Well summer is a month away so here's the thread for the summer reading challenge suggestions. My suggestions are:-
That we should have the recommended book suggestions as I know what I want to recommend. I think that it worked well last year.
I don't know how well this will work but a book in another language is my suggestion. So if you can read German for example then you could choose a German book. If you are a monoglot then you could choose a book that has been translated eg Pony in the luggage. I suspect that this may be hard so I don't know how well it will work.
My suggestion of authors who have died since the year 2000 in a previous years still stands.
I think someone (think it's susanb) suggested that we have a non pony book by a pony book author this year. If so I could do a PT book.
So if anyone else has any suggestions please post them here.

Hurrah - I was just starting to think about the challenge and thought I was too early
"Storm Horse" is a good translated book by N Garlick from the Netherlands. "Florian the Lipizzaner" translated from German is a very well written engaging read, but a little odd and very sad

Agghhh can't believe it's nearly that time already!! I feel like Spring has barely arrived yet. Great suggestions Garej. I can read Spanish a bit but it would have to be at as pretty basic level (like a picture book lol) or it would take me forever! A translated book is a very good idea. Snow Ponies is good one for that category. And yes the recommended book selection works well so we will keep this.

It all sounds good to me too....I've got one of Krista Rupps books in translation. I have Florian too (have had for years), if I get really ambitions, though tintin's "very sad" review isn't motivating me much For an author who has died since 2000, I'm sure I've got a Pullein-Thompson or two that I haven't read yet, so set there too! We hit 90f here today, and will probably get close to it tomorrow as well, so I'm definitely in summer mode now

I must admit I struggled with the German I tried last year but I was rather distracted and nomadic at the time. Now I am in my new home and have all my stuff albeit some still in boxes it should be easier. But French is by far my stronger language but I have no idea of writers. Any suggestions?
I have noticed recently stuff on The Every Horse Rembered campaign to commemorate the horses who died and served in war. Maybe something about horses in wartime? Fact or fiction... obv there is War Horse, but Flambards or maybe.. I can’t remember the name but The Guernsey Potato Peel pie film coming out reminded me of a book I read as a child about some children who miss evacuation from a channel island during the war and end up teaching the German Kommendant’s daughter to ride.
Or something involving a horsey holiday? I can think of several PTs and there is a Jill one and a Blackbirds one with pony treks.
I like the idea of the non horse book by a pony book writer. I have read all JPTs detective ones but there is a place with 2 faces? Or KMPeyton.. and no doubt others

I like the sounds of a horsey holiday one.
My own suggestion of a translated book was because I have K M Peyton's a pattern of roses and some of the Sandy Lane books in Welsh so I thought that it would give me the impotence to start it. Though reading was always my weakest in Welsh in school for gcse it was the only thing that I didn't do the hardest tier second language.
Some of the Katy books by Victoria eveleigh have been translated into french as you can buy them as ebooks via amazon. I don't know if you have read the English versions but they may be an option.

Ginslinger, the book you're thinking of is We Couldn't Leave Dinah, by Mary Treadgold. So weird, we must be on the same wavelength, because I was just thinking of suggesting it for a spring read, as it's easy to find and inexpensive!
In the US, aside from Michael Morpurgo's War Horse, there is also War Horse by Fairfax Downey. Sgt Reckless by Robin Hutton and Gen James Amos is a modern book about a horse in the Korean war The Perfect Horse by Elizabeth Letts, another modern find, is about the rescue of the Lippizan horses during WWII (this is the author who wrote the well-received book about Snowman, the showjumper)
Like the idea of a holiday/trekking book too....I can recommend Jane McIlwaine's Pony Trekking Summer to add to the list, I really enjoyed it. For myself, maybe this will be the impetus to push me to pick up Marjorie Procter's The Pony Trackers, which has been lurking in the tbr pile for...oh, years now

The best war horse fiction book I have read is "Top Kick - US Army Horse" by Helen Orr-Watson, Second World War though. It's also the best book, fiction or non-fiction I've read on how the US Army acquired and trained its horses. He husband was an officer so it's near to first hand and a little known historical source in its own right on military service during the transition from horse to motors. AND it still works as a pony book of the "horse biography" genre. She did other books on all the army animals - mule, dog and pidgeon - but mule and dog are very dear

Thanks garej and Susan, I haven’t read any Victoria Everleigh so that is definitely an option and I am really glad that it wasn’t another of my mangled imaginary books. Now I have looked it up, I see it was actually written early in the war which I am sure I didn’t realise when I read it as a child, though it makes sense from what I remember.

