main series, though that may just be poor memory on my part. Having read these two companion books to the main series, I've got so many thoughts and reactions to the books, I'm going to have to start a discussion thread on the Pony Jumpers! But briefly here I'll mention that I hope that events and characters set up in book 10 and in Irish Luck continue to be main characters. Katy, take the working student position and stay in Ireland! AJ can graduate to Tori ... or maybe Katy and the Irish contingent just need to spin off into their own series. They can make guest appearances much like the Dare to Dream characters do in one or two of the Pony Jumpers! nzponywriter

Smiley for Brown Sunshine of Sawdust Valley quite an enjoyable read aimed at younger readers. Interesting the illustrations were by Bonnie Shields dubbed 'the official Tennessee Mule Artist' rather fitting I think.

Ah well it was among the unread on my kindle too but I usually enjoy Josephine Tey and as I have a lot of non-fiction on my list which I sometimes find hard going so I thought choosing a familiar author would give a bit of relaxation. Smiley for New girl at St Chad’s. Interesting because it reflects a very different world and a classic school story. The heroine is sent to boarding school after buying a horse without parental permission.

Ok I have read The Horse of My Heart which gets a smiley, the story I will remember most from it is the one where the horse trainer couldn't control her dogs, because she thought the horses were animals who needed to respect her - but the dogs were her "babies". Sadly an attitude seen far too often these days and resulting in totally out of control dogs wreaking havoc in public!!
