Hi all, our late Spring read will be the last before the Summer Raading Challenge kicks in once more! Triple Bar by Peggie/Peggy Cannam. This is a story told part from a pony point of view, part from a human viewpoint. If anyone can't get hold of a copy I can lend one out. Discussion starts in approx 2 weeks time. Hope you enjoy it.

Hi Fizz no problem I can post my copy to you in a few days when I've finished reading it. Can you send me your address in a PM. I know you have before but I've probably deleted it! Would you mind passing it on if anyone else wants to borrow it?

Just started the 7th chapter, and have to admit I'm finding it an awful slog. Hoping it gets better

Oh dear I'm sorry to hear some other people aren't keen on it, as I really like the book, despite the fact I'm not normally a fan of the riches to rags to riches pony book. The story is a little slow to start, it picks up more later.
I've managed to mislay the damn thing after reading half way through it!
Really love the Geoffrey Whittam illustrations.

I found the first half a bit slow but really nothing to dislike. As Claire said the story does pickup and halfway through I thoroughly enjoyed it. Cobber is a likeable pony and I think Lida is a very pleasant and caring girl, who is doing a great job with her pony until an accident that changes their lives. I think the pony point of view parts were handled very well and we certainly got a sense of how Cobber was feeling with his new life.
I have given it good', I think to get 'very good' it needed a more exciting first half.

I'm up to page 33 and think it's great - if you like this sort of thing this is the sort of thing you'll like. The writing is very vivid and takes you there (only once so far has it strayed into the realm of the excessively poetic) It is a beautifully presented book and the illustrations are in the extra class

Looks this might be a 'marmite' type of book

Reached page 90 and tempted to sniff - poor Cobber! poor Lida!
Oh dear they are all weepies I am reading at the moment - Poor Miss Herrick (of "Pretty Kitty Herrick - Horsebreaker") has had her father shoot himself and has now moved in with the odious mother of her fiancΓ©e and is about to find out she has no money

Finished the book, but so sad, I just wanted to make a big fuss of him. Marked as very good in the poll, made me want to try the author's other books

I'm glad you enjoyed the book Tintin. You do really feel for Cobber. For me, it's the best of her books. She has written two school cum pony stories which are pretty decent, but may not be to everyone's taste if not a fan of school stories. Black Fury is also good, I wavered over doing that one for the reading group but decided to leave it for a Christmas read for later. Here's a link to the Peggie Cannam website page for more information on her other books: peggiecannam.ponymadbooklovers.co.uk/

Could I add the book to my Reading Challenge list as I haven't had a chance to start it yet?

I very much enjoyed the book which I also read as part of the Summer Challenge (I will also post on that thread Claire). I agree with others it was quite slow paced at first but then everything seemed to happen at once. It is an emotional read. It was very Black Beauty like as he went from being a top class show jumper to an ill-treated cart horse. The ending was lovely.
There was one point that slightly disturbed me. Lida and her father were obviously meant to be caring and enlightened owners so it was a bit of a shock when Lida's father mused over 'rapping' Cobber to make him jump better.