Hi folks LOVE all the suggestions! Sorry I am a bit slow to the discussion but have been mega busy the last few days. I still haven't got the late Spring read sorted so I better get that together before I start on the Summer reading challenge. Can I say that I am very pleased that everyone is still so enthusiastic about the challenge even though we've been doing it for quite a number of years now.

Ginslinger am I right in thinking that you didn't have your rosette last year? I know somebody didn't have theirs because they were moving but I can't remember who it was. If it was you I can send it along after this year's challenge has finished if you give me your address.
Like last year I have ordered rosettes. It's a different design to last year but they are all the same colour so it's something to look forward to. I have only ordered 10 though which was plenty last year so if I get 11 addresses someone will have to have last year's rosette! That's including myself as I am not doing myself down.

Ooh yes please. It was me. I would love it. Would you like me to send a SAE. It was such a lovely idea but I was all over the place literally. I found a couple I won as a child when my stuff came out of store so I can pin them up together.

It's up to you if you want to send a sae. I paid for the postage last year and have no problems paying this year. I usually include a greetings card so you will have to factor that in. I am including a card again but I can't guarantee unlike last year it will all horsey related as I have plenty of blank cards! Here is the rosette. I have taken a closeup of the centre. I don't know how well the colour shows up it's pink with a white centre with gold writing so apologies for any males who take part this year!

Thanks for the rosettes garej.
Someone made a suggestion about a trekking or pony holidays one - saw a loooong string of trekkers going out across the moor today and was very jealous!I'd like to do a trekking type one.
(Claire I'm still on a borrowed computer so I can't log in properly until/if I get my old one fixed!! The forum seems to think I'm trying to hack my own account!!)

Wow thanks Garej, that's very kind of you. I loved last year's rosette. I have it pinned on my toy donkey lol. I may even take a photo of it.
Yes I think a holiday/pony trek book will be a good choice for summer. You Aussies will have to pretend it's summer, mind you your winter is probably warmer than our good old British summer haha.

I found my Welsh books and Silver Eagle Carries On earlier on today. Silver Eagle Carries on fits into both the war category and the authors who have died since the year 2000 so if we do both I will be sorted. Either way it's a definite choice for my books as I read Silver Eagle Riding School last year and enjoyed it. Also I have enjoyed all the books I have read by Primrose Cumming so anything by her is usually good.

It certainly was when I was out there in 2002. My Australian cousins warned me I would have rain in NZ but apart from one weekend in rural Victoria And a cold day in Rotarian I had beautiful weather for the rest of my 7 week antipodean trip and remember watching the rain poor down at the Commonwealth games back in Manchester.

If we are doing pony holidays/treks then I could do We Rode to the sea by CPT. It's one of the few horsey PT ones that I haven't read so it will be great to read it. Otherwise it could go under the category of authors who have died since the year 2000. That's assuming I can find it.
Would sponsored rides count as pony treks? I am thinking of Sundance Saves the day if I can't find We Rode to the sea but I am not sure if it counts.

I have found We Rode to the sea so that's one for the challenge. Is that the one with the submarines and escaped prisoners etc - if so I might even have a spare to lend of that as I do tend to have doubles of PT scrappy paperbacks!

Apparently I have read it but I don't remember it. I think so kunuma because the similar Ride by Night has the roumainans in it.

There's Ride by Night for horsey holidays and I think Ponies for hire comes under pony trek. There's also Jackie and the pony trekkers for pony treks and also another Jackie book who's name escapes me!

I only suggested it as it was a bit summery and might be interesting as a sub genre with characters either on unfamiliar horses or in unfamiliar situations.

I have found The Mystery Trek. Can anyone tell me if The Mystery Trek is supposed to have a dj? Mine is ex library so I am not sure if it's supposed to have laminated boards or whether the library has laminated the boards themselves.

Here's a pic of it: Have you read it before? I'd recommend it to anyone who hasn't.
